I just want to say a big thank you! I was very skeptical about the fact that an hard disk open in a "normal" environment could continue to work properly. Hard disk repair experts are rather insistent in saying that if anyone opens an hard drive in a non-protected atmosphere, the damage would be irreparable. Instead I saw the video and decided to try. Within minutes I recovered 1TB of material from an hard drive that I thought was irreparable. 1TB of my wife's data, so yes, you saved my life :D no matter how important data really was!

I was under the impression that opening up a HDD without a clean room was certain doom but I had nothing to lose so I gave it a try. I have a Samsung HDD that I use purely for music and storage. I put my music on a flash drive and have it hooked up to my router USB and stream all my music from the flash drive. If you play a lot of music don't put it on the hard drive, the hard drives seeks too many times for music. There are no moving Parts with a flash drive compared to a hard drive

Wife knocked a WD Passport disk to the floor mid backup after I'd archived a load of stuff to it. This has worked for me and allowed me to mount it again to get the data back. Life saver!! Thank you dude so much.

Just a quick tip: if you are really worried about dust, or are in such a dusty area that you feel it might be a serious issue, one way to minimize dust is to first run a hot shower with the door to the bathroom closed, until the room is rather steamy. Turn off the shower and then wait until the air clears of steam. Then use that room to disassemble the drive. The water particles in the steam from the shower accumulate around dust and hair particles floating in the air until they are too heavy to remain suspended, at which point they fall out of the air. While this will not get you a 100% clean room, it will greatly reduce dust in the air, and thus dust that can accumulate on your platter.

This worked for me too after I dropped my portable hard drive, it was making 3 soft clicking sounds. I opened it up, reset the heads and was able to recover most of the data and also reformat the drive. Amazingly, even though it fell from the desk to the floor, there was no visible damage to the platter like in your other video. Thanks!

I used this method on an 1.5TB Seagate drive. that was beeping constantly and causing the computer to hang all the time. The primary hard drive in an SSD thank goodness. But all my music, games and movie were on the Seagate drive. I popped the top off and gently moved the heads back and forward a few times. and screwed it back together. Once I powered it up windows with the drive re-installed it was detecting errors on the hard drive it ran the repair utility. And was fine after that no more beeping and I could read for it. However I do not know if I have caused damaged I have not tried writing to the hard drive the damage could be in a unpopulated part of the drive. I only recommend this method if you have nothing to lose, if the hard drive is old or out of warranty otherwise send the thing back. To most people the data on the hard drive is worth more then the drive its self. You should get a new had drive as soon as possible and transfer all the data off it while it still works.

Thank you for posting this video. My son dropped my wd passport ultra 2tb hdd and it stopped working. I had my hubby buy the T6 torx screwdriver from home depot, unscrewed the hdd, and sure enough the head was stuck. I twisted the platter counter clock wise slowly while moving the arm slowly off the platter, put the hdd back together and it's working beautifully now.

Thanks for the help! You saved my external HDD! I'd like to point out I had no Torx in the right size (I believe I needed a T8 or T6, but only had T10+), so I used a 1.8mm flat screwdriver (you can get those on the larger hardware stores, if you're stuck where electronic repair shops are closed or far away), in one of the little watchmaker screwdriver sets, I used a plier to hold it firmly enough and to be able to rotate it, because my hands and grip were not enough. If someone comes across a similar problem, this might help!

Abraham you saved my tail. An editing client's hard drive failed with a week's worth of (expensive) footage on it. I saw your video, offered to fix it for them and they gave me the go ahead. Inside it looked exactly as you demonstrated. I moved the head back the start position and it worked flawlessly. Currently backing up the footage now. This is the report that a technician gave me after he "inspected" the drive. Report: We have finished examining all physical and logical components of your storage media. Based on your situation we have determined that your media has sustained physical damage. The main cause of damage is that the storage media does not spin up due to a malfunction in the engine. For the recovery process we need to replace the whole engine unit and read write unit. After the engine transplant we will need re install the read write unit and recalibrate the heads. When the storage media spins up we need to read out all data on a sector level and reconstruct the complete file system. Afterwards we will mount the data onto an offline server in order to check the integrity of your data(partitions, directories and the different file types). The repairs will need to take place in a clean room environment. Technicians Notes: Motor is wedged, heads not in parking position, no other visible damage inside, need to explant disks and possibly heads,

I know this video is old, but every time I see a Hard drive with this problem it is a Seagate. I have some Seagate Hybrid Hard drives and I have some WD Velocity Raptor HDD's. I have had no trouble with the Raptor's, but one of my Seagate drives went bad and it was only 6 months old. I will never buy a Seagate drive again.

I hate to think Seagate HDD's are all bad. I know that some have really good luck with them just not me. I have had good luck with Maxtor and WD hard drives. They will all fail eventually, but to fail out of the box doesn't give me much confidence in their product.

Certain Seagate drives seem to be highly rated and built to last while other models are absolute junk. The drive in my XPS 400 (2005) served for 11 years before being replaced with an SSD. It still works and I use it as backup storage.

Very nice it worked for me!! Had a little trouble finding the hidden screw on my 2,5" HDD but yep it was stuck. Moved it back in parking mode and I am copying data from it to my external HDD at this very moment.

I can't believe that worked. I wouldn't do it on anything I cared about or had a warranty. I'll admit, it is better than how I do it. usually involves a 12ga and any random target load "ringed" or "cut" lol.

Just done mine, clicking like mad two drives in Raid "0" This was WD high speed VelociRaptor raid 0 set, so i opened both drives and found both heads in each drive about half way across, moved them back to the stops as i rotated the disk. put them back in to the PC booted it and both drives showed up as the raid 0 set, in disk manager both drives had yellow triangles and " at risk" labels, so i coped 103 GB onto a SSD and then in disk management carried out hard drive repair to one of the raid drives this makes windows repair both raid drives together, Faults where found but corrected by windows as in the file below. i am going to carry on running the raid 0 drives as all the data is now on an SSD anyway. I have a Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB (2.5) that was working perfectly until yesterday, just when the computer froze while I was about to transfer a file. I gave no importance and shut it off manually, however when the computer restarted it wasn't able to detect the drive. I unplugged it and when I plugged it again I noticed the drive was beeping (fast and short) for about 10 seconds and then the led just kept blinking, I couldn't hear the drive spinning or any other noise (no clicking). I plugged it and unplugged it several times, switched cables, switched ports, remove the usb interface and connected directly to SATA ports... The result was always the same: short and fast beeping followed by the blinking led and no signs of activity. Then I decided to follow this tutorial, it wasn't so hard to "peel" the drive enclosure to gain access to the drive, I removed all screws and THERE IT WAS! the head over the platter, I carefully moved the head as you indicated, rotating the disc counter-clockwise to reduce the stress of the head, pulling it from the outermost hole to prevent damaging it. When I finished I noticed a pair of insignificant dust particles over the platter but I decided to let them there, I assumed the centrifugal force was going to get rid of them and perhaps blowing them or trying to remove them will potentially inflict irreparable damage to the drive. After that, I connected the drive and BOOM! The drive got recognized immediatly and all my info was there, I even ran HD Tune and no sectors were shown damaged! Man I was scared to the death of losing all my information, you saved me. I encourage anyone who has this problem and has exhausted all other possibilities to give it a try, it's not hard at all, just be patient and do things very carefully.
