I really love you answering questions please continue this!!! Such a great question! And answer. Especially for young moms. I know they need the most support. Especially if they aren't naturally tidy. Throwing babies and littles in the mix makes it so apparent and overwhelming and exhausting when it already is that way. If I had a time machine I would be minimal before kids or get there when they are babies. It would have helped so much to not accumulate so much then.

Dawn, you are such an inspiration. Chemo is over for me. My hair is growing back! I just turned 70! I feel GREAT, energetic, and determined. After cleaning out my parent’s home when they both passed away several years ago, dealing with grief, emotions, and the overwhelming feeling of guilt for getting rid of a lot of their stuff, I don’t want my children and grandchildren do go through the same thing. I’ll never be a minimalist. And that’s ok. But I realize I have too much stuff most of which I don’t use, wear or need. You have inspired me to do the hard things before my family has to. **Cancer Free** Giving God the Glory!

Thank you Dawn 🙏 YOU HAVE HELPED ME MORE THAN YOU CAN EVER KNOW ❤️ - My husband is very ill and at the same time we are downsizing - My mental health has been severely tested. My mother was a hoarder and she taught all three of her daughters that we must hold on tight to all of our possessions. I have needed to reprogram my thinking and have been all alone with this - Then I found you. Thank you God 🙏

Hey dawn! Thank you for everything you do! I am a young mom with 2 very spirited “messy” children. The biggest thing I have learned in my minimal journey is, tidying is NOT cleaning. Once my home got to the point of not needing to tidy before cleaning (sweep, vacuum, etc) that is when I started to really feel the difference in my home!!!🎉🎉

I resignate with the laundry topic so much. I had so much clothes, literally my whole bedroom floor was covered with clothes for years. As I washed clothes I got rid of clothes that didn't fit right. If it wasn't something I regularly reached for I got rid of it and now I literally have a handful of clothes I wear in my closet. And I love it

I've been decluttering for a couple years now. I've been spring cleaning and decluttering the last few weeks. I realized I was finding fewer items that needed to go. (Yay!) I came across these pots yesterday as this was a priority cabinet I wanted to improve. I use the pots a lot but never use the lids. I remember you actually mentioned this before. I literally heard you in my head saying, "Permission to let it go." And at that moment, there was no mental back and forth or anything. I pulled those lids out and put them in the donation pile. As I kept looking through the house, I realized I think I've finally gotten it where it needs to be. Your videos have helped me so much. I'm actually proud of my house and know that someone could stop by at any moment and I wouldn't freak out about it being a mess. Thank you, Dawn! ❤

As a young woman: I was a back-to -the -earth homesteader raising all my own food , home baker, and seamstress. I then moved into a hopeful gourmet cook, and pastry chief, then children changed everything. I still gardened and baked, but what the family would eat. I went back to grad school, I minimized my home and meal prep but was exhausted all the time as I was teaching as well. Now widowed, two of my adult children have had to move back into my now downsized little home. They plan to $ave. We must live minimally for all of us to live successfully in this little space. I am a senior senior and continuously minimize.

5 Minutes in and I've already said to myself "I know I have baking dishes that I NEVER use. I wonder how much it is to replace a glass pie pan........... $3.18 at Walmart. I have not baked a pie since I was a teenager, but because it came in the set, I've kept it. Seriously though, I can replace in under 20 minutes for under $20. It needs to go. So my advice is to look at how much it actually costs to replace, because you might be surprised!

We are moving. Instead of renting a moving truck, I rented a huge dumpster! We are only moving about 90% of our stuff! Ever since watching just one of The Minimal Mom's videos a few days ago, and laying down my unbareable overwhelming burden, I have been walking on air!! I had wished on several occasions that our house would just burn down when no one was home so I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. I wouldn't have to decide what to keep and what to get rid of without guilt. I have literally become a monster!! My personality has changed especially over the past year. But I am free now! That burden is gone even though the junk is still here at the moment. I am committed to doing away with it. I despise what I have become. I just wish I had found this channel sooner... PS..I have watched many other decluttering channels, but none have got in my head like this one! A light came on watching just a few minutes of one video. I will first acknowledge the Lord in bringing me here! It was his mercy and grace that put the video in my list of recommendations. And It was the Lord that helped you learn to become "The Minimal Mom" in the first place and gave you the ability and desire to help others and it was the Lord that gave you the talent to speak and get your point across in a very simple, relatable and easy to understand way. The Lord is using you to help change lives!

I have been on this journey 7 years and I find I don’t bring in quite so much stuff…getting only what I absolutely need. The area I have to work on is my sewing room…but I try to go thru and pass on items I am not using to free up space. This past winter I donated craft items I used for a kids program I no longer used to a Kids Camp to clean out some cupboards in my garage which is wonderful!

