How to Fix a Poor Reference Photo for Portrait Commissions

As a custom portrait artist, I know all too well how important a good reference photo is. The quality of a reference photo really can dictate the outcome of a painting. In the end, it really depends on your comfort level and experience whether you'll want to take on a custom portrait when the reference photo may be fuzzy, discolored or too dark, but there are a few things you can do to hopefully save the reference photo and do a great job on a portrait for your customer. Here are a few of my favorite ways that I use Photoshop to fix a reference photo.
