How to fish Dry-Dropper on a Mountain Stream

Spent a late winter afternoon fly fishing in a small mountain stream in the mountains of Virginia. It was Spring like conditions and the Brownies and Brookies were looking up. Caught numerous trout using a dry dropper rig on my euro rod.
A fun day, as most of my fish came on a dry fly. My pattern, the High-n-Dry Hare's Ear (Blue Winged Olive color) in a size 16 accounted for at least 80 percent of my fish. A size 18 Walt's with a pink bead and a Walt's with an orange collar accounted for the rest.
For some fast, fun action go hit some of your mountain freestones as the fish are super opportunistic and eager to hit. Also, consider adding the dry dropper technique to your euro tool box.

Excellent video, I was in SNP last week, big browns were crushing pardigons and emergers, all 9 - 10+ inches, very few on dries. Brookies hitting dry and wet flies, but still mostly wet. Dry should be heating up.

Scott, I use the same leader for nymphing as well. 16ft of 4x to 4ft of 5x sighter. I am a big fan of using monos made for euro. Sempe or Pezon & Michel. They don’t have the stretch that regular sighter material has.

I like 4 feet because I find it can pickup more subtle movements with a longer one. I find shorter ones don’t give as much feedback. You can only get Pezon overseas in Spain or France. You have to pay for overseas shipping. If you google Pezon & Michel Color Line, you’ll find it.

Hello long time listener first time caller 🤪...I really dig all the awesome info and videos! You have a ton of knowledge, and it shows when your explaining this or that...is your dropper tag for dry monofilament or flourocarbon...currently I'm trying this method, however I keep losing the tag and dry fly...under the sighter I have about 5 feet of 6x floro with the a surgeons knot as the stopper about 18 inches. I think it's because my 5x mono I used for the tag is old... Also do you fish the dry dropper rig like a tipical dry dropper or do you tight line the nymph and try not to touch the dry? Any info would be very helpful if any of this made sense 🤔 lol thank you

Hey Isaac. Appreciate you being a long time listener! I use flourocarbon for everything below my sighter. The same diameter, as well. No need to have 2 different diameters. If it keeps breaking at the knot, I’m thinking it’s bad tippet (weak) or a weak knot. Make sure you are tying a clean Uni knot and seat it against the stopper (surgeons). When I fish dry dropper with my euro rod, I keep all of my leader off the water, just like nymphing. You can still fish 30ft out and keep it all off the water. It really gives you perfect drifts this way. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. Tight lines!

If you find one full of trout, they are usually more than willing to eat. I haven't fished these streams in NY. I mainly do it in my home state of VA. Hey Jim-Appreciate the support! I do use a weighted nymph under the dry. You won't be able to cast a micro leader without the weight of the nymph. This day I had a 2.3mm bead under my dry. Cool to see you fish with a dry dropper. We have many shallow streams where that would be super helpful. Can you give more detail on the dry dropper set up? Do you still have the colored 4x to 5x sighter and tippet ring then a few feet of 6x or 7X tippet? Also I noticed you line looked white instead of yellow. Wondering if you have a different reel or maybe it was just the lighting. Also after catching several fish I wondered how you do you net set up. I have my net hooked to a magnet that hangs on my back and pulls away easily but takes two hands to put it back. Thanks for posting and for always answering my questions. David, I use the same leader set up when fishing dry-dropper (most of the time). It was probably the lighting that made it look more pale. You can use a micro leader for dry-drop just as long as your dry isn’t big and bushy. I especially like it for small streams like this because of the delicate presentation. My net set up is easy. I like it super accessible and easy to grab, yet I can drop it and let it hang and stay out of the way. I use a Fanny pack, so I take a piece of paracord and make a loop around my left suspender on the back of my waders (that way it will hang to my left because I grab it with my left hand). I attached a net retractor to the loop and hang my net off of that. On the side of my net a put a magnet. The other magnet is attached to my waist strap on my pack. I will keep the side of the net attached to that to keep it from swinging around everywhere. Also, it makes it super easy to grab. It is always in the same place. Hope this makes sense. Nice catches! Good to see you video on the local waters again, man that water is good looking. Curious about the water @10:25, what made you cast there? Sort of an odd pool for the mountains, I would have probably passed it for the obvious head. I think I fished the mountains the same day as you from your description of the weather and I was finding that the fish were still concentrated deep and at the heads and had not taken up feeding spots mid pool and at the tails (except for the dinks, which that brownie was not). Was there depth there and I just can't see it?

