In this video I show you in full detail how to install a Velux top hung window with slate flashing kit. I go through the whole process including how to build the structural frame, how to fit the window sash, how to make your own felt collar, how to fit the flashing kit with associated slate work and how to fit the window. At the end of the video I show how to adjust the tension of the window springs, how to disengage the window springs and how to operate the window. In this example I use the GPL MK04 3070 (78cm x 98cm) top hung Velux window, and the EDL MK04 0000 slate flashing kit.

Always thought this was a daunting task. But with your clear instructions and real time explanations I followed and fitted as I went. (Watched the whole thing twice first). Few adjustments as I was using felt shingle tiles. But it all went smoothly. A huge thank you to you for your time and effort to film this.

Well I have just sat here for an hour and watched this and it has just flown by. I did actually fit four of these two years ago into my conservatory roof conversion and whilst I followed your video installation, wish I had had access to it two years ago. Thanks for that Pal, it’s the disengagement of the spring that i really needed to see , i made the boo boo of opening it fully while taking it out of the box , i was able to take the window out of the frame and fit the frame but when it came to the top flashing i couldn’t fit it until the springs were disengaged . 👍

Hello Pouse (around the House), thank you very much for your instructional film. This is much clearer than the original from Velux, nice also for the wise advice when unpacking the window and and sharing with the window frame. I will wait a while for a day without rain before I do the job. Greetings from the Netherlands, Ernst

Very useful and practical video. THANK YOU! Not always possible to follow the manuals. I twisted and turned regarding the use of the Velux underfelt collar as my windows are near the ridge and hip corner so will have to be inventive, but went for it at the end and will adapt as necessary. I installed two Colt Rotos around 30yrs ago and they need replacing. I'm 77yrs now and the wife didn't want me to do it. Luckily the roofer who was going to do the job in Dec (to be fair it was due to the horrendous amount of rain we had in November) wasn't able to do it. So this has given me the chance to make sure it will be done properly and save £1500 too. If you do stuff yourself you can always take a little extra time to do things 100% that the tradesman can't afford to do. So thank you for this. BTW, The JJRoofing videos are very good too.

Just wanted to say a very big thank you for this amazing video mate, it helped loads! We finally bought and installed a UK04 over the weekend. Glad I took my time to get the roof framing square, because we had the BDX insulation collar - If anyone buys this they should definitely add the full 60x45mm extra space as it becomes a very snug fit with little to no wiggle room to square the frame up. My neighbour gave me a hand with the installation, we kept this video on our phones to guide us through each step of the way! Not an easy job, but well worth the effort! Think I'll stick to installing Microsoft Windows from now on 😀 Thanks again mate!

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE well done mate! I did worry about it leaking but so far so good. Yeah great video mate. Hit the nail on the head perfectly regarding the snags you run into when fitting in situ.... Doing a fair amount of replacements at the moment on all roof types, using varying brands of window, and there is ALWAYS something that isn't as straight forward as the instructions attempt to make it look, so this video and similar ones are extremely helpful to tradesmen of all skill levels, so thanks alot!

Really good video, im about to fit my first velux in a new small extension slate roof. I haven't felt and battened the roof yet, would you fit the velux frame before felting? Then felt around it neatly and fit the battens so the slates work with the height of the velux? Im thinking that it may be easier to do a good job on the felt around the window if the battens weren't in the way. Any input would be appreciated 👍
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
You can do it either way to be honest. If you feel it's easier to line it up by doing frame first then go for it but you need your battens to line up right with facias also to get your slate overhang right. Maybe batten up to velux height in roof, then fit your frame and carry on with battens? I'm not a professional just a DIYer so there may be better ways to this. Best of luck with it and thanks for watching!

Nice video! I really enjoyed the good explanations and showing! Only downside is the audio. Some of the times I have a hard time hearing the speak, and in some clips it's very quieter where other clips are loud. Recommend you'd use a lavalier microphone (they come cheep these days) even with Bluetooth, and then leveling/evening out/normalizing the sounds throughout the videos in post.

Great video. Can you shed any light on why our window is trying to lift the top hung mechanism arms while on the centre pivot??
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
To use the centre pivot you just release the top handle and pull down? You use the bottom handle and push up for the top hung. Is that what you're doing?

