You could save yourself a lot of time by just disconnecting one of the cables on the battery, then connecting the ammeter between the battery post and the disconnected cable. This will measure the total current drain from the battery for ALL circuits. Then start pulling one fuse at a time, watching the meter for a drop in current. For circuits that should not be draining current, there should be no drop. If you find a larger drop then the circuit should be draining with the engine off, then you have found a circuit with a short. Using this method you can just pull fuses quickly, one by one, without have to probe each fuse receptacle. You should connect the meter this way, to begin with, just to see how much total current is being drained with the engine off. Also, if you pull a fuse, and you get a large current drop, but you still have a large current drain, then you will know you have more than one short.

I liked the video great way to find a short or drainage and Ill be trying your way. Another way one can check a short is to remove the negative battery cable , connect a test light between the cable and the battery , (only between the negative cable and negative battery post) If it lights there is something pulling power. Next pull each fuse , if the light goes out, there in that circuit is the short or power drainage. Keep up the good work my friend.

Screw the likes man. I love how you explain the basics. Not just for diagnosing one small problem but in a method that works so many ways and you explain it the whole way through. So viewers can develop an ACTUAL understanding of basic auto electronics. Well done bro! I don't comment often but right now I feel I have to. You're absolutely right about the maths. Great video. Before replacing the light, I recommend getting the wiring diagram and doing some more troubleshooting to find out exactly why the light stays on. If the light does not go off, then short is happening between the light assembly and the switch. The current is not getting to the switch so switch is unable to control the circuit as a result. Therefore there is constant power to the bulbs. Thanks for sharing.

I really liked your instructions and how you got right to the point (other than the unnecessary footage of the trip to get the battery recharged). I liked that you covered checking that the alternator is charging the battery first. The only thing I had a hard time with was hearing you over the background music. One problem; the irritating background noise is too loud for many of us old folk who have a hard time understanding your words because the ambient noise obliterates the consonants in many of your words; e.g. sound like train or pain or vain or shane etc. We cannot hear which because of the high volume of the music. To James Lewis, sounds like you need to replace your ac clutch. Go to O"Reilly or Auto Zone and ask them to pull a new one off the shelf, then have them check the resistance with an ohm meter. Then go home and unplug the wiring harness on the clutch on your ride and see if it is the same. If it is lower, say 1 ohm or less then it is bad. You might even want to buy the new clutch and take it with you. as long as you don't install it or mess it up in any way they will let you return it. If it checks good then check the wiring from the fuse panel to the clutch to see if the two wires are melted together or to ground anywhere.

The time it takes for the amp to blow up is from the time I replaced the amp withing 2sec or more it varies so i suspect there is a short circuit, what would you recommend the step i take to try to locate where the short circuit is or any advise how i should approach this issue?
@chadrice59058 жыл бұрын
Another way is to pull the negative cable from battery and hook your volt meter between the neg post and terminal. Pull all the fuses. Make sure your Volt meter is set on amp load like you did. I take a picture of fuse panel. Push in the fuses one at a time and watch the meter and wright down the ones thats drawing current. Pull it and carry on and continue until your done. You'll figure out which one is pulling over .3 I believe its what it pulls every time the computer runs through itself for security and computer faults every 15 minutes. Different makes and models are different. So this is how you START to find the big amp draws. It might be over .3 amps draw for security systems. Then the car can be actually started in two weeks before the computers draw the batteries down. Chrysler town and country mini vans 2010 and up HAS to be started every 13 days. Day 14 it will be dead. Next part is get someone or find the wire diagrams needed for that specific fuse link that covers all related connections to that specific circuit. I own a window tinting car audio shop. Owner/operator install tech with 31years in this field. Hope that helps at least 1person in the world. Then jobs done. Take care.

The current that these circuits were drawing was not enough to drain my battery in one day but since i was gone for while, it was able to. The radio is damaged and that also did drain more current than it need to use and my lamp fixture was also stuck on. After i repaired this my car lasted over a week without draining.

btw.im trying to replace fuse box in toyota camry 2004 , the under the hood one, and wonder if it's a good idea to do so and how to go about it. I see that i will have to cut and strip 100 or so cables to install a used box and wonder if it's possible to get it done without special tools and knowledge. I'm no mechanic but I'm determined to fix it,otherwise the car goes to junkyard. Toyota Dealer wanted thousands of dollars to repair it, they wanted to replace entire cable harness quoting repair for around 6k labor and parts. But i figured that the box itself is the problem. When I popped the hood and pushed the fuse box around or lifted it a bit I could start the car,but with time it got more and more difficult to get it run. So, I got used replacement fuse box ready to be installed. It won't start, and when I turn the ignition on and try to start it, the outside temperature and time gauge reading disappears for as long as I turn the key trying to start the car. The fuse box is the problem, but replacing it seems quite a challenge. Any advise would be appreciated!

