This is only if you re using cable (MC or Romex/NM), But if you use conduit and have more than 3 conductors then it's a whooole other debacle that includes derating which is much more complex. Also heating circuits are concidered continuous loads (running for more than 3 hours), then you must up your circuit by 125%...

At 5:20 746 watts per horsepower is at 100% efficiency. Motors or not 100% efficient. Look on the data plate and it is much closer to 1,000 watts per horsepower. So your 5HP motor will draw 22.7 amps.

I'm trying to run 2 ACs in 2 different bedrooms on a 15 amp breaker, but the circuit breaker keeps blowing. My question is... Can I change out the 15 amp breaker to a 20 amp breaker safely (even though I only have 14 gauge wiring), without burning my house down? I know wires can get very hot, and I sure don't want to burn my home down and void my insurance coverage. Thanks for any responses back as I'm sure they will help many others for years to come.

No. Your breaker tripping means it's doing its job. If you change to a 20 amp breaker, the wires will heat up, and therefore the resistance will also go up and the current will then go down. So the 20 amp breaker may never trip and an electrical fire is a possibility. 15 amp circuit=14 gauge wire minimum. 20 circuit= 12 gauge wire. Breaker value defines the circuit rating.

@tedsanders5380 Thanks Ted. I did do a lot of research and found that same answer out, especially with the heating up of the wires and causing fires. The crazy thing for me was, I use to run 3 ACs on that circuit and it would rarely blow. Now, I took 1 AC and home runed it on its own dedicated circuit. So all that less power draw and now it's tripping a lot. Crazy. I'm going to replace the circuit with a new 15 amp and go from there. If it still trips, I'm going remove another AC off the line and home run that 1 too. Thank you again for the response my friend. 😊

@@getreal3336 One other thing is that most breakers are not just over current devices, but are also heat sensitive, so a 20 breaker in your case may still trip, but I wouldn't rely on that, and it would also be a code violation.

@tedsanders5380 I'm not going to fool with it. My plan is to check the wire gauge. If it's 12 gauge, I'll install a new 20 amp breaker. If its 14 gauge, as I suspect, I will install a new 15 amp breaker. Thanks again Ted. I sincerely appreciate you. 😊

What’s the reason for the 2 pole 20 amp breaker for the motor, why not just a single pole? Also for the lighting circuit, he said to break it into 5 circuits, what amps are those breakers? I know he said you don’t want to go over 15 amps on a lighting circuit.

Sure can just have to make sure the wattage drw dosent exceed 2400 watts (per phase)or derate for constant usage I've done it for welders the bigger wire and beefer receptacle much better results

Not really….. Electrical work is an instructional job and it’s not rocket science. You can learn it by doing research and learning the codes. It requires knowledge but it doesn’t require you to be artistic. It’s not an artistic job like high-end carpentry,high-end tile work, or level 5 drywall….Artistic jobs require a lot of practice to do it, you can’t just do it with instructions. With electrical, you just need the instructions on how to do it right.

Nice initiativesir but the case of the motor may not work with the circuit breaker due to "transient". There's a surge at starting of motors and general induction loads. You should consider the extra amps of current during the mentioned regime.