Thanks for a really great tutorial on how to fit a velux window, I have a question, my window is 780mm x 980mm the rafters are spaced at 400mm centres, do I have to cut out 2 rafters? If so this means I would be more than 60mm margin as you mentioned.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
You have to replace the cut rafters with another rafter at the right spacing to maintain the strength. When you strengthen the opening with horizontal timbers top and bottom you can then place a 'rafter between the horizontals at the opening you require to create your frame. Hope that helps. Best of luck.

Thanks for your video, very good explanations.Got a question for you please.Bought off eBay to new VELUX windows but got the slate flashing.Can I make it work for concrete tiles ? What's the difference?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
It probably depends on your concrete tiles. If they're flat then maybe as the soakers will work. If they're shaped, then you may need the flexible flashing kit. Best to check on the velux website. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 👍

Hi Pouse, great video as always. I'm in the middle of my loft extension and about to install the velux. I am unable to get the vertical trimmings from gable to roofline due to the position of the purlins and collar. Do you think it will be sufficient to do the verticals from collar to roofline? Thanks in advance.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly couldn't say really as it depends on size of window, span of your rafters etc, but on a small window, if you brace a horizontal trimmer from one rafter to the next, then put a shorter timber vertically between the trimmers, that will probably work. When you say gable to roofline, i'm not entirely sure what you mean sorry.

No advice really as I've only ever fitted new. But I would definitely do the extra bit's of roof membrane around the window as I did. I haven't had so much as a weep in my 3 windows in all sorts of terrible weather, and I had all the windows exposed on the inside through several storms while doing the loft, and I really didn't see a drop of damp around them. Now years later, still good. Best of luck 👍

Hi there, great video. Thanks for uploading Just wanted to ask. I have a really old loft windows that needs replacing. The gap for the window from inside is 61cm x 96cm. Velux doesn't have the exact size . Is it better to get a smaller size Velux windows like CK04 = 55cmx98cm or CK02 = 55cm x 78cm or bigger one like FK04 = 66 x 98cm. Any advise would be very much appreciated thanks.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Жыл бұрын
Probably too late now sorry! But either is fine. Smaller window will require timbers adding to fill the gap, and some additional roof membrane and batten to cover the new gap but a larger will need some timbers cut out and strengthened. So pros and cons to both but the larger will give you more light. Hope that helps 👍

Thank you for the video, put a velux in 20 years ago, this one is going on our roof , rosemary tiles no membrane 1925 house . Would you advocate running a metre around the window . Great upload 👍👍 From a dull plumber
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, not sure what you mean, a metre of what, roof membrane? My understanding is that the flashing kit should work on it's own but I guess you could run a bit of membrane around it as I dis just to stop high winds pushing any water through. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

I just insulated my roof with pir board and cut down to size to fit between window and rafters as per rest of roof. Look at my loft conversion playlist on my channel and watch insulating between rafters video. The roof is a mix of old and new. Hope that helps.

My loft has an RSJ running along the middle on each side of the slope. Am I stuffed for adding a window? Every video I see just had direct access to rafters and doesn't show getting around the RSJs. Thanks!
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
As long as your window is going above or below the RSJ (or possibly just your purlins if timber) and the space is big enough for you window then it's fine. You still need to double up you rafters on each side and double your timbers top and bottom if it's a big window. Hope that helps.

What’s the j bar for that goes above the window across rafters?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 9 ай бұрын
The 2x4s are for structural support to spread weight on the rafters, and the battens lift the window frame to the correct height for the flashing as per the instructions.

Super video mate! We have a composite slate too, are these easy to fit into an existing roof? Cheers
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
No different to this really, the only difficulty is getting on roof at start and getting first few slates out. You need to remove them from top down which will expose slates below to free them using a slate ripper and hammer. Prob best to buy a pack of new slates before you start as you will definitely crack a few. They're only about 80p each. But once you have a hole big enough to stick your body through, you can cut the felt and do the rest from inside as you saw me do. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and best of luck with it.

Thanks mate, just watched your slate replacement video and put a ripper in my basket. Must replace headers above our rear windows first so hopefully do the window before taking scaff down. Weather still crap here near Swansea so won't be at it for couple months. Thanks again!

I have the top and bottom plaster ingoes dropping down vertical at the bottom and horizontal at the top. So your bridle should be set further down and further up to help air circulation. And give more headroom and more manoeuvring space at the bottom. Just a small detail..
