My heater fan was making a terrible hum after having the windscreen replaced. Volvo dealership wanted to sell me a new fan motor, which requires stripping the whole dashboard. I followed your instructions to access the fan, removed a piece of foam rubber (dropped by the windscreen fitrer). Problem solved. THANK YOU for this video.

I haven't had my XC 60 for long. I bought it used. When I first heard that noise, I knew it was a dry bearing of some sort, and I was concerned it was coming from a major element in the engine. Through trial and error, I determined that by turning off the HVAC fan, the squeaking would stop. I saw YT videos for a complete replacement of that blower and motor assembly, which would also require a dedicated Volvo tool. I have the requisite skills, because I do most repairs and maintenance on my cars. Most recently, I replaced a heater core on a VW Passat, and that was no picnic. Additionally, it's winter time here, so I would have had to wait until late Spring if I wanted to pursue that under dash adventure, even if I were to remove the fan motor to lubricate what sounds like a brass bearing. Why don't the Volvo engineers do their job properly and specify a weather proof motor assembly? These cars aren't inexpensive, and Sweden is on, or near the Arctic Circle, unless it's been relocated recently 😂.

you rock. did this on my 2012 S60 and 2012 XC60 and stopped that annoying sound. Did use WD40 and used couple of plastic straws -- was able to just get it into the bearing location. This is so easy compared to dashboard removal.

Thank you sir. Just did this on my 2011 V60 (right hand drive - so the fan was facing the other way). The one wiper was in the way when I removed the plastic cover beneath the windscreen, so I had to put the wipers in "service" mode - just hold the wiper stalk up after switching off the ignition and they move to the up position. I used Q20 (a lubricant and cleaning spray we use in South Africa - similar to WD40), and I attached a bendy drinking straw to the existing spray pipe with some sticky tape, to get the necessary length (and so I could direct the spray accurately with the bendy straw bit). I had to spray a few times and there's a definite improvement. It still squeaks a bit around halfway, but then it quietens down - maybe I need to run it for a few days to let the Q20 work in properly. Thanks for the excellent tip!

Thanks for a great video. Dealer quoted $1800 (2023). One of the poorest designs in automotive history. It should have been removable from the engine compartment. I thought about doing what you've done but hadn't searched for the access which you found. I'm not sure what I want for a lube yet but may use CLP, for guns. It cleans and lubes and has some teflon suspended in it. May last a lot longer.

Here's an alternate idea. The end of the shaft is under the "bell" shape of the squirrel cage. I may drill a small hole through the white plastic, estimating the bearing location, then just give it a shot with straight tubing. I'd put a small plastic hole plug (like 1/4") in the hole and may repeat 180 degrees away for balance. Probably not needed since the hole removed some plastic and the plug added some.

I would try it, remove the rubber molding at the back of the engine compartment and lift up the plastic panel, the one that covers the brake fluid reservoir . Make sure you turn off recirculation (Key on engine running) and put the vent to outside air then turn off the key. This way the outside air door will be open. I'm sure this will work out for you! good luck

Great tip & video! Worked also on my 2008 V70. I didn’t have the long tubing, so I used a small brush with long handle to oil the shaft. Dipped the brush several times in grease to soak the hairs and than applied it on the shaft with the fan running. The rattle/squeak is almost gone now. Maybe I’ll repeat it again to solve it complete. I used lithium spray, maybe normal WD40 would have been better?

Awesome glad it worked out- Any kind of oil will work! In my case it lasts about 2-3 years and I simply repeat again.
@eddy6-pack7 ай бұрын
@@GregQuirin I watched the video again and now realize that I didn’t lubricate the baring behind/in the fan, only the little peace of the metal rod. Maybe that’s why it still squeaks a little bit. Maybe have to do it one more time but now with spray and long straw. Fortunately it’s an easy DIY fix!👍🏻

Great video, Just a heads up, don’t make the two mistakes i made, using too much spray, and using WD40, as this has stuffed up the fan, and although it’s quiet, it now doesn’t run at top speed. Hopefully it’ll come right.

Nice work! I would say your bearing is probably very worn. Try a heavy oil maybe motor oil and try filling the WD40 straw with oil and use the WD40 can to push the oil into the bearing? other oils to consider is air tool oil, transmission fluid? you just need a way to fill the tiny straw or maybe try using a hand pump old school oil can? they sell them at Harbor freight good luck! Excelent tip. However, I have no idea where the exterior bearing is and it is not clear where are you aiming. Is it safe to randomly oil the adjacent parts?
@GregQuirin3 жыл бұрын
Look up the blower fan online and study the photos so you can get a good reference. Try to aim the oil onto the shaft behind the plastic squire cage/fan so it will work its way into the bearing. you will be inserting the straw inline with the shaft then aim it downwards at the bearing maybe 1/2 -3/4"inch past the plastic fan blades 2-4 sprays max then turn on the fan and see if it is better. I dont think there is any thing to damage. Worse case is it may smell like wd40 if you spray too much for a couple days. Good luck, I'm sure it will work out for you! I have done this at least 3 or 4 times know on various Volvos - all successful!