Hey im having a problem finding my battery drain which is 5AMP I narrowed it down to #8 fuse which on my 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L WJ it says on fuse diagram that #8 is: Overhead console, rear wiper, IP lights, rear flipper glass solenoid Thats whats on that circuit apparently a bunch of things. I tried voltage testing the two wires that went to the upper center brake light because it wasn't turning on and found it had a bad bulb that burned out, but i connected both leads to the wires and i popped the fuse, replaced fuse. How should i test voltsge drop on connectors? Or how should i test them to find which components has the short on #8 fuse circuit that dropped amperage draw from 4.9-5V down to 0.36v when I pulled the #8 fuse while having negative terminal cable off the battery post with test leads of multimeter set to 10A and on negative terminal and negative battery post and 0.36v is normal for my vehicle according to manufacturer (they say 0.35v-0.50v is expected with all the modules?) The other thing i should mention is overhead front seat lights that you click on has a problem. The right one for passenger side wont click off if the interior lights dial is on any setting but off. And the left drivers side click on light will turn off? Any ideas on how i can find everything in the circuit and test each component? Also what the hell is iP lights?

If you pull off the negative terminal and do the 20 Amp test between the terminal and the battery post wouldn't it show the total Amp Drain while the car is off? Then you could subtract the .51 amps from whatever the total drawn amperage is and know that you found where the parasitic draw is coming from. I'm not a mechanic but have learned a few things dealing with used cars

+Mike Forsberg Yes! That is another method. It does the same thing but there are 2 reasons why I did not do that. 1. If there is a short circuit, then using the negative of the terminal risk combining all the currents from the electronics in the vehicle and could be well over a multi-meters Max current. This could cause the wires to smolder up. 2. If for some reason a person tries to crank the car and it is in series, the multi-meter well almost definitely get damaged.

Very true. Though to be fair, most things that individually draw high current will be obvious if they are operational (headlights on, an electric motor somewhere constantly running, your little brother sitting in the driver seat turning the ignition switch, ...). The real potential problem is as you stated: that configuration tests total drain, so all the little gremlins can add up to more than the multimeter can handle. It would probably take a very strange and unfortunate series of shorts for that to happen, but you are completely correct that it is possible. And by the way, this is a very good video. Something I haven't seen addressed on KZbin before.

Yes you can use the 10A setting. Unfortunately when trying to diagnose a short circuit, a large amount of current is being consumed. Meaning that it might still blow your fuse in the multimeter. Most multi meters have a 20 amp unfused port.

Expy failed going up hill on short out of town trip. replaced fuel filter that was clogged.. ran perfect for 3 days. It failed after errands in a parking lot.. went to get it.. i drove it home.. for 2 days cranked perfect.. continued to run gas out over the next few days so the fuel pump would be easier to change. It failed to start again for five days. Researched . I have Chilton's ECT. There is a limited amount of info in them. I am an ex electronic tech. Understand relays ECT. So watched videos ECT. Checked Schrader valve had gas there. I decided to turn the engine over.. it started (we are dealing with an intermittent here) I took it to a neighbor and he put a bid tool on it.. not a cheap one.. it initially said misfire on cylinder 4.. that made sense because when it quit, it did misfire going up hills I told him to clear the memory.. He found no codes..no cam sensor problems, no crankshaft sensor problems, always has had the sound of prime, never checked voltage at fuel pump relay or pump itself. I hesitate to pup 12 volts to fuel pump willy nilly, as it may feed back and destroy electronic infrastructure. I know this can be the inertia switch (they sometimes are intermittent). It could be an insulation leak to the chassis. I don't know if I am getting spark.. it seems like like the obd tester would catch that.. The problem is that it is intermittent. I notice this doesn't have the normal spark plug wire setup and I think this is cop setup. I am a little confused how to properly check for spark do I use a noid. Oh yes it is only showing about 30 psi on idle and 35 on acceleration maybe a little higher at high rpms. Also my fuse board under the hood and below the steering wheel does allow pull and replace of relays. If it comes down to it I can fix boards, but if it's a expensive chip.. that probably won't be happening.. I suspect we are dealing with an obvious component. If any body can give me a detailed description of how this all works please do so.

I think I have a short circuit in my power window wiring harness. Will this work the same way for that fuse? My windows worked fine, then stopped. If I slammed the driver's side door, they occasionally started working again. I removed my switch at the driver's side door & cleaned it to be sure it was getting good contact, but now I have no power to any of the windows. Kind of sucks as I have an 88 Mustang Convertible, lol. Any advice / info would be great!

Charlene Wainright That is usually a really good sign that the brushes on the motor or worn out. As far as all the windows not working... maybe the plug isn't in all the way... They sell brushes cheap on eBay, but you have to be able to take the motor apart and put it back together. That can be a daunting task for many.

My 02 f150 tail light fuse keeps burning out when it rains hard. I sealed the housings and made a little hole under each so if water still got in it could exit. No success yet. Any ideas

you say you needed to replace the lamp unit, maybe you fixed the radio short, etc....but what made you say there {from your calculations] is still more that is causing a faster drain than expected, where did that turn out to be and the 64 dollar question is.....why do you have these sudden simultaneous shorted circuits, did they accrue slowly over time and undetected, and why would that happen??

If the numbers don't go up when you start the car does that mean the alternator isn't charging the battery?

+Erque Richoms not as much on modern cars, on modern cars you should disconnect the battery of you plan to leave the car without starting for a couple of weeks.
