Do you REALLY have a short leg that needs a heel lift or is it just muscle imbalances of the quadratus lumborum? The first thing I like to find out is whether the "short leg" is functional or structural. Watch the video to learn more about trigger point work and stretching of the quadratus lumborum. Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks for watching!

Thanks so much. I’ve gotten different opinions on this. I definitely have right hip tightness and tenderness on my back under my rib. I was told that my leg is not anatomically shorter but was still told to wear the lift. I’m going to experiment and see how I feel. It’s tricky. Thanks again! Grateful for all these videos. ❤

I had a torn Achilles which healed but reduced my flexibility on that side. I now have a tight QL. As I listened to your video about it tilting my hip higher, I realized that this contributes to my glut tendonitis when I run long distance. Wouldn't that tighten the glut tendon on that side? Thanks for the video. Great work.

Is scoliosis a strucrural problem and what do you recommend for that?
@clublulu399
@clublulu399 14 күн бұрын
I’m surprised you didn’t go into mentioning why the QL becomes tight in the first place, and that’s because it’s compensating to provide stability that another muscle should be doing instead: the gluteus medius. If the glutes are working like they should, then the QL is relaxed and doesn’t work extra hard. Sure releasing the trigger points will work, but that’s merely putting a bandaid on because the root cause hasn’t been tackled: weakness in glutes. So, yes, a heel lift is not needed, but more importantly, strengthening of the glute medius is required to get rid of the problem forever. Some great exercises include Banded Monster Walks, Single Touchdown Squats, or even something as simple as Hip Hikes. Any one of these exercises gets at tackling the root of the issue.

Hello there 7 months ago i injured my knee in gym i was working on upper leg machine, my knee was injured and i couldn't bend it for almost two weeks, after that I've been dealing with lower back pain on right side and now recently on left side(right side which is the side of the injured knee is much better now) and recently I've been having knee pain, my knee bones make voices (I've been told i have chondromalacia patella, and that has caused me unequal leg length) I've been told to do the pnf stretching and other kinds of stretching, but soon after an hour i can feel the pain again and soon after i have to do the stretchings again, I'm so desperate, i would look forward for your advice, thanks

Something chiropractors need to be aware of but do not get training for in school is not hip dysplasia is one of the most common reasons for short leg syndrome. I have been through so much trying to find relief for my hip on my longer leg and no answers. But at least I know what caused my short leg. It is because I have a hip dysplasia in that leg that I was born with. So please do add this to your list of reasons why this can happen. Because I worked for a chiropractor analyzed my x-rays and still had no clue that it was a hip dysplasia. I had to go to an orthopedic specialist and spend over $400 just for the diagnosis. And all they could tell me was to go to physical therapy. Anyways I still have a lot of SI joint pain and the hip of the longer leg and The sensation of it pulling out of socket when I am going on longer walks. I've had to forget about the hope of ever being able to run for jog.

So i have lumbar scoliosis, which the spine surgeon doc, based on x-rays, said was caused by a congenital leg length discrepancy. News to me! So, pretty obvious pelvis tilt, and as far as heel inserts go, which i might give a try to see how it feels, i just have one question: do you think a heel lift should be worn inside as well as outside? Otherwise the intrinsic forces of the body will be significantly different inside vs outside.

I have something strange going on that no practitioner has been able to help with. My hip is high on the right side. I have had some correction with chiropractic adjustment. Something that no one can explain is this.....if I do a wide leg forward bend my right leg does not seem to move in the socket like the left. My right side hikes up and my torso moves left. Not sure this makes any sense? I am about to turn 60 and have been able to run and cycle with no real pain. I would just like to correct this now that I have noticed it

My physical therapist and foot dr told me my right leg was off by a little so they told me to only wear one heel lift. Well a year down the road after losing 50lbs, I started working with a trainer to build strength and working on stretching/mobility. I’ve found out that the heel lift made it worse causing my back pain to come back because my leg difference was minimal and could of been fixed by stretching. This does work indeed

Osgood Schlatters would not be considered structural. For example, structural would be a break affecting the growth plate . I would check the QL for an imbalance.

I have a heel lift because of pain when I was walking for fitness. An osteopath suggested the heel lift. Later a chiropractor said my right hip was rotated forward. Is this the reason for my leg length discrepancy? Can this be helped? I'd love to get rid of the heel lift. It makes it very hard to find sandals and dress shoes and I often have to tape it on the sole of my shoe when the footbed is not removable.

