Raymarine/Tacktick Wireless Wind Anemometer Repair
Patrick Childress show how to do a battery replacement in your Raymarine or Tacktick wireless wind indicator. If your wind display on a Tacktick unit/Raymarine , wind speed shows just dashes, it usually indicates that there is no signal from the masthead wind indicator (T101). This indicates that a wind transmitter battery replacement is due. It may be that the solar charged battery at the top of the mast can no longer be charged. Replacing the rechargeable battery at the top of the mast often fixes this, and/or the battery inside of the display unit. This is strictly a How To Video that demonstrates the replacement of the battery in a Raymarine or Tacktick wireless anemometer/wind transmitter. Years ago, Raymarine bought Tacktick wireless instruments, as well as the wind anemometer.
After a while the batteries can not hold a charge and communication between the cockpit instruments and the masthead unit fails. Where do you find the battery for a Raymarine anemometer? How do you take apart the unit without breaking it??

Maybe I was Googling wrong, but this still seems to the only ‘how to’ video on YT for the T120 specifically, and very useful it is too. I only realise after watching it that it is now posthumous. Still a good resource !

Thanks, this vid was very helpful. Replacing the battery is more difficult than expected. In my experience, the tiny screws would spin but not come out. I could unscrew many times with no perceptible extraction, but screwing back in would get tight after one-half of a turn. I finally gave up and (eventually) figured out that the screws had very little bite anyway. After giving up on removing the screws, I started prying the case open with expectation of likely destroying it. The indentations provided for prying are deceiving. It looks like the prying screwdriver would be inserted from the outside, pointing inward toward the center. But the indentations only provide access to the very tight seam between the case and cover. So the small screwdriver tip must be forced into the crack between case and cover, with the tip pointing outward rather than inward. Lots of pressure is required to break into the seam because the case must be slightly deflected. Expect some minor damage to the case. When the cover finally started moving out of the case I was able to work the driver tip around the circumference, bit by bit, several times around, until the cover could be pulled from the case. Total time was about 60 minutes, but I could do it again in 10 mins. The replacement screws provided with the battery are slightly longer and got a better grip when the cover was replaced. It’s a tedious task, but in my case the project was a success.

Absolutely amazing how Patrick figured out how to do this. I had a terrible time separating the two halves, perhaps because three of the screws would not drop out. A T6 worked with mine, and the kit comes with a T6. Perhaps Patrick's reference to a T16 was in error? hope the battery swap saved me the price of a new anemometer, will know tomorrow when the sun comes out.

Was wondering ,do you think that heavy boats are more comfy while underway and less likely to swing back and forth .
@RVLifeNOW
@RVLifeNOW 5 жыл бұрын
I would think their heavy momentum would make for a better ride but the trade off is that they are slower and sit there to get pounded where a lighter boat will give more with the waves and get there faster. I will take the lighter and faster boat.

Sometimes the solar panel get a glass of lightning or other conductive spark. I wonder if the solar panel went bad? Test output of it, but I am afraid another disassembly…

Either the top unit got struck by lightning (they are the most suspect Ike thing on your boat I think to lightning activity) or the top unit needs battery replacement (see link below for link to it) or your bearing kit needs to be replaced in that top unit. take it down. if it’s spinning freely then it’s the battery. if it doesn’t spin freely then new kit from Raymarine to service those parts . Good luck :)

I think you misspoke in the Torx size. Could it be #6 instead of #16? #16 doesn't seem to exist and if it did, it would be more than 1/8 inch. I have a #6 that seems to fit but I don't have a #7 and to check as the #6 seems a bit lose.

Hello Patrick. Just watched this video as I have been shopping for a wireless wind instrument. Your maintenance video is very informative. I have read mixed reviews about wireless wind instruments in general, not pointing at any particular brands. How has the TackTick (now Rwymarine T101) worked for you? Reliable? Do you lose any transmissions from the masthead to the display? How tall is your mast? Is mast height an issue for the T101? I am having to replace an old Datamarine on our newly purchased 30 yr old sailboat. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

This is Rebecca...our Raymarine (used to be Tacktick) have been very good. But when the battery starts to go, you start getting issues...so have to be prepared to do what you see in the video after 5 or 7 years. Everything is a trade off I guess. Run the electrical lines for a wired unit if it’s not too painful... but if it is, use the wireless unit that you must replace batteries in every so often. We are quite happy with ours. Would never have run lines for wind, but am quite glad to have wind now. Our mast is about 54 feet from the waterline I think it is, and there is no issues with that height. I’m not sure what the threshold is... 75 foot mast may start to have issues. Also, there are times, under our hard dodger and canvas over the cockpit that the display units don’t get enough sun. We take the displays off the bulkhead and put them out in better sun for a few hours, and they are back on track, even in cloudy rainy conditions. I hope that helps. -Rebecca

Can’t go wrong with that...except if there is a problem with the line it’s a lot harder to troubleshoot when something does go wrong. But if it’s a Raymarine, support is great, and they are pretty darn robust anyways. Enjoy! And glad the video could help you decide. -Rebecca

Patrick, my Tacktick system is now and then losing wind information. The display freezes (or is at zero when it does not come up when turning the system on). The whole system is from 2009, so it would not be unusual for the battery to need replacement. You show that that is easy to do, but where do you get a battery assembly from?

Lucas, One thing I did not mention in the video is that when opening up the anemometer case, give the assemblage a counter clock wise twist, about 1/8” and it should be easier to get apart. I did not show that in the video. Likewise, on reassembly, line up the peg with the slot then twist together. I did not realize this till much later. Hope this helps. Rebecca is adding a link in another response for where to buy the battery packs. I have seen the same, soldered together, battery packs sold in specialized battery stores but the big question is if the tiny connector is exactly the same. So I think it is safer to buy them direct from Raymarine.

Hi Patrick, instead of using two screwdrivers to disconnect the battery, it's easier to use a small needle nose pliers. You then have one hand for the tool and one for the action.
