What You Need:
- Damaged, scratched, or unreadable disc.
- White Stick Deodorant
- Toothpaste (without beads or other abrasives)
What You Need to Do:
- Wet Disc
- Apply Toothpaste from inside out using finger
- Allow to dry on disc for 8-10 minutes
- Rinse and dry disc
- Apply White Stick deodorant from inside out using finger
- Allow to dry on disc for 8-10 minutes
- Rinse and dry disc
I've found a majority of the time the unreadable disc error on an Xbox 360 is indeed due to a scratch or abrasion on a disc that is too deep for the laser to read. This will help fill in the scratches on the disc and allow the laser to continuously read and process the disc. This is the best how-to for fixing a damaged, scratched, or otherwise unreadable disc for your Xbox, Playstation, or other gaming console.
Let me know how this worked for you! I had a FIFA 97 disc that never worked until I tried this method!

Amen. This works, regardless of the game, depending on the condition of your disc. If you have a giant "F You" scratch down the middle of your Black Ops 2 (just basing this on evidence collected here), nothing will bring your game back. If you put it on top of a table and the disc picked up a few surface scratches from the left over Pop-Tart crumbs, there's a good chance a good ol' tube of Crest will bring your game back to life.

It worked on my old copy of Battlefront 2. I repaired it 4 years ago, using this method. Thanks a lot, mate, the only problem was that sometimes cutscenes skip around, but that’s just due to the scratches removing game data that were originally there when it shipped. Quick five step fix with tooth paste: 1. Put toothpaste on disc 2. Let it sit for 10 minutes 3. Rinse with water 4. Wipe off with microfiber or soft towel 5. Enjoy your game! This really works, I fixed my GTA 5 with it.

Just tried this today. 1) rinse the disk with water. 2)apply toothpaste in an inside out motion until it’s completely covered and let it dry for 5-10 minutes. 3) rinse the disk off in an inside out motion (should take about 1 minute) then pat dry with a terry cloth. It actually worked! I skipped the deodorant part.

I’ve done this method in the past. If the disc is really fucked up(like whole disc is riddled with scratches or scratches are very deep) then this method most likely won’t work (still worth a shot tho) and you’re gonna have throw the disc away. It worked before with one of my discs that had quite a bit of scratches but the scratches weren’t too deep. I actually did it with Vaseline. Also you may not even have to do the double coat like he did in the video with the deodorant.

Just tried this on my ps2 copy of nfs carbon in which was freezing on the cutscene telling you that you just beat the final character. It looks better scratch wise. I’m gonna let it sit for a little longer then test time. If it works you’ve earned a sub. I really hope it works! Edit 1: game is already loading way faster, and is having higher FPS. 1. Put disk under water. Use your finger and swipe from the middle to out 2. Apply toothpaste and use same finger motions 3. Let it sit until the toothpaste hardens 4. Rinse the disk, use same finger motion 5. Wipe with soft cloth 6. See if the game works 7. If doesn’t, put non gel deodorant on it, middle to out. 8. Rinse it 9. Wipe with a soft cloth 10. Unfortunately, it's not a permanent fix. You can try it again and it might work a little bit better a second or third time. Plastic polish (see description for link) has worked for me but again, I would only recommend it as a last resort. The goal is to get the console to read the licensing portion of the disc so you can 'download it' and play it 'without a disc' (even though you still need the disc in for the licensing). Again, this may have changed on the newer consoles but this is the way it was with the Xbox 360 years ago. Check out the Mercari app for cheap video games (in case you can't fix it). I've been able to find most of what I want from a collecting perspective for relatively cheap. Actually just purchased a bunch of stuff for some new content :) There's a link where you can get some free $$ for signing up in my description!

I began to do this and I thought: "No, this will not work. I am really gonna miss this game ;(" . My toothpaste had small dots and I was about to give up. I did some circular motions too. I started to think: "where can I throw this disc?" but... I dried it with my t-shirt and there were still visible scratches. I set the disc in the old ps2. And it turned on, but made weird sounds. But it worked! It didn't crash anymore (GTA3) and I was so glad about it. TRY THIS, SCEPTICAL PEOPLE.

Toothpaste is water soluble so pretty sure any hardened toothpaste would dissolve when you wash it. Toothpaste has tiny abrasive particles which is why it is useful here as to round the edges of the scratches which reduces the amount of lazer refraction I think