It does get easier! My father brought over new Tim Hortons’ mugs for the kids, and in the past I would have been excited to get new things !! , but my first thought was now “ugh, I just got rid of the excess mugs, I don’t want these, do I have to keep these?, guess I’m getting rid of two old mugs …” then I asked the kids which of the mugs they wanted to keep - old or new? They wanted the new ones and I very happily donated their old mugs. I now get a rush out of getting rid of things. Sure, there are hard items and hard moments, but overall it is getting easier and more satisfying.

I like your point about focusing in on one hobby. I've found it hard to let go of the stuff from previous hobbies that I no longer do. I need to liberate myself from the nagging that having the stuff in the house gives out. Even though it's out of sight it gets to me. So I'm going to donate it.

I wish I had discovered minimalism before having kids! My daughter is 23 and I had been trying to push my organizing style on her, thinking one way was the only way. That's what I was taught, so I thought it was "right" for everyone. I only wish I could get my sister on board with getting rid of stuff, as her husband is a hoarder.

Your craft projects are my kids’ baby books. I got halfway through putting together my oldest child’s book and then didn’t get anything really started for my youngest child. I kept them in a pile that I kept meaning to go back to until my youngest was about 4 and then I realized how silly it was and how much energy I spent thinking about them so I packed everything I had started in their memory bins and haven’t thought about them since.

I am the SAME way! I grew up scrapbooking with my mom and always thought I would do it, too. After doing my oldest child’s scrapbook and doing my 2nd child’s first year, I realized this is not what I wanted for my life. I’m using all the supplies (that I didn’t purge) to do art projects with my kids. It’s so much fun and I can pass the cards and such along to others. So we’re making memories and those memories don’t clutter the house 😂

I absolutely love listening to your videos not only for purposes of decluttering and making life more manageable, but also helping to focus on what’s important. I wanted to put out there though that I really dislike the intro on the newer videos with a narrator at the beginning. When this comes up I always double check to make sure I clicked on the right video and not an advertisement or someone selling something. Not sure when/why this changed, but it makes the videos seem sketchy to someone who may be new. Love what you do and your positive and uplifting messages and time spent helping others learn how to simplify their life.

I’m going through kitchen stuff and already emptied all my non used baking stuff and sent it to a time will tell spot in the basement and I doubt I’ll be using them any time soon. My blender is on a shelf but I don’t use it often either. I now have to go through another one but I now have a 14/1 ninja foodie that I pretty much use daily so many of these soup pots of spaghetti sauce pots won’t get used unless that machine breaks… so off to the basement they go on a time will tell shelf. I have these humongous strainers and bowls for large gatherings…. Gone to basement also if I use them I’ll bring them up. Threw out plastic spoons a month ago but need them for the Ninja now but I’ll get 1-2 better quality this time as the old ones were dollar store stuff. Mason jars all in bins also.

I have been going through doing a draw here and there and since doing my clothes I can honestly say it was a relief to get rid of clothing that didn’t fit or that I disliked but felt I had to wear it as it fitted! I now have 5 work tops & 2 work 😅trousers, 4 sleeveless home tops & 3 3/4 sleeve ones plus 2 pairs of jeans & 2 legging types and 3 over shirt tops that I wear in the summer as I hate my upper arms on show. I did keep 1 cardigan as it can get chilly, especially in evenings. I have a tote with my warmer clothes in, I did purge, but will probably go through again before swapping out the summer clothes for the cooler weather. I donated 2 bin liners of clothes. I can honestly say, it’s so much easier in the morning, I didn’t think I actually had that many clothes & I don’t think I did, compared to some, but sorting through I’ll- fitting clothes is demoralising and depressing….none of that now 😊 😂 I can remember playing outside most of time in the summer too. My kids were fortunate to be in the position to have outdoor play as well but once we moved in the town it was more difficult.

I've done a time will tell with different skin care and most of them are junk. Now, granted everyone is different, but I'm finding a simple skin care routine is equally effective. I bought a traditionally expensive cleanser at a reduced price, the perfume in it tore my sensitive skin up. So, today I'm throwing out stuff that irritates or doesn't benefit my skin.

I also purged much of my skincare items due to Dawn’s, Cass’ & Dana’s encouragement. My sensitive older skin could not tolerate or even prefer those expensive ($$) products. When I saw my dermatologist for a routine skin scan appointment, she reinforced that expensive involved over the counter facial products are over rated & not for sensitive skin, and that basic regimes with mild cleanser and moisturizer are in deed effective.

I figured a work-around to be able to soak clothes in my Maytag HE washing machine. (I don't have a bathtub or large utility sink.) I'm not sure if this is bad for the machine, but it does work. I put the laundry I want to soak in the machine. Set it on soak, set the water temperature. Let it fill (add soap, diluted bleach, etc.) and agitate until it stops. Then unplug the machine. My machine will not drain itself at this point and I can leave it set for a few hours or overnight. When I'm ready to wash the load, I just plug it in and don't change any settings. It finishes the soaking cycle on its on (takes about 2 1/2 more hours) and drains. Then I wash as usual. Voila!

