My life has been changed since I found out that I am warm and delicate. Even even category has a spectrum. Girl I hear you! When it comes to foundation: forget skin tone categories all together (eg warm, cool, neutral). They honestly do NOT serve you in choosing a foundation. Instead, you only want to look for your UNDERTONE. What is the dominant color? AND then you need to see if you need any color correction. Because that’s what you need to match. I wrote an incredibly detailed post about this. If you’re interested go check it out: www.kendrapowell.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-best-looking-foundation ❤️

The 1b test helped me finally solve my undertone mystery! I have a lot of redness in my face so that often left me confused, and the usual 12 seasons system either typed me as a soft summer or a soft autumn. Every foundation I own has to be “neutral” undertone or I look too yellow or too pink. This video cleared up so much confusion, I’m absolutely warm and delicate. It makes sense in retrospect! I always get complimented more when I wear muted reds, olive greens, creams, etc. Thank you so much, Merriam!

I'm an olive skin tone, trying to figure out if I'm muted cool or muted warm, but I have a question slightly different from this: Aside from just figuring out which color you are, what if you're a muted warm but you've always gravitated towards muted cool colors? What if the cool colors are some of your favorites to wear? Personally, I'm aware that warm tones might melt more into my skin, but I actually hate the way they look and they are just not part of my artistic aesthetic. How do you balance your artistic preference in color with the colors that naturally flatter you, especially if they are completely opposite from each other? Would love a video on how a muted cool could successfully wear some muted warms, or how a muted warm could successfully wear muted cools, how a bright could successfully pull off something more muted etc. Maybe it's just wearing cool colors that have a warm overcast, etc.? Would love your thoughts on this. Would hate to wear colors I don't actually enjoy just because they "look good on me."

So glad you have created a separate video for gold overtones with blue undertones. I have olive skin so have exactly that mix. It is frustrating as most people consistently talk about “warm“ and don’t distinguish between a golden warmth (olive skin) and a peach warmth. It makes a massive difference in terms of what colours suit. A long time ago I was classified by Colour Me Beautiful as a deep winter. However I have recently found out that olive skin is a forth undertone and so is in its own category! - and best suits the warmer end of deep winter and the cooler end of deep autumn colours. It’s been a revelation!

I'm still a bit confused, even after watching a bunch of your videos. I can't tell if I'm a cool and delicate, or a warm and muted. There's colors from both that either look really great against my skin, or totally wash me out. I'm also a "pale olive", so lots of colors even within the same family can both wash me out or look absolutely fantastic. Mila Kunis's colors (from your olive video) work, *except* the top and 2nd to last colors- those make me look pale and washed out. Optic white actually does work for me (brings out the more tanned, olive tones), but ivorys make me look sickly. Brighter, mid-blues work fantastic, but so do deep Navys. Its so confusing, haha. *editing to add that I also look great wearing Silver, Gold and Rose Gold. The yellow gold can't be too bright, though, it needs to be a darker yellow.

I find your videos amazing and your color theory to be the only one that is 100% accurate yet also the easiest one I have ever seen. I always knew I was warm, since my skin has a strong yellow undertone, but sometimes warm and bright colors made me look weird. I kind of got the memo I was muted, while taking a more detailed version of the 12 seasons test, where I was a toasted autumn and the autumn category was supposed to be warm, dark and muted, but I never knew why they put redheads in this category and some colors that are cool as the best colors lol Now I know what was wrong with the theory, yet it was accurate for describing me as I have dark brown hair with orange undertones, that sometimes looks almost very dark, sometimes pretty light towards the ends, but in some lights looks mousy, which indicates that it's warm and muted. Same with my eye color and my skin is yellow and fair

I have auburn hair so I am neutral, but I think I lean to the warm side. Definitely the 1b test helped me the most. I think I look better in peach than in a cool baby pink. Your videos are so helpful!! I would love to see a video on hair color for the different undertones and olive tones. I’m pretty clearly cool and bright/radiant and olive. But I have some inconsistencies. I clearly look better in royal blue, royal purple, and fuchsia. However, I don’t look great in white, although I do look worse in light grey, so that’s that. But with jewelry it’s confusing. Anyway, you would think that means that cool tones for my hair work better, but actually, warm golden tones look better in my hair than ash. Ashy highlights look awful. Maybe the cool/warm tone spectrum is different for hair?

Hello, could you address how thin skin can effect how hard to find your undertone. I’ve notice with myself and other. That thick skin is easier to read since this skin is much more even tone in color. While time Skin seems to much harder, since you see more distracting color like vain, reddens, and other skin pigmentation all over the body. Which in my case is harder to see the main undertone.

If a shade has peach undertone they are for warm delicate? Very confusing. What about neutral with warm undertone?

I’m new to your channel and watching your videos, trying to learn color analysis, the “Artistic License” theory. When you use terms interchangeably, it got confusing. I’m assuming bright colors are “radiant” in type and muted colors are “delicate” in type? Undertone Types: WARM & bright/radiant or WARM & muted/delicate or COOL & bright/radiant or COOL & muted/ delicate (Is this the Artistic License version of the four seasons). I’ll check to see if I missed a previous video that clarifies this. I try to follow your links to recommendations of previous videos. If you can organize playlists of color videos in ordered it may help us newcomers to your channel! Your tips are great! The orange/magenta test really helped after the blue/yellow/brown/grey test were indistinguishable for me. I am so excited to learn more!🥰

I’ve been watching your videos for a while and they’re really professional. One thing I cannot understand regarding myself is that my best makeup colors are different from my best clothing colors. For reference, I’m an olive undertone and my skin is pale to light, I have hazel eyes and wear teal hair color. So, the thing is, best colors on my eyes are warm and muted, like peach or warm pink, and cool colors make me look weird (also olive green has the same effect somehow). As for clothes, I look my best in cool colors like cool gray, violet, dark cool reds, teal and so on. I guess my face can’t be warm if my body is cool or vice versa, but it kinda is?

