A local pet shop owner not only showed me how to correctly fit the ANCOL fig 8 lead, he took control of my 18kg labrador puppy and corrected him for just 25 mins before everything fell into place. Comfortable walking since and No marks on the dog at all and now he walks WITH me, instead of pulling and zigzagging and trying to control his walking time.I would definitley recommend this product.

These can create a lot of torque on the dogs head, leading to a lot of pain in their neck which can also cause damage. Their skin is a lot thinner than ours which means tissue damage can happen very easily. Just because a recue recommends this, doesn't mean it is good. The only way to teach a dog to walk on a loose lead is by lots of repetition using either a Y shaped harness or flat collar during training sessions, short lengths frequently until the new behaviour (walk on a nice loose lead) becomes engrained. There should be no quick fixes in dog training and equipment should never replace time and teaching a dog. These are aversive to the dog, that's why they work. An amazing, qualified Dog Trainer explained to me that the practice and repetition of teaching your dog loose lead with short lengths at first is to help them travel new neural pathways. The more those neural pathways are travelled, the wider they become so that the new behaviour (walking on a lovely loose lead) becomes engrained and the dog doesn't even have to think about it. It is how all mammals learn. However dogs can be very complex in how they learn and association and any pain or discomfort from a head collar (which is why they walk nicely on these things) can lead to negative associations with everything around them, even things that are not related, even the handler. Invest in a qualified, force free Dog Trainer who can evidence their accredited qualifications, you won't regret it and your dog will thank you for it. It is well worth it.

You wrote a lot and are right to some extend, but as you said yourself dogs are more complex than that. In my case I landed here, because the dog (small dog) I'm looking after started spotting, barking and also bark-lunging at dogs he doesn't like (which is one thing), but lately at children as well. At first I thought it's them running or skipping, but lately I came to the conclusion that that is not what is triggering him, because he misbehaves also with children walking by peacefully or into our direction. Or maybe it started with them running, but now has been internalised by him with children as a whole. Either way, his behavior is totally inacceptable. While being on the lookout for dogs is fine, I am either correcting his behavior or try positive reinforcement constantly, but children now is a completely different thing. I don't want this to go on any further or even lead to anything dangerous, so it's more responsible to REEDUCATE by using such a leash temporarily and additionally, than to wait till something happens. Even such a correction leash requires training and time, so I would not call that a shortcut. Also, this doesn't happen, when calmely introducing him to kids, but he will nevertheless meet unfamiliar children while being outside. Gentle methods like praising or correcting don't work and it's very difficult to keep an eye out for every possible child while talking him along. He does NOT even always react, so understanding the pattern is difficult, keeping him constantly distracted while being on my way somewhere (I mean I also need to walk and watch where we are going in general) is NOT possible. It's simply bad behavior and I am sure that the little one will hold no grudges after pointing out the reality to him with such a leash. For now I will try another method, but such a leash will be the next step, because if he does not improve he will have to wear a muzzle on public transport. Which is worse? Certainly not the correction leash.

The rope looks thick over the dogs nose, couldn’t they see it?

You really shouldn't use these as head halters, the rope dogs into them and as it's so thick it blocks their view

That's actually just a myth! If put on properly (the ring when it comes out should be in the back!) It won't cause any issues. It doesn't obstruct vision any more than a normal head collar, which is very little, and as long as you have it nice and loose and use a soft lead (no ropes!), it don't cause any friction.

It doesn't obstruct their view. And even if it did slightly obstruct their view, it's necessary for training. These are training leads and shouldn't be used forever. Every training lead has it's downsides. You need to remember for some of us our dogs are huge beasts and without the correct control they can become a danger to yourself, others and other dogs. If slightly obstructing my dogs view helps to stop his behavior then so be it.