Thank you Dawn! You are truly an inspiration! I’ve been following you for a few months, but just started going through a full house decluttering officially this March. And so far, I’m loving it. It feels awesome, I’m more productive and energized. Thank you for inspiring so many of us!

Just went through one drawer of winter stuff and I realized one top taking up so much room I never wear because it takes a no strap bra, so it’s gone to donate box. A blouse I wore this week was so uncomfortable I threw it out.

I work 10 hours a nite. Laundry once a day is not an option. Once a week is not so bad though, and I do have a habit of leaving my sweater out because when I am awake it is cold. Would love to find something 1st shift but am at this point in life now.

Any suggestions for a woman age 64. And I don’t know how to get started on decluttering . I can’t move around like I used to. I am getting ready next month to have another knee surgery. I’m having my other knee replaced because they were recalled. It’s just disgusting but my husband works a lot and I love him but he’s so messy and I thought if I could get some things done before surgery, I could help myself out a lot.. If you can answer this before February 15 before my surgery that would be great. If not, I really appreciate it and I sure enjoy watching you.❤

I am moving. The color of my new red towels dont fit at all in my new bathroom. I bought new nice towels and now I am feeling guilty to throw away the red towels. It is not the money, it is the guilt of being wasteful.

So 33 items for each season??? Trying to figure out how that would work for me. I live in Florida and wear 75% of my clothing 75% of the year. The other 25% only gets worn 3 months ( maybe) of the year.
@LittleWayChoir
@LittleWayChoir Жыл бұрын
Maybe you could break it down to two seasons instead? Or keep a four season rotation but switch out some favorite clothes so you don't get tired of them. One thing I do is to pick a different color scheme for similar seasons. Even in NJ, our fall and spring have similar weather. But I reserve my plums and mustard yellows for fall and pack them away even though I could be wearing them in the spring. I bring out all things pink in spring instead. I don't stick to 33 items but I do limit what I own. I love fashion and I have found that by rotating in different things every three months I don't get tired of things.

Why do I feel so guilty putting my baby doll in the trash? She has a plastic head, arms, and legs, and a cloth body that is deteriorated. The fabric is so old the head is practically falling off... Help!

Bless you heart. I had one made like that.. I bought material and stuffing and made her a new body. I put it away for years and then finally gave it to my daughter. She's keeping it and loved getting it. I hope you can do the same with yours.

Dawn, what would your advice be for a family of 5 living in 965 square feet? And the biggest problem... my husband is an ebay reseller so he buys things from Thrift stores and resells them on ebay so he has filled our basement with the ebay inventory. I feel so overwhelmed. Is there any way to be a minimalist with my husband's side hustle? I keep telling him he's undoing all of my decluttering progress. 😅

Oopsies! That could become a frustrating difference between the two of you. Are you familiar with Dana k White? Her container concept is an eye-opener. Communication is key with the partner. Let him know that he can continue to do this, if it really brings him happiness to handle all that inventory, as well as joy and money. But limit the 'storage' of said stuff to one room in your house, or he has to hire storage somewhere for the eBay items. It would otherwise influence you & your family too much to live inside an eBay storage locker! Does he sell a lot? Or is it more about the acquisition, rather than the actual sales? Tough talk, but clear boundaries need to be discussed, as this not only concerns him, but his Whole family, both physically and mentally! 🍀

If an average US home has 300000 items then, to get that down to half in a year I think you would have to decutter about 411 items a day! Wow (my maths maybe wrong, correct me if so).

You are right! I am on year 2 and I know I still have more to let go. And I am probably below average for the amount of items.

@@bethfroeba7416 I am a few years in, it’s becoming easier as kids get older, if I ignore their bedrooms! I just had a lightbulb moment to think about it mathematically, it helps me be more ruthless.

I pack my stuff I’m unsure of in a bin and take it to my parents and just store it in my old room. Then after a few months, I go through that bin and oh it’s so easy to donate at that point. I may keep one or two items, but out of an entire bin, I call that a success lol

You seem over extreme with your thoughts on minimalism You must also be demanding to everyone in your home to live like you do And It seems you could get upset if everything is not put back in place right away If we are obsessed with anything, it can cause more harm than good I know you make a lot of money doing these videos And I’m sure you stay so busy with this topic that you believe it’s not harming you or your family

There is a difference between passion & obsession. Dawn is definitely passionate since she experienced the messy then minimal life style. If she were obsessed, she'd be irrational. Yet she is very rational & intentional. She's so passionate because the changes she's made have been so dramatically life changing in wonderful ways, for herself & family. Plus, she genuinely wants to help others. However,I do think there is a fine line between passion & obsession. I can see how someone new to her content could misinterpret her way of life. 💙
