Things to look for:
Structure - Rocks/Wrecks/Wood
Bait - Bait schools swimming, schooling in areas, etc.
Rips - Moving water, water moving over or around structure
Current - moving water
Channels - deep "highways" where water is moving carrying bait and game fish
Places to drift baits
Sand Bars - depth changes, water current change, bait highways
Drop Offs - depth changes, water current change, bait highways, ambush points
Holes - Pools - Eddies - places where fish stage and feed with moving currents on the edges

Do you divide your spots between sandy open water and rocky structured bay areas? Say that you want to fish a needlefish, would you fish them in either area anyway ?

So many fishing myths dispelled by the footage shown here: rips, structure, deep water, current, eddies, tides, bait...and nada. I don’t know where these locations are, but I can tell you from long experience that you will hardly ever catch fish in places like that. Just because YOU think it’s a great spot doesn’t mean fish will necessarily be there. Also, the stage of the tide and the presence of bait makes zero difference if no fish are there. In a word, fishing is all about luck. The only place that these fish hold these days is well offshore. The bridges that you showed and those boulders nearby DO NOT attract stripers because it’s too close to shore and striped bass are attracted NOT to bait but RATHER to deep, dark, cool water with little structure or no structural impediments, or at least very simple structure that doesn’t spook them. Guys fishing on a jetty catch fish and think it’s because of the structure- WRONG! It’s because a school of fish happened to be passing by. They’re not there every day or every week. Best bet is to fish from a boat, but if you want to fish from the shore, bridges and shallow areas like docks, beaches and jetties are poor areas because the fish are simply too frightened of lights (at night) and shallow waters and stay well away except when they happen to be traveling past such locations during the spring run, when they have to come in to spawn. For the fall run, they don’t even come back to the shore, they just head straight south from the ocean. The striped bass tag study revealed that the tagged fish NEVER came inshore, they remained miles offshore until they reached the Delmarva peninsula. These fish were so frightened of shallow water that they essentially behaved like pelagic fish during the fall run.