Just came across your video to which I can relate. I am dealing with the same problem. My left knee has came front as compared to normal due to which my body posture has been changed. I have pain all over my body due to my uneven body posture. I have been doing physiotherapy but it’s not working. My leg has sort of become like an elastic, when stretched it ok but after leaving the leg it again comes front. My leg do look short but it’s due to my uneven posture, when compared my both legs are of equal size. Can you suggest any exercises for me?
@clublulu399
@clublulu399 14 күн бұрын
The reason the QL is tight and hiking the hip up is because it’s providing “extra” stability to the pelvis. This extra stability is a compensation due to another muscle that’s weak: the gluteus medius. If the glute does its job providing stability to the pelvis, then the QL relaxes. Some great exercises to work on are banded monster walks, single touchdown squats, or hip hikes. This will strengthen the glutes and over time you’ll notice the QL relax. I’ve had this exact problem and fixed it by doing those exact exercises. Best of luck.

Hi Ed, I’ve been having horrible ql pain for months now. Now on imaging it shows some levo scoliosis. Never had that before now. I know the ql attaches to the 12th rib and if dysfunctional it can pull the rib down, screw with the rib cage, cause sij pain. I do not have a structural deformity/shortness. I’ve been told the only way you can really tell is by x-ray. My legs have been measured and they are equal .. My question, this is all on my left side. My right side pain free, higher hip and everything is tight and leg feels shorter. Mostly , everyone says if you have a hip hike than that is the tight side that needs stretched, and the other side need strengthened. So in my case, should I stretch my right side, the higher hip side, the no pain side, and then strengthen the left painful ql side? It’s very confusing because most of the time people have pain with a higher hip, I don’t. This is just ruining my life because it’s pulling on that rib cage in that spot you speak of. It is extremely tender there on the left. Thank you in advance if you reply.
@lw7654
@lw7654 Жыл бұрын
P.s…. I also forgot to mention, which you already know that if your QL is dysfunctional/weak you can also pull your vertebrae out of alignment, and that might be whats causing my scoliosis.

I had Perthes as a child and recently had a hip replacement on my left side, ( I’m 50 ). My right leg is now over an inch shorter. Do hip replacements usually require lifts on the opposite side, or is it maybe a tilted pelvis on that side that I’ve had over the years that needs correcting? My legs always seemed even to me before the surgery, so I’m confused.

I’m 42 and I have had five back surgeries in my first child two years ago. I’ve been trying to lose the last 10-15 pounds by walking a mile a day and just for the last two weeks I’ve noticed my calves, Buttocks and shin muscles getting tighter and more tender and especially when I wake up they are extremely painful. Ive been stretching, heat, ice and massaging the muscle fibers but nothing is changing. If anything, it’s only getting more uncomfortable. I wear a lift in my shoe and a knee brace bc of the difference between legs. I wear it on and off for weeks and it didn’t change anything. I also have scoliosis. Would the tightness and cramping feeling in my buttocks be the cause of the burning pain or is it sciatica or SI joint pain? I don’t believe Chiropractors can do much with fusion patients right? What do you advise? physical therapy, manipulation, massage, radio frequency ablation or is it possible to check the biomechanics first? Who do I need to see first?

My Ortophed measured my legs simply by checking something around my hips on my back side. I think this measurament was incorrect because she said my left leg is longer by 0.5cm. But I actually can feel it's my right leg that is longer, and my pain goes away when I put a heel lift in my left shoe. While if I put it in my right shoe, my pain gets even worse. I had an ACL reconstruction surgery 5 years ago on my left knee, i definitely was more weight bearing on my right during recovery, which i feel has created some imbalances in my hips. I don't recall any structural issues in my youth. Looking at my SI joint dimples on my back my left is higher than my right. So my hips have a lateral tilt sloping to the right making my right leg is the shorter one. I would have thought my right side would be the problem side but my left QL is tight tighter of the two. Why would my tighter side be the side with more length? I'm confused

Muscles are like contracting elastics . If you stretch an elastic to its limit, what happens? The elastic become tense. That's what people often think is there muscle being tight. When in reality its overstretched by the anatomical position but it is indeed tense. Stretching would only make things worse.

Ashley, I've been a chiropractor for 35 years and will have a go at answering your Questions. I don't need your business, but I just wanted to help. The theory goes that contracting the muscle on one side will lift your pelvis on that side. Is this possible? I will answer this question from a standing and lying down position. The QL is a muscle that causes side bending to the same side in the upright position. (The left QL bends you to the left ) In the lying down (recumbent) position, a tighter QL causes the hip to hike and induces an 'apparent' shorter leg. The leg becomes shorter on the side of the tighter QL side. Take home point, and in summary: Your left long leg in the standing position will become your Left SHORT leg in the lying down position. Don't measure leg length when lying down. This is often the case. I have a left short leg when standing and a right short leg when lying down.

