Thanks so much for doing this video! I got a big chip on a red truck I owned a day and the body shop wanted $1,600 to fix. I appreciate you volunteering your Corvette for this tutorial.

It can be scary, but smoothing out the area with some high grit sandpaper, then using multiple layers, and finally compounding the area will result in something that looks almost perfect. It's kind of like fixing a hole in drywall, where you might have to cut away more before you can patch it perfectly.

Your methods are good, the only thing I seen a problem with is you keep brushing. Once you apply a coat just spread the thickest part of the "drop" of paint out and then let it dry. It should mostly self level. This paint dries fast so going back over previous areas will tear the surface skin of paint because that's what dries first. Just something to keep in mind. Great video

I used the same pen on my mosaic black 17 2ss camaro, the spots that are touched up are still noticeable bc theyre raised, i think this time im gonna try sanding it a tiny bit too to flatten it
@deronjohnson58994 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mentioned in another comment that I didn’t attempt to do any sanding because 1 this was my first time doing it, and two, it was such a small spot. BUT I’m releasing a NEW video covering buffing/polishing. My baby got a scratch on the bumper, so I’m going to do a video on that and the spot I touched up. It’ll be my first time so, again, these videos are for the common man 😂

Complete your touch up with a small 1 inch block (i suggest a small sponge kept wet and wrap sand paper around it) and 2k grit wet sand paper to level it out. Be sure to lightly sand just to level then compound it using a da buffer

Great video! One question is(unless I missed it)what's the white tip used for? Tried a very little spot on a chip and it's very abrasive.
@AzalofForossa3 жыл бұрын
It's to remove rust if you let a chip remain for too long, paint won't adhere to rust so you'll need to scratch off the rust to show bare metal. If you catch a chip within weeks of it happening you'll have no use for it really.

Nice Vid on your beautiful ride Deron, You might have been better off doing it out of the sun, in a shady spot or in the garage with good lighting. If your alcohol prep is drying too fast, it's too hot... When you get to the clearcoat, you might consider doing that in a couple stages as well. I started to cringe a bit when you put the clear on and kept brushing it to even it out, seeing as the clear dries up very quickly. When it starts to harden you'll start to see brush strokes because the solvent in the clear on the applicator is smudging the hardening clearcoat on the surface.Otherwise, nice touch, lots of folks just blob it on and call it a day. ;;
@deronjohnson58994 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice and yeah I’d dried really quick! I’ll definitely keep that in mind next time (even though I hope there isn’t a next time) when I put the clear coat on. But she’s definitely a garage queen! Haha!

keep the paper towel out of the touch up paint or clear coat. you can build it high with clear and polish it down with some ultra fine compound.
@pkincy4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. A Question. Shouldn't you apply the base coat til it is a bit above the level of the surrounding paint and then take it down with very fine sandpaper or rubbing compound to smooth it out before applying the clear coat?
@deronjohnson58994 жыл бұрын
Short answer, yes, but with it being such a small chip, I didn’t want to risk damage to the surrounding paint. Again, I’m not a professional haha

i'm holding this touchup pen that I just purchased from Chevrolet and was quaking in my boots about applying it to my Camaro. You're doing gods work man. Made total sense once I could see it, especially the lessons you learned along the way. i'm wondering if the final coat of paint (was it the third or maybe the fifth coat on your vehicle?) should instead be the clearcoat pen, to bring it to flush. I'm reticent to share that question though because frankly you nailed it. going to head into my garage now and do it. I'll follow up with an edit/outcome.

For this reason I think it's worth installing a "clear bra" (i.e., clear rock chip film) as it's nearly impossible to keep the front of a vehicle rock chip free unless you don't drive it.

That touch-up job isn't perfect but it gets the job done. A couple hundred bucks to repaint the whole hood? The tax alone would cost a couple hundred bucks. Then after repainting the hood, you could end up getting another paint chip on it. I just got a paint pen for my 2007 Impala and it will be good enough for the 4-inch long scratch on the trunk. It will be good enough compared to what it looks like now.

Why in the world wouldn't you have positioned the camera so the viewer can see the paint pen doing the job? Your hand was in the way. @@safesax2002 Thanks for letting me know. I have already used this on my car and I am satisfied. I had a chip a tiny bit larger than a quarter, and filled it in with this stuff. Its not perfect of course, being that large, you can still tell what was done when standing next to the car, but its an older car anyway and I am not looking for perfection. It still looks much better than it did. And it seems to be holding up as it has been many months ago I used it. Thanks
