Spybait fishing is a japanese technique that is slowing taking off in the American market. It relies on the aggressive nature of bass to hunt down the bait. If you want a bait that will catch reaction fish and finesse fish at the same time, look no further than the spybait.
Whether you're searching for early spring bass or reactive post spawn bass, the spinbait is worth a try. It will draw bites when no other reaction bait will work.

I can't believe you guys haven't gotten to 50K subscribers yet. You guys are one of my top 2 favorite youtube fishing channels for learning about everything fishing. You guys and Flukemaster are the best. Since I am on the west coast it's awesome that I found you guys. Your methods work a lot better for me being in Southern California. Thanks for the awesome content and keep up the great work. Hopefully one day I can get up north and use your guide services to really learn. I have done that with Flukemaster when I go out to South Carolina/Georgia, but now I need to do it with you guys.

I'm now fishing the small Duo's on a Dobyns Sierra 701, 7 ft., 01 power, extra fast and Curado BFS. I was using braid, but switched over to straight fluoro and like it much better. I can cast so much further with it over spinning rigs (even high end spinning rigs). I have enjoyed it so much I'm going to get a Megabass P5 Destroyer BFS rod and an Aldebaren BFS. The spybaits are alot of fun and effective, I use them high in the column when crappie are hitting minnows close to surface and then work them deeper for bass and walleye when they're sitting on points and whatnot.

I think you hit on an interesting point talking about bass following the bait. I don't think a lot of anglers realize just how often this happens. Not about bass, but a case in point was a trout fishing trip to Lake Tahoe. I was up on a rock in a cove about 20 feet above the water. My buddy was on the shore throwing a Rapala Countdown and I could see straight down into that crystal clear water. There was a flat about 5 feet deep that went out about 15 or 20 yards with an abrupt drop off into much deeper water . I could not believe what I was seeing. On his first 6 or 8 casts he had maybe 12 or 15 BIG trout following that plug some only in he's behind and some were HUGE..I'm talking 26-30 inch fish or even more. My buddy had no earthly idea this was happening until I told him and understandably I am not sure he believed me, but he kept casting. I was coaching him, telling him to kill the bait,, or dip it, whatever. If he killed it, the trout stopped until he moved it again if he ripped it, they sped up to keep up with the bait. Eventually fewer and fewer fish were following until , after about 20 or so casts, they stopped altogether. He never did have one commit and not a single fish went past the edge of the drop off onto the flat. The point is had I not been in a unique place to observe my friend would have never known there was a trout anywhere in the vicinity. These weren't bass but I am pretty sure this same thing happens a LOT more than we realize. If you and Tim could swing some videos of this behavior and illustrate some triggering action that would be awesome (difficult but awesome).

Matt, I was always under the impression that this was a bait for suspended fish (open water, big points etc.) but you mentioned catching them in cover. What are you looking for or condition wise what are you looking for when you decide to throw these? Does wind help the bit as well?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
A slight ripple definitely helps. Once it gets really wavy I set it down as it doesn't have the "draw" of a spinnerbait, a-rig, chatterbait, etc.

Been fishing these for years now and I still haven’t really figured out when the best time is to fish them it’s just some thing I throw whenever I think about it and nothing else is working sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. When do you think is the best time to throw these? In this video you were saying they were reasons it wasn’t good for that day. What are you looking for That would indicate it’s time to throw these?

actually the the Realis Spinbait 80 has significantly more body roll than the Jackall. It also cast further. There's the Spinbait 80, Spinbait 80 gfix (this one has more cork screw roll) The 80 Gfix is cast super far. Both have a very cool shimmy. Realis also makes a larger version (the 90). good vid!

Very true Realis Spinbait 80 and 80 Gfix and 90 and the new Alpha 72 all have way more roll than the Jackall I prop. They all have shimmy and the Jackall doesn't. the jackall falls head first.

@tacticalbassin What time of year are you typically throwing a spy bait? Is it more of a cold water bait when you’re mostly finesse fishing during the winter months? I’ve only thrown one for under 5 minutes because I didn’t think it looked that good going through the water. But now after watching this video I feel like I have some confidence in it if I dedicate sometime to throw it and learn how and when to fish one.

Hey Matt another great video but couple questions. I see you had bluebird skies with few clouds so are those the best days to throw it because it gives more visibility for the fish? Also water temp, is it better for cold water? Is it a good prespawn or spawn lure? Thanks so much man!!!
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
So far I haven't seen water temp matter, they just eat it. Bluebird with a little chop is ideal. On this day the trouble was massive schools of shad swimming all around... I needed something like an A-rig to draw the fish's attention.

