Im a 13yo girl, and i asked my stepdad to fix my bike because my gears werent shifting correctly. He rode my bike uphill but was still dumb to understand the problem so he denied to atleast listen to what my problems were with the bike. He got annoyed so then i decided to just do it myself because he's just lazy asf i guess.. In the garage and at the end of this video i understood what the problem was and i fixed it with the tools we have in the garage!! thank you so much!!

Finally found a video that addressed my problem, front gear would not shift on to the largest gear. Bought the bike used with this problem. Simple adjustment of the high limiter screw and problem solved. Your the MAN! Thanks for the videos.

Im a new and casual bike rider. I just got a 7 speed bike from Walmart and not sure if it was like this at the store or if it was from shoving the bike in my little car, but the chain came off and it wasn't shifting gears. having absolutely NO experience with mechanics of any kind, this video helped me fix the shifting gear problem!!! thank you!!!

Came back here to say THANK YOU! My bike shifts perfectly now! Who knew all it would take is a shot of PB Blaster followed up with some chain lube oil? I sure didn't. Thought I would have to adjust the derailleurs somehow so was searching KZbin to learn how to adjust them, maybe take them apart. It didn't feel like anything was "stuck" but the gears weren't shifting when the brake-levers were moved in or clicked (the gear shifters). Very happy with this simple fix! I have WD40 and 3 kinds of PB blaster (regular, chain lube and white grease) so I use this stuff all the time, but just didn't think that was the problem here.

This guy is THE BEST instructor teacher mentor whatever you wish to call it when it comes to bikes! All of the videos are so clear and zooms up on the individual parts so that you can easily see the part. Great lighting. And he explains things thoroughly but in easy to understand terms. He doesn't just tell u HOW to fix it but also WHY. WHY it's not working right. WHY it gets assembled in this order etc. Which is a big importance to me. He really breaks it down. I find it so much easier to comprehend how to fix a certain aspect of my bike if I know how it works the mechanics of it, and why it isn't doing as intended.

After a lot of research on YT to fix my bike's rear derailleur shifting issue I finally found the issue and solution! Couldn't find a YT video on this matter! I explain it below: 1) The most common type of housing has an inner thin wires tube and an outer plastic covering tube. Apparently after a while because of pressure the outer plastic tube jams and the inner tube wires are exposed that can get crushed by pressure on ferrels! This causes a serious metal-metal fraction between the cable and thin wires of housing, worse than any dirt or rust can do! 2) Loosen the shifter cable and release the cable at the derailleur (watch YT guides) and through all housings to free all housing parts. 3) You have to cleanly cut the exposed thin wires of housing to align it with plastic cover tube. Be careful not to block inner empty hole (where the cable passes) by crushing the wires. You need a sharp wire cutter (or a specialized tool from bike shop!) Then clean up both ends of housing and lube a bit. 4) Insert the cable in all housing parts and through the derailleur cable clamp. Since you lost some housing length, to have the same tension on the cable at a particular gear you need to pull the cable out of derailleur cable clamp a bit compared to what it was before. This needs to be fine tuned to have perfect correspondence between shifter and derailleur for all gear range (watch YT guides). Hope it helps someone.

It is a very straight forward video. Thank you. My gears do move up to the largest and back to the smallest gear. The issue with my bike is always that the chain will not move swiftly BETWEEN the gears. I keep adjusting the shifters from time to time. They work for a short while but within a few days the shifting from one gear to the next becomes problematic again.

Feeling proactive, I decided to lightly tighten all of the screws on my new bike. For some reason, my bike would no longer shift gears and I was stumped~ Little did I know, the screws at 5:24 are not supposed to screw in all the way! This video just helped me out today. I just bought a Trek Verve 1. The front shifter was not shifting off Gear 1. (has 3 gears) I tried the screws didnt help. Pulled manually on cable bingo..it shifted. So I determined the builder didnt pull the cable tight enough. Found allen screw at end of cable. Loosened it and pulled cable tighter with needle nose pliers and tightened it back. Fixed..gears shifting now.

