Thanks for sharing the video, which I wish I had have seen 3 months ago. I had a crash onto the deck of a slow moving yacht after getting some great shots from above. The mistakes I made in regards to the crash were: I should have got the captain to stop the yacht and/or switched to Atti mode. Even with the yacht only doing 4 knots it was difficult to manoeuvre the Inspire for my catcher to do his job. As I was fast running out of battery I ended up crashing the Inspire on the deck, just missing the mast stays. Luckily the camera and gimbal were not damaged. I was able to secure a new mounting plate and cables from a local dealer in Australia. I had pulled the Inspire apart, to see what parts I needed, about a week before I was able to do the repair and struggled with getting it all back together. Like you, I lost the last 20 seconds of footage, which was a great pity as I'm sure it would have been interesting reviewing my panic stricken attempts to prevent a wet landing. Thanks again

David Barton Hopefully you got most of the footage you needed before that crash! There is a definite fine line between not pushing yourself and ending up with boring shots and pushing it too hard and getting yourself into trouble with very unideal situations. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for watching!

Great video...and timely for me. A nasty tree reached out and grabbed my Inspire today. The camera/gimbal detached when the mounting plate broke and the entire assembly fell to the ground. The quad itself checks out OK, except for the props which needed to be replaced. I am hoping the X3 camera and gimbal will be OK too, but until I get the new cables (the old cable connectors were torn and broken during the fall) I won't know for sure. Consider myself lucky to get out of this without having to ship it back to DJU or replace the entire camera---cost to me of $75 which I am more than happy to pay. Again, thanks for posting the video. (by the way, Ogden here...awaiting my FAA 333 exemption which should be approved any day after being submitted last August!)
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 8 жыл бұрын
+Denny Montgomery Those trees will do that. Especially if you are flying near Hogwarts. I hear the Whomping Willow is pretty aggressive! haha. Yeah I hope your x3 is alright. I know they are pretty sensitive to damage and you can end up having what initially appears to be a working gimbal and then it just goes limp after a few minutes and you get the "gimbal overload" error. Which the camera was a little less prone to damage. Maybe in the Inspire 2. That's awesome about your FAA 333! We've got a few sports licensed pilots in the office here which is nice to have on hand. If you aren't a member of the UAV Legal News & Discussion group on facebook it's a really good one to join to keep up of the what I consider to be not so clear regulations right now and the new bills getting through the senate regarding UAV's. CineChopper University is also a good organization to be a part of. The facebook group is really great and Chris (he's down in Orem/Provo does a lot of stuff with Devin Super Tramp) is the guy that started it. Lots of good info and good people. Happy flying!

+AlphaGraphics Bountiful Thanks, appreciate your comments. I was worried about the same things, but did a full FCF to include a lot of hard maneuvering (after ground checking the camera and gimbal) and it worked perfectly. Knock on wood. Watched the rollout of the P4 and while tempting, I will wait for the Inspire 2 I think---the camera on the Phantom series is just not professional grade. By the way, FINALLY got my FAA 333 Exemption today. Now the marketing and work begins...

Thanks for this, I busted my front end up today after having the drone pushed into trees from higher than normal winds here in the UK. I was also trying out ATTI mode for my commercial qualification so it didn't react quick enough. Anyway the bits will arrive tomorrow, job for the weekend!
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 9 жыл бұрын
+Neil Soane Hopefully all your parts came and you're up and flying again! ATTI is great for getting those smooth gliding shots without the GPS mode fighting it but you definitely have to be more careful. I used to fly a Phantom 1 and it was SUPER noticeable in the footage when flying in GPS mode so I only flew in ATTI, but with the Inspire 1 I've found you don't notice GPS mode really at all in the footage for most situations. I'm excited to check out some of the new flight modes and new camera system they just released though!

Same thing happened to me.... did you have to purchase a new cam or can you get PARTS TO FIX THE CAM.... the only thing that broke is the arm on the cam... and well the ribbon connector. So replacement arm piece and ribbon would be the only thing to purchase to fix cam....

+Guy Letourneau Sorry to hear that! I'm pretty sure the camera and gimbal are one part in the parts list so I don't think you can buy them separately. The camera body on mine actually had a few cracks, but I have a feeling it would still work alright.