Prime time to use this is Spring and Fall...think Jerk bait minus the twitching! The 90 size can get down to 20ft. while the smaller 80 size is right around 10 - 12ft. Like Matt said, this is a straight retrieve lure, the lure does all the work for you just have a slow and steady retrieve and you're all set. This is the info I've learned by studying these baits. I'm about to buy a few of the Duo's to try myself.

Matt, great video!!! I have a question, we have had some success with them here in PA but it seems we have to have a lot of water clarity for them to be effective. We do decent with jerkbaits with 2' of visibility but with spybaits anything under 3' and we don't do well at all, so I wanted to know if you encountered this or have you been able to find a time or place that they work in more stained water conditions?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
I've been able to get them in stained water as long as the fish are in visible cover and I could throw to them. It doesn't work as a search bait until the clarity improves.

How shallow can the IProp run effectively? I live in nj and have only 6 ft or less of water depth in 90% of my lakes. I've tried the lucky craft and the storm arashi spin and cant really effectively fish them without sinking deep and hanging up in mud. Ive heard the Jackall Iprop runs way more shallow than the others and wanted some feedback before I waste another $15 on a bait I cant throw most of the time. Thanks!

But looking at Tackle Warehouse, the Lucky Craft Pointer 90 says 1/2 oz., so may want to start with that on my lighter Jerkbait casting setup.

Matt, you mentioned early in the video that the conditions weren't right for the spy bait. What conditions are right for spy bait?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
It will work most of the time. The problem this day was giant bait balls that were much more attractive to the bass than my one little spybait swimming amongst thousands of shad.

The most remarkable thing about the iProp is the way fish absolutely HATE this thing. They don't just hit it, the fish destroy it! You WILL need to replace the trebles. I caught a smallie and a walleye at the same time on that bait, something I have never seen anywhere by anyone before.

Hi guys: Weird problem with the Duo Realis. I have found that that lead spinner just slices up my line! I catch a couple fish and the spybait goes sailing on the next cast never to be seen again. Any tips to avoid this? I threw them first on 8 pound mono and then on 20 pound braid. Do I just need to retie after 3 to 4 casts?

Fish 5 or 6 pound fluoro ML rod 7 plus ft. and very spinning reel. Never hear of this problem and fished the technique for several years many many fish. On all propped baits always check the shaft make sure you dont have fine hair, moss strands or debris. Essentials to spybaiting2 covers this in detail (possible set ups). A friend of mine just won on this technique this summer and set all time records, nearly 100 lbs of bass for 4 days

You are very informative. definitely a good fisherman. but...I'm from Illinois and we have to work a lot harder to catch big bass than u cali guys. if u ever fish here make a vid and I will definitely be watching it. It's apples and oranges I guess? good vid tho
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
Hang in there bud, its not as apples and oranges as you may think. We're blessed to catch a lot of giant bass but there are a lot of guys out here that have never caught a 5 lber. And regardless, we intentionally adapt our content to speak to the broader market... we're not "western" focused at all. Thanks for supporting the channel in Illinois!

hey, off topic question. I can't find a knot that is thin enough to pass through guide on my micro guide rod. I have tried the fg, which works great on a leader that is larger than the braid. But, on light line it doesn't hold. Albright is OK but still sticks, but the Alberto or the 6 turn surgeons are just too big. Looking for advice here. The rod is a 6'9" MH.

Andrew Dickens fg will hold. if you cant get it to hold it is user error or you are using to heavy of braid for the size leader.
@tacticalbassin

We don't have a solution for you. We fish a blood knot and it comes through semi-micros, never tried it in a micro guide.

Great video why do spin your line on your eyelets when your going to put away the rods
@danielbryant325
@danielbryant325 7 жыл бұрын
I do the same thing. it helps keep the lines from getting all wrapped up in the rod boxes and also helps keep the baits tight on the hook keeper. It does work really well if you do not have rod socks.
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
Daniel nailed it. It keeps the lines from tangling with each other on deck or in the rod locker and keeps the baits from scratching the blanks because they're held tight to the rod.

Can you go over the reason why you stop throwing the baits, you where saying not enough drawing power due to there being to much baitcasting. Can you elaborate on that.
@kirtnozu4168
@kirtnozu4168 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Waldon we was talking about how there was alot of bait in the water so there wasnt enough drawing power from the spybait to get bites, just the wrong conditions
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 7 жыл бұрын
What I meant by too much bait was that there were huge balls of shad (a 2-4" baitfish) in the area. Literally thousands and thousands of minnows and my spybait was the exact same size/profile... nothing to make me stand out from the crowd.
