Nick is really good with people. I would have told the kid a 10.7 is completely unrealistic and ended it there but nick took a better approach

I think it’s because a school can have team of a bunch of cross country people but there are only 3 spots for the 100
@carsonmalleet4367
@carsonmalleet4367 3 жыл бұрын
@@erickrochette1714 that’s not exactly how that works. Schools have a limited number of roster spots in general due to title IX, and they can do whatever they want with those spots. You could have a team with like 15 sprinters and only 7-8 distance runners or vice versa, for example.

I did the same thing as what Nick did. I was just getting into running and ran a 20:21 5k. A year later I shaved off 3 minutes off my time for a 5k for a total time of 17:24. And now I race half marathons because I grew to love the longer distance

10.7 100 is ridiculous and an 18:00 is a mediocre high school time. Wtf are those times

It’s cause he’s more of a sprinter probably,typically great sprinters can run like a 10-12 second 100m or a sub-60 400,however because of their lack of experience in pacing themselves they can’t run the 5K as fast I know a guy who runs a 52 second 400 but a 17:45 5k

You guys are tripping. You realize usain bolts 9.58 100m time is literally the WORLD RECORD And he ain’t running a 14 minute 5k. And even IF he was, according to you guys, he would go even faster. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Try a couple of master events, or do some time trials and plug the numbers into an age graded calculator. Find the event that gives you highest % result. I used to be middle distance runner but I seem to still have my strength and now the sprints are my best. I am age 60 btw. example my 10 seconds for 60m gives a 77% rating which is very good for state/provincial level over 80% would be national level over 90% would be world level www.mastersathletics.net/index.php?id=2595

What do I do if I enjoy all of it? I love long distance runs but I also love hitting the weights and doing sprint intervals. Would just picking a middle distance be the best of both worlds?
@SreyasKadiyala

Yeah, I'd say do something like the 800m because with that you need the speed and strength of a sprinter and the endurance of a distance runner. However, It may not be right for you so try it out. that's my suggestion at least.

Nick, what about us old guys who aren't in school anymore? I'm turning 31 and I have no idea what event or distance I like best. I entered an admittedly non competitive 8k virtual race and got 3rd out of like 700 people, but my body type heavily suggests I should be in middle distance or shorter. How do I find out what I'm best at?
@CelticGuardian77
@CelticGuardian77 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what kind of muscle fibres you have and what you enjoy. Basically there are 2 types of muscle fibres: fast twitch and slow twitch, usually the average person has about 50/50 of the two types but elite sprinters have more fast twitch and distance runners have more slow twitch. I suggest running an 100m race, running an 400 or 800m race and running a 5k, then just compare your time to the average and whichever one is higher relative to the average time is probably what you’ll be best at. Don’t forget you have to enjoy what you’re doing to really get better at it like how I enjoy doing sprints because I have quite long legs and enjoy doing explosive short activities. Take all this with a grain of salt as i’m indeed no expert on the topic but I still hope this message helps you to find your strength! All the best, The Wok