MRI shows I hip labrum tear, degeneration in the hip, but all the orthropedic doctor i saw refused to do operation. I have seen physio, personal trainer for 3 years...very little improvement. I was told however, that i have collapsed (high) arch on the left as well. I felt weakness for my toes on my left feet to grasp the floor because the leg muscles are very tight.... I have done many exercises and could not improve much, every step causes strain and pain of the muscles in the groin and hip...I have got a customer made insole 2 days ago......the tech told me i have short leg, I think it is due to QL spasm on my left QL.......he put a heel lift on my RIGHT insole. It feels so awkward on the right side..... it is now day 3, I feel sore on the QL of my right side, the left side feels a little less tight.......I agree with what you said about buiding strength, but in my case, the muscles are too tight every where, the insole seems like a short cut....and give me some breathing space.....may be it is too early to tell......

If you have a labrum tear in your hip please seek a second opinion 😢 I just had surgery for a hip labral tear only a month ago. I was also having a lot of pain in my QL above my bad hip, as well as a ton of pain in my foot on my "good side". It is a nightmare to deal with and only gets worse over time because a labrum cannot repair itself. And if you also have bone deformity in your femur, where it rests in your hip socket, the bone will continue to irritate the cartilage (labrum) literally every time you move. So it will get worse with time, and in fact cause arthritis. I have heard that if there is advanced arthritis, a lot of surgeons won't do the arthroscopic hip surgery, due to the weakness of the bone. So it's quite possible that's why they refused you? Has anyone suggested a full hip replacement surgery to you? I imagine that's probably the next step 😥 I hope this has resolved for you since you posted your comment. I wish you the best!

@@billyhamlen9610 As someone with chronic myofascial pain, I high recommend you get yourself a tennis ball and start using it for self massage. I have also had numbness and tingling in my fingertips. Low and behold when I started getting serious about using the tennis ball on my shoulders, neck, upper arms and forearms, every day, I was able to get the numbness to go away after just a few weeks! It's one of the cheapest remedies out there and it certainly doesn't hurt to try!

I do appreciate this. My left QL has been tight since high school 08-11. I’ve been use racquetball trying to release it. Feels like my left acl rehab 2019-2020 exacerbated it tho and my right side and hip are even more weak and imbalanced now. Struggle is real and getting help feels like a luxury I can’t afford.

By using a heel, made with computer assistance of course, they have achieved that my spine to curve and even worse, I got twisted pelvis and unable to come to myself these two years. Muscle memory is something unbelievable. But the damage was done by those damn heels : lifted the wrong foot. People! Be careful what you do. It can cost you a lot

Was just given a heel lift today. My Chiropractor for the last year never mentioned it.... Two appointments in with new chiro and I'm wearing it as of today... I'd like another opinion as it feels like a rushed assessment. I'm also from Washington.

Hey Mathew, ask the chiro if it could be because your QL is tight on one side first. Also, how does it feel with the heel lift, is it helping?

@@FrontRowwithEd The area that led me to go in to get adjusted is still inflammed and hurting - So no I don't think it's helping, but it's hard to say if it's the lift agitating it or if I'm just not aligned yet. I called one of my Chiropractor buddies and he said friend to friend he wouldn't recommend a heel lift, so it's just conflicting information.

@@hydrodad4263 As you heard in the video, I tend to not like the heel lift unless there is an actual structural difference (old broken bone affecting the actual growth of the bone) Otherwise, it could be a muscle imbalance that needs to be addressed first before putting in the heel lift that can "lock the dysfunction" in place. And yes, can get confusing at times.

I’ve noticed my hips level out from switching to more minimalist shoes, but my legs still have a slight difference and some pain on the “longer side” I don’t if it just needs a slight more leveling out hoping that’s the case because I hate shoe lifts

I wish you were around 25 years ago. I had an accident and, once recovered, kept getting a tear in one calf. A podiatrist diagnosed one leg shorter than the other. I now know that whilst this was the case, it was an apparent not an actual short leg. Meaning I should have worked on a muscle imbalance rather than accept the heel lift he gave me. It caused more problems than not, because I was fixing the wrong thing. Nowadays I have hips that are rotated on one side forward and also upwards. Note to anyone wearing a heel lift: if you do have one leg that is structurally shorter than the other, the lift should actually be the same distance from heel to toe, NOT just the heel.

Same as mine. Chiropracter ordered shoe lift of .5 cm for my 1 cm leg length difference. I wore it for many years and it took care of my lower back pain. I also have mild left lateral scoliosis and left hip higher by 1 cm. I don't know if one causes the other. Swimming and cross country skiing are the best for loosening my back. I am now interested in barefoot shoes and finding a good insert for the right shoe.
