"Make the painting you can make today and then keep painting." Excellent advice! Because that is exactly it: If you put too much pressure on yourself, you suffocate your motivation. You look at the pictures of advanced painters and you want to be as good as them, but you know you are not there yet and many think: "I'll never get there. I'll never be that good." Maybe that is right, maybe not. But with that attitude you'll never know. So: Do it! Practise! And you'll improve! That's what I keep telling myself, too.

yeah, and to keep going you have to enjoy something about painting, either a part of the process, detailing, feeling of finished work.

Excellent advice on just starting and making the mistakes anyway. We learn far more that way. AND when people think they're saving time by getting it perfect the first time, it's not necessarily the case. What you learn from being willing to make mistakes will carry you farther and if you try the same painting again, it will actually go faster since you are familiar with it already.

The major points you make are very simple , iterative nature of painting everyday, I enjoy that you make great progress on very small panels..thats what tells me how painting everyday is so valuable

I would love to see a master studies/copies video from you. I think I need to do that myself - I get defeated before I even start because I over-think and worry that my composition isn't right, I can't find a subject I like, etc. I think a master study would help me just get started so I can develop the skills. This is so helpful to think about. Your videos are so helpful. It realllllly resonates with me as do all your videos. Thank you again, Chelsea! You inspire me.

I'd certainly be interested in a video on master copies. I often sit down to paint and hours later realise I've spent the entire time combing through my photos looking for a subject and just not feeling inspired. I've decided that at times when I don't know what I want to paint I should copy a piece by an artist I love and who's style I would like to incorporate.

I’m loving your videos. I’m at that stage of “ I have a bunch of unfinished and finished canvases and a studio finally, but my work needs consistency and I need to keep focused. I am researched the marketing but with your wisdom, will produce 1st and foremost. I was too far ahead of myself. Need to pin down my style

Finding a personal style is a strange experience. It's like finding something before you get there...Since in your mind or muscle memory you aren't aware of what you will be when you get there...So if if I ask myself what will I be like before getting there..the fails you have to "push" through..A total unknown which you will discover..Our brains can learn, our muscles will learn..So enjoying you "pushing through"..discovery!

Is this considered some “dry technique” that leverages the canvas & brush textures themselves? I’m a noob so it’s just an amateur observation. Thanks.

I noticed in this demonstration that you started with lighter colors instead of washes to sketch in the composition, then followed with darker and darker values. This appears to be a contradiction of the thick over lean used in other videos. Correcting on canvas when you lay down dark(thin) values first can be very difficult, so that soft edges become essential to the start process. Is the thicker paint(dry brush) method a reverse of the "darks first" approach?
@MicheleMei1
@MicheleMei1 3 жыл бұрын
The thick over thin and fat over lean principles have nothing to do with color or value. And the beauty of oil paint is you just wait for the layer to dry if you want to change the color.
@glumsulk
@glumsulk 3 жыл бұрын
Thick over thin is more for alla prima. Fat over lean is specific to mediums and is so a painting doesnt crack essentially, and is for indirect painting techniques (where you wait for layers to dry in between instead of all in one sitting which is what alla prima means. Thickness of paint has nothing to do with the color of paint either. Its a personal preference whether you start with lighter or darker or mid values. Watercolor you have to work from light to dark out of necessity. Oil painting is an opaque medium relatively speaking and so you can go from dark to light (or light OVER dark if that makes more sense) if you wish.
