@Majd Fayad Not really because when I look through my view finder and get that angle that looks visually stunning. I get like an adrenaline rush and begin to get excited. If you think that is irrelevant then maybe this isn't the right job for you and this isn't what you actually want.

I really appreciate the fact that you actually teach how to make films, unlike most of the others who have all become platforms for film gears.

There is actually another interesting option for the focal point of the shot. You mentioned keeping it constant, or close to constant, and forcing the audience to move the point of focus. Another option is to shift the point of focus in the shot, move that point, and then start the next shot at the new point of focus. This can be very useful to help the audience keep track of movement and is often used in action sequences.

One thing you have to appreciate about Wolfcrow's channel is how dang technical he is. He won't babble on about autofocus and how a shallow depth of field is gonna make your film. I especially like how there are actual examples on screen along with showing us what these angles can help us achieve.

About the low angle viewpoint: it's not so simple. Example: if your camera is low pointing at a ceiling above the character, it can feels crushed by it, and he's not powerful at all. I would say that in each shot: take 2 things 1) the main subject and 2) the surroundings, then look what is doing what in relation to each other, all of that in the frame of the story.
@zohraishv
@zohraishv 6 жыл бұрын
If the camera is pointing at the ceiling then wouldn't that make the power of the ceiling over the character the main subject of that scene?
@MatthewHyatt
@MatthewHyatt 5 жыл бұрын
I think this is oversimplification for the fact of getting people to experiment TO FIND the proper angles.
@i-deni-i5138
@i-deni-i5138 5 жыл бұрын
Zohraish Virani not necessarily. There are shots of important characters from a far distance where 90% of the picture is just the background and still it can tell what the character is up to and so on. Not saying that a low angle shot where the camera pointing mostly at the ceiling is really necessary or informative tho. I personally don’t even like low angle shots, maybe only outdoors and if the story needs it. Also there are allot of DP’s who force the exacts formula of over the shoulder shots and it feel especially forced when you see the actor being totally concentrated for the DP to make the shot how he wants it, so the blocking doesn’t look that good in allot of movies. Really the best thing is to put yourself into the scene as a virtual character and try to view it like the audience would like to view it.. and I as audience hardly love viewing someone or something from a low angle. I love the natural aproach :)
@i-deni-i5138

PixelRelatedismyname in my opinion shots from above are more effective than low shots. Imagine having your character standing in the corner.. the camera above him and facing the same direction he is facing.. panning the camera from the situation he is going to face, down onto him in the corner is an awesome use of showing isolation.. maybe one shot at his eye level to see the characters reaction, but low angle shots unecessary in my opinion from a close distance. In Dunkirk however Hoyte Van Hoytema uses an awesome and frightening approach of a low angle long shot when the soldiers on the beach get shot by the bombers.

Right now, I consider you and ThisGuyEdits as KZbin's main source for proper education on camera and editing work. Always on point, always super informative. There are a lot of imposters out there, but true craftmanship always shines through, in your case with a low bullshit factor and the absence of overpriced "LUT"-packages. All in all, you are a big part of what KZbin could become in the future: a meeting place for people all across the world, that share a sense of wanting to create something with others. Seriously considering patronage of both of you; you truly have earned it :-)

Great tips! exceptions are how Cohen Brothers use shot/ reverse shot, and how Fincher only uses a closeup for emphasis climax after building tension in a scene; eg, start w a wide, escalating=med shots, then end on a close-up. Your point about characters only adding to the story is spot on; tension on every page of the script keeps audiences watching. This is more important now than ever before, as most viewers are streaming content and can easily pick up their phone if they are bored.

A nice and concise video. One thing I've noticed about the high angle viewpoint is that it not necessarily invokes weakness. In Topaz, Hitchcock is using a closeup on character's head when he seems to be lying. This I think rather makes the impression that we should be paying attention to the liar's thinking, not experiencing him as weak. Just an example.

As always: thanks for taking the time and break down aspects of cinematography! Love #5! Of course this needs planning and editing, but I think it is of utmost importance to guide the eye. As soon as I have the time I will try to check if, for example, Kubrick or Hitchcock used this technique in places. I´m almost sure they did. Thanks again for another great video!

Great video, but I have to disagree with the Hitchock quote, "The most important thing should be the biggest." Sometimes a small thing is the most important (a roach, a laser dot, a cloud of dust in the distance,) and you can still properly lead the audience's eye by giving it enough contrast. Be it with lightness, movement, color, anything to separate it; not just size.

I'm so happy i found this channel and i've been watching religiously for some weeks now. I am from Nigeria and i would love to do quality shorts that would tell "my African" sories. I Love what you do and would love to share my knowledge too to the younger generation and inspire people from my ends to do more than whats out there. I'm currently saving to buy some gear(tho my Wife disagrees) ..cos i was told on some youtube channel's comment that the budget doesn't matter. but the story and i should "Just Do It" I'm so scared but i'm also pumped i want to do something next year and though no one believes in me i do need to start and probably fail a couple times to make it happen. so thanks again.. to You. and all the other channels making everything seem attainable. P.s. I talk a lot sorry. P.P.s. can i be added to your mailing list too. Thanks a lot

Also.. when you do over the shoulder shots..Do you cut when the subject finishes his dialogue and switch to the other character then make the subject continue from where he stopped. when i see over the shoulder shots and the filmmaker used just one gear always blow my mind. i thought they use multiple cameras in movies. I Hope i learn so much and do great great sh*t and share in all for free like the Deakins guy i just found out on your channel. That man is this close to being my new hero. He's done too much powerful stuff. I rant i'm sorry...I don't have that much experience commenting on youtube. :D
