Hi Becky just so everyone knows Magnesium is what makes muscles relax & the heart relase & beat 'out', Calcium makes the muscles contract & supports their strength so they can tense & in the heart's case beat "IN", so Calcium & Magnesium are the two minerals that feed the muscle system so they can contract & release & relax, so consider having some CAL Mag on hand or a product called CALMS. This is fabulous information!!! I never knew the reason behind egg bound hens. I always have oyster shell in a pile in a special place inside the coop at all times because I don't want thin eggshells and the shells breaking inside the hen, eggs breaking inside the hens is often fatal. My hens are my pets too. They love flying up and sitting on my lap when I'm outside. I free range my girls, they love the extra bugs and hang out in the woods most the day.❤️

+Sydney Ashcraft You can also solve the problem by giving them back their egg shells crushed ... so after you eat the eggs or use them however, dry out the shells and than either grind them down down or throw them in a food processor. It will save you an expense of buying more things. Also you might want to learn about what chickens can actually eat it will surprise you. It certainly did me. I changed my chickens diet their eggs taste better an they seem happier an more eager when feeding time comes. I even vetted the diet with my own vet before hand.

This remedy could come in very handy around this rookie homestead. lol. Can't you just poke a clean, gloved finger or two up there, crack the shell, gently pull out the mess and keep soaking the bird so she can pass anything accidentally left behind in her, well, behind? I would think that more effective than just a bath and some pills. Thanks🌷

Always better to avoid the problem, feed crushed oyster shells at all times. Hens need a lot of calcium for the muscles to contract to push the egg down the track, create a strong shell and lay a great egg.☀️❤️☀️

Egg-bound is a symptom of poor diet in chickens. If it happens frequently it means your chickens are not getting a balanced diet with enough vitamins.

This just happened to my chicken. I gave her the baths and calcium, she finally passed a big deformed egg yesterday. Now a day later, she just sits in the coop, still unable to move much, but she eats and seems to be alright. Does it take a while for the hen to recover after or why would she still be just sitting there? help!

I have to say this is a fallacy, this does not help an egg bound chicken pass an egg. You seem like a lovely lady and you obviously care for your hens but to pass this info out is really not helpful. I have had a number of ex battery rescue hens who have become egg bound. 90% of the time when the hen is egg bound, the egg has become stuck and has stopped moving through the oviduct. It starts to conjeal and blocks other eggs passage that try to move down the oviduct. If you have spotted it because the hen is waddling like a penguin or has a swollen abdomen, the chances are it is already too late to save her however it is worth a try. You are right in that calcium may help, and a warm bath may give some comfort from the pressure. You can also give calcivet if you have some in your hens chook meds box. However the way tos top infection or the condition worsening is get to a vet asap and have him sryringe out any fluid in the belly. This has to be done very carefully in order to avoid injecting into one of the many air sacs around the hens body as if you puncture them, the fluid in her abdomen will fill the air sac and cause her to drown. The vet has twice pulled out nearly a litre of fluid from a couple of my hens bellies and thankfully it was non-infectious peritonitis. Strong antibiotics were then given to prevent / or tackle infection. Problems occur when a number of eggs have become blocked inside the length of the oviduct. The egg that has come away would have been at the bottom of the oviduct/tube near the vent. This egg could be several days old and has just moved down as it has been pushed out by the build up behind that grows. The mass becomes congealed and solid and very difficult to move down and then becomes stuck. A bit like a blocked toilet pipe. However the hen will keep producing eggs every 26 hours. If they have no-where to go they will end up missing the oviduct, like an ectopic pregnancy and will go into the abdomen. Some ex battery hens have oviducts that become loose and elastic which can cause the egg to miss the oviduct and go into the abdomen too. This is when egg peritonitis starts building up. If she can get to a vet in time the liquid can be drained. However if left too long it can become infectious peritonitis. Then there is very little change of recovery, the earlier she is seen the better her chances. If she can be drained then the vet can give a tablet that stops the eggs laying process for a number of months. She won't be a layer again as the damage in her oviduct will be done but she can live happily as a pet.

+crazy808ish Hi! Shouldn't be any diff based on the more that raise them :-) I think more remedies come out of more people and some not quite the right thing to do! The ailments have always been there no doubt. Sometimes some hens do better than others with the treatment. Out of all the ailments they do get, my more feared is egg bound, sadly they don't often do well. I had two of my girls operated on. They had their oviduct removed. One died on the vets table, the other very special lady lived 24 hours and sadly went downhill in the night. If you can catch them ontime the pill than stops them laying is the best way and then they can carry on living and being happy :-))) Mx

Hey everybody!! I just wanted to let you all know! I had a hen who 3 days ago I saw my hen- all the signs and symptoms of egg bound. She was looking pretty bad- yesterday I did put her in a warm Epsom salt bath ( I filled a horse feed bowl with warm water, Epsom salt, sea salt, and baking soda- in my kitchen sink with a laundry basket over her and covered that with a towel- I put relaxing 432 hertz music) and played that for her- She sat in it for about 1 hour I also gave her an eye dropper if 2droos Lobelia and 1 dropper full of valerian ( valerian relaxes muscles and lobelia pushes things forward- this is also a GREAT remedy for a collicking horse!! ) I made cod oil many months ago and rubbed some of this on her hind end and put it in the herb solution and gave her an eye dropper full- I did this two times- She JUST passed her egg!! I am going to keep her in the box in the chicken coup for the rest of the day just for quite along with food and water- I also have egg shell calcium with her and all the other chickens as well. I also have a slippery road lm tree which I share the branches with you hen- it’s a demulcent and nutritive. I’m just so happy so I had to share this story 🌹❤️🌹

You guys are going to think im crazy but my hen was egg bound with a soft shell egg. We did the 20 min epsom salt bath and nothing. So i used some KY jelly on my finger and barley inserted it enough fir the KY to go inside the chicken. 5 min later she laid the soft shell egg and is doing great. Just an idea if youre out ways to save your hen.
