Is it a pre-requisite to factor first all of the polynomials (numerator & denominator) before graphing the rational function or that's just for getting the Vertical Asymptotes?

Can I ask why do you need to factor both the numerator and denominator (which is a linear numerator and quadratic denominator) in order to get the vertical asymptote? And why can't we just solve only the denominator? Why do we need to factor the numerator too? Sorry for my ignorance and thank you to someone who can answer my confusion. I've been stuck studying this for days.

I had trouble with that too. Its because lets say we solve for x, and we have 2 solutions as our vertical asymptote. If you were to graph it, it would show only one of the VA. For example, 3x-6/x^2-7x+10. The denominator factored is (x-5)(x-2) which is 5 and 2. I graphed it, and it only showed 5 as the vertical asymptote. Thats why we simplify it to get the correct VA. x-2 cancels with x-2 in the numerator. -----> 3(x-2)/(x-5)(x-2). x-2 cancels, and we are left with x-5.

Just to add a comment for this 2-year-old question…I think that’s because sometimes there exists at least one term that can be cancelled (same term appears both in denominator and numerator) and they’re not actually where vertical asymptote at.

yes! the last video I watched had an example of a rational function with a denominator of a difference of squares (DOS), x^2 - 4. He explained how there would be 2 asymptotes in this case, x=4 and x=(-4)

@@mathtutorph5718 in the context of vertical asymptotes, here's how it's done: (x-7)/((x^2)-x-6) To find the vertical asymptotes, we set the denominator to 0 right? So in this case if we factor the denominator, we'll get an answer of (x-3)(x+2)=0 So on a graph, you'll mark the lines x=3 and x=(-2).... giving you your two vertical asymptotes To graph it, just use like 5 points in each of the areas to get the idea of the shape of the graph... area 1 would be from (-infinity, -2).... area 2 would be (-2, 3) and area 3 would be (3, positive infinity) But if you take the concept of asymptotes into trigonometry.... then oh boy... tanX will give you pretty much infinite numbers of vertical asymptotes... try it on desmos.com (just type y=tanX)

@@mathtutorph5718 yes in the example above, the horizontal asymptote is indeed 0 since the degree of the numerator is smaller than the degree of the denominator. And yes you can graph it too. Now, I am notsire how the graph looks like of course but it could look like and exponential function in area 1 (between negative infinity and -2) where it never touches either of the asymptotes. In area 2, between -2 and 3, I may look like either a parabola opening up or down, or it may very well have shape of a cube function where it never touches the two vertical asymptotes. Now, i am not sure about everything that goes behind the scenes, but if the shape is of a cube function, then it is allowed to cross the horizontal asymptote whereas if it's a parabola it isn't. And in the area 3, from 3 to positive infinity, the shape could be something like another exponential function just reflected over the x axis. You could find the exact shape on desmos.com Lol sorry for the long and boring answer but do you get it or you can ask me if you have any other questions :)