Awesome video! I have a really hard time. I think I'm very pale olive but I also am quite gothy in my sense of style, what do I do if I kinda instinctively like the grey skin look and mistake that for what actually looks good on me? I feel like I can wear both cool/warm and delicate colours. Some days I look very yellow but other days I don't. I can't wear gold and yet I love purples on me despite that my skin has this weird yellow to it. Yet yellow foundation is too yellow and even neutral foundation is still off ! That's why I concluded with olive XD

Based on what you just described, you're probably right in assuming that you're warm and delicate and also olive. I also used to think some of my best colors were navy, black and wine, and I will still wear them and look quite good in them. Carol Pardee We have kinda similar coloring and I consider myself warm and delicate. People with warm skin tones have an easier time looking good in cool colors; cool toned people struggle with warm colors. That’s part of the reason cool colors can look good. You are also medium to high contrast. Black will tie in nicely with your dark hair. Warm toned person with blue eyes may have an easier time wearing blue even if it’s a cool color because it picks up on their natural features. Finally, I think I’m olive and I don’t look amazing in pale pink or peach. Since you have high contrast, those colors will wash you out. I’d suggest dusty pink/mauve (muted cool) and terracotta (muted warm), that should help.

Peach goes well with warm undertones only. Warm undertones can handle wearing cool colors better than vice versa. But they’re not their best colors.

Bring olive doesn’t mean anything. It’s either cool or warm undertones.

I didn't even have to try on a piece of clothing for question 1a. I've got a jumper that is magenta and even though it's actually not my style I love it... Now I understand why, it's just fitting my cool undertone. Thanks for the video!

I think I'm warm and delicate, as both orange and magenta make me look weird. I love the way peach looks on me, while pink makes me look dead. However, there are certain shades of blue that I think I look amazing in, so this is where I get confused.

Can you say why we use magenta but not blue color? I thought that whith blue it would be more easy because it is the most cold color. I'm curious why is it magenta?

Kamila M. yes! I look best in all blues but fushia /magenta somehow manages to wash me out almost as much as orange. It’s very hard to find a system that works, it’s very intuitive.

I think that's maybe because blue is easier than magenta to wear for warm toned skin, so blue might be misleading to see a difference while magenta is more obvious.

This video was super helpful!! I used to think I had a warmer skin tone for some reason, just based on the thought that the color pink generally looked good on me. It's good to know that I actually have a cooler skin tone because I think magenta looks much better on me than orange! From this test, I think my skin tones are cool and radiant. I was suspecting that I was not muted because I tried on a muted dusty pink, much more muted than the brighter pink colors I had, and noticed that it definitely did not look as good - it kind of dragged me down!

If you have an iPhone, I would suggest looking up the app called “iHairstyle.” You can upload a pic of yourself and change both haircolor and even hairstyle. It also includes fantasy colors like hot pink and lavender.

Yey a new video! Hey Merriam, your colour analysis videos are so enlightening thank you! I was wondering, in addition to undertone and depth is it possible to identify the level of green or pink in your skin? And if yes, does this affect influence the best colours in your season? Would greens suit olive skins better and pinks suit pink skins better? Or is it best to go for complimentary colours? Also should your hair colour match your undertone or the pink/green in your skin or both to look harmonious? Sorry for opening a can of worms!

@@caryljones1450 So from what I understand, the best colors are the same -- they depend on the blue vs. yellow dominance of the undertone. However, people with a red dominance to their skin tone (as opposed to green) basically have less problems because some rosiness always looks healthy on the skin, and they don't look as bad as olive-toned people in their wrong reds and pinks. So, for example, I'm warm and delicate + olive, and like Merriam said, one of my worst colors is an icy pink, it looks completely separate and makes my skin look really bad. If I had more red to my skin, it wouldn't be as hard for me to pull off. Also, if your skin leans red, then you would look better with red hair (or any hair color with red undertones) than someone who has more green to their skin. I hope this helps!

I tried wearing bright orange and magenta and while from a personal choice aspect I preferred the orange, I don’t think the magenta looked bad on me either. Then I tried the light pink and peach test. I’m gonna be honest I really don’t know which suits me better. Part of the problem is I have a very yellowy olive skin tone on my body and neck but I have a lot of acne scarring on my face and I am also super pale so my face always pulls really pink. It’s hard to tell what actually looks good on me when I have such a contrast of colors going on in my skin tone. I will say though, in makeup I’ve noticed that if a blush or lipstick has any pink in them it pulls way more pink on me than what it looks like in the pan. I’ve bought bronzers before that I use as blush because they show up as slightly pink on me. Same with clothing, if I wear something slightly pink it looks WAY more pink on me than it does on the hanger. I know for sure that I am a muted type rather than a bright type. Does this mean that I am a light warm olive?

Maybe a dumb question, but if cool undertones look good in all black, does that mean that warm undertones look good in white.... or is white cool, too?