Thanks so much! The water was in awesome shape. @10.25 the tailout of that pool has a couple of rocks and some darker bottom to the right that have some nice cover. It was about a foot and half deep. It really had the best of both worlds because they could still have that cover and move to the tailout to feed. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks, Mark. My leader is 18mm (4x) Pezon & Michel mono to 4ft of 16mm (5x) Pezon bi-color sighter (Sempe is a good substitute). I was using 7x tippet this day. Tony, in this video I’m using a long Euro nymphing leader (approx 24ft long). I’m using a 10ft 2wt euro rod made to cast long, light leaders. No fly line is coming out of the guides. If you are using a traditional fly rod, I would recommend a 9ft leader (minimum). Nothing more than 5x. Everything is situational…sometimes casting is up and across, other times straight upstream and back to you. Only on a larger river would you fish a downstream dry. It’s more of an across and downstream to get a good drift, however they are usually shorter drifts. You are always putting yourself in the right position to make the best, drag free drift you can. Appreciate it, Urban Hunter! My rod and reel here is a T&T Contact ll 10’ 2wt. My reel is a Ross Evolution LTX 4/5. My micro leader (which I recently did a video on) is the one I use on most streams. The adjustable dropper is great for these small streams. I don’t have a video, but it’s super simple. Just tie a triple surgeons about 18 inches up and cut the tag off. Now for the dropper, cut about 10 inches off to work with and just tie a perfection loop at the end then loop it around your line above the triple surgeon’s that will act as a stopper. Hope this helps. I’ll put this in the queue for a future video.

Every now and then if your dry gets water logged or starts sinking, it will slide a little bit because the surface “grabs” it. But if it is nice and dry-it will stay in place. Just don’t force your cast. Appreciate you watching!

Gerry, I'll try my best to explain here: Tie a triple surgeon’s in your main line about 18 inches up (or whatever will be the shallowest water you will fish). Cut the tag close. Now your surgeon’s knot is the stopper 18in up. Take a piece of tippet (10 in or so…give yourself some to work with). Now tie a small perfection loop in it. Take this piece and put it under and perpendicular to your main line above the stopper knot. Now take the end of the that piece, go over the main line and slide it through the loop and pull it tight above the knot. It will slide up and down and stop at the knot. Make sure your perfection tag is about 5in or so. If it is longer it will tangle. Hope this helps and appreciate you watching!

Patrick, that video is meant to add a dropper tag for nymphing that will jam down to your knot, when you need to add a new tag. It isn’t meant to slide up and down. You can do them same with a Uni-knot. The perfection loop is easier to slide up and down.

Brett, I’ll be doing a video soon about it. In the meantime, just take a small piece of tippet (6-8in) and tie a small perfection loop in it. On your main tippet, add an 18in piece with triple surgeon’s knot. Now loop the perfection loop piece above the knot (and pull it tight). You can slide it up or down. The knot will catch the loop from sliding down when you hook a fish. Hope this helps.

Love that stream, not sure how recent but are you sure water temps were 50? Have been fishing streams very close and last Fri it was 42 to start at 8a and 44 when I quit at 3p. The week before they were running 36-39 despite warm air temps. Did manage to catch some on dries but really cleaned up with nymphing mid column emerger patterns (eg cdc hackle beadheads).

I was going to ask you which 1 you liked better the 3wt or 2wt. Thinking about getting 1. Was looking at a moonshine or a cortland nymph but just going to spend the extra and get it over with.

Honestly love both. Each has a place. I like the 3 for med to larger water and stronger currents where I know I won’t be using less than 6x. The 2 I like for med to larger water that don’t have the super strong currents and where I know 6x will be the heaviest I go. If I am on rivers like the Delaware or the Farmington (or big Western rivers) I would use my 3 because they have massive currents. Hope this helps.

Hey Kendrick. I don't think it would help. I am a big fan of using mono specifically designed for euro nymphing. Sempe is a great one (which you can find here in the States). Also, Pezon & Michel is great. Very subtle, stays straight and low stretch. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

What’s your leader setup on dry/dropper? Are you using straight 4x? Or are you tapering down? And how many feet do you usually use on your leader? In some of the shots it seems like you got a decent amount of leader out your tip. But I think I see the micro loop connection. I usually use around 14’ wondering if I should lengthen it?

Preston, on my 10ft rod I have 16ft of 4x to 4ft of 5x sighter. So it’s approx 20ft to my tippet ring. It’s the same for when I straight nymph.

@@OldDominionTroutBum last question (for now lol) do you use that same leader set up on your 10’2wt when you are jigging a streamer?

Same leader for jigging streamers. Setting the hook is no different when jigging streamers. Set it just like your nymphing. The only thing is I’ll use 5x or 5.5x tippet. (When nymphing I usually is 6-7x). If I’m fishing with my 3wt. I use a 4x leader and 4x sighter. If you want to carry a couple of leaders and have one for just jigging streamers…. You could have 3x to 3x. I just like the versatility of going from streamer to nymphs if I want to.

Keith, on my 10ft rod I have 16ft of 18mm (4x) Pezon & Michel or Sempe mono. My sighter is 4ft of 16mm (5x) bi-color sighter to my tippet ring. I use Pezon & Michel or Hanak sighter material. I was using about 4ft of 7x tippet. Hope this helps.