Your video taught me so much about my mountain bike. I’ve never worked on one before (its a 21 speed) and my front derailleur was stuck on the small cog. I loosened up the tension on the cage so that i could physically move my chain over to the middle cog because there were no tension in my gears while switching up and down. Now i have great tension and they are changing at least a little. I can’t get the front derailleur to switch between cogs... any tips? For now it at least works on one cog, but i would like it to work completely 😂

I replaced my cable (Bell 4-cable box from Walmart) and rear derailleur works fine now. Also, the rear clamp had a groove that would not clamp the cable but slid on it. Had to wrap the cable around the clamp, works fine now.

Thanks for the great videos! When I press the right hand shifter (for rear) to shift up to the highest gear, sometime I press it all the way but it doesn’t seem to grip the cable. So, it doesn’t shift. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Well done video. My Shimano Revoshift 7 speed was making a slight noise when pedalling except in the very high gears and very low gears. I decided to adjust it according to the manual provide with the bike (huffy Sienna).Well, I made things worse. I went from a bit of noise with a full range of gears, down to 1 gear. This video filled in some blanks in the manual by explaining how the high and low adjustment screws function on the rear derailleur. Thanks.

Hello, I'm genuinely curious, what's the name or details of your drop bar brakes and shifters? and how much are they? I'm planning to make my mtb i got from my birthday a few months ago become a dropbar, but I don't know how to change the cables so I'll just switch the cables into new brakes or shifters but yeah i have this problem on my mtb where i cannot shift down to the smallest cog and the biggest front derailleur.

Yes i do agree and i change the cables when i have bike in for servicing but this trike is new 6 weeks old, one is not jumping to conclusions that a cable need replacing. But we got there and all sorted

RJ I am having a problem with a 7 speed trike, tightening the cable is is allowing to get on to the big gear 7 but i dont seem to be able to get higher than gear 3 i have adjusted the index screw but making no difference. all quite new equipment. the shifter is working ok. Loosening the cable lets me get down the gears.

Go through the video and isolate the issue. I can't tell you the cause without working on the bike.

I have shimano sora shifters. The chain moves ok from small to larger cogs, but jumps directly to the smallest cog when I down shift. Derailleur, chain and cassette are brand new. My mechanic says that the right shifter is the culprit since it's badly corroded and needs replacement. But that's expensive and not worth it. Any alternative on how to fix this issue?

I recently got a Schwinn Aluminum Comp from Walmart and the front derailleur refuses to properly shift through the 3 gears. There's always some kind of issue and fixing one problem creates another problem. I've previously took my first Aluminum Comp back to Walmart and exchanged it for another, I'm now on my 3rd Aluminum Comp and all 3 of the bikes have the same issue. I'm hoping you can offer some insight on how to fix this. Here's the problem I'm experiencing in more detail: when shifting from 1 -> 2 (smallest inner to middle chainring) there's a lot of chain rub but it fails to actually make the shift. I've resetted the shift cable tension by loosing and re-tightening the pinch bolt on the FD cage. In fact, I made it a little tighter because I found that's the only way to make the FD cage move enough so it can actually shift from 1->2. That creates a new problem, shifting from 2->3 creates a lot of cable tension; I can feel it when I press the shift lever. When this happens either downshifting 3->2 fails or the shift snaps pass 2 going directly from 3->1. If I loosen the cable tension enough so the downshift works again, well the upshift 1->2 problem reappears. I also took it into a REI bike shop today so they can have a look at it. Their diagnoses was that it's probably a component or parts issue. When I was looking closely at the chainring during an upshift 1->2 it looks like the middle chainring isn't catching the chain even though the derailleur cage looks aligned with the middle ring when looking from the top. I've been at this problem for 2 weeks now and it's been driving me mad. I've tried adjusting the FD cage height, angle, cable tension, made it tight, made it loose, completely loosened the L and H limit screws so it's not a factor. I'm starting to wonder if this problem is even solvable. Only thing I haven't really considered is chainring gap to frame, chainring teeth that's suppose to catch the chain or maybe the FD cage width is too wide? I'm out of ideas as to what to try next.

Walmart bikes are cheap junk, with cheap components. They will give you problems. I recommend not buying bikes at Walmart, Target, etc. I usually tell people to buy a used quality bike, instead of a cheap new bike.