+AlphaGraphics Bountiful Wow this is making me thing twice before purchasing the X5 Cam unit!
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 9 жыл бұрын
X5 is pretty pricey. While I'd love to have it the standard inspire 1 camera seems to do the trick for now and mixes alright with the footage from the GH4. But I have to admit the dynamic range and RAW on the X5R is really REALLY tempting. It's one of those things where I feel like you can get amazing results with older gear but the newer gear gives you more wiggle room just in case you don't quite nail the shot while you're in the air. Super smart move by DJI making the new X5's pair so well with GH4 and other Micro 4/3 cameras. So many people are already flying GH4's on larger quads that this makes for a great ready to fly alternative.
@007Runmode
@007Runmode 9 жыл бұрын
+AlphaGraphics Bountiful Indeed , but if you purchase the x5r, make certain DJI offers the parts to repair it if it gets damaged, and not treat it like a 3,000.00 dollar bic lighter you strap to a flying platform, which when broken their support sounds like crickets in a field, and they just sell you a brand new one. no way! still waiting to hear about their service on that camera. I want to see a parts list before i jump in!

I recently picked up a T601, looking to do a similar repair. Great to see the step by step on your T600, very informative. Just wondering if you looked into repairing the old gimbal with motors, wires etc. All of those parts are available, so users could repair the entire camera instead of buying a whole new unit. The bottom line is to some users, the cost is not justified, but for professionals you cannot risk a faulty gimbal/camera, just buy a whole new one. Cheers and happy flying.
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 6 жыл бұрын
At the time I made this video aftermarket parts for the X3 gimbal weren't available. You basically had to buy another broken X3, try and make a Frankenstein combination of the two and hope it worked. I do think I still have the parts hanging around somewhere but don't have a huge incentive to try and piece it together again. Totally agree with the professionals just needing to get a new one. Some things are worth trying to fix, but in this case with it in so many pieces and it being a pretty precision part, I figured I would have quite a few gimbal overload errors, drifting horizon, etc. even if I could get all the pieces together. Thanks for commenting! Hopefully the guide helps do some repairs on yours.

Little UPDATE: Out of curiosity, did you junk the old gimbal ? I would be interested in buying the old one as spare parts for my current repair on my x3.. THE REAL UPDATE: I just got my gimbal fixed I would say 90% (still get the odd ROLL motor error but not in flight, just when turning the bird in my hand to test the movement), got a used one on craigslist that was also crashed, but arms were good. Swapped cameres, re-calibrated magnets and voila :) Its not easy at all though, the physical repair is easy, plug in and then NOTHING WORKS ... just video feed. Had to balance all the motor magnets at the correct point which took hours once i saw the thing were magnetic.
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 6 жыл бұрын
That's awesome you got yours working!! I'd be interested to see the process of balancing all the motor magnets. I do think I still have the parts, but mine was in a LOT of pieces and the camera itself was banged up on the USB port and some other places. Not sure how much would be salvageable. Should probably still list them on ebay or something.

What's the best thing to do with brand-new batteries? besides updating the firmware.
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 8 жыл бұрын
+stampede75 I'm not sure I totally understand your question. With the batteries you want to store them drained unless you are planning to fly within a short amount of time otherwise you may pop in a battery that says it's at 80% and then it will discharge and drop to 20% super fast. I only fly on fresh charged batteries. If they've been sitting with a charge for a while that's not good. So try to store batteries drained and plan ahead of time to charge them up either right before your fly or maybe the night before. Hope that helps and thanks for watching and commenting!
@stampede75
@stampede75 8 жыл бұрын
+AlphaGraphics Bountiful I watched a video that I cannot find on KZbin anymore. It said to charge the battery all the way then fly it for like 10 minutes and then recharge it completely again and then fly it for 15 minutes. Some kind of like training for the battery cells. It's supposed to help the battery keep a charge longer. Do you know if there is any truth in this? And or what he's talking about? Do you know of anything like this? Do you do anything to help your batteries last longer?
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 8 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard that exact thing before, but I have heard a lot of different takes on proper battery usage. Since they are "intelligent" batteries they are a slightly different beast than your standard LiPo/rechargeable battery (firmware updates, internal computer, usage log, etc) I would just stick to the basics I already mentioned about not storing fully charged batteries and making sure you are flying on a fresh charge. I'm no battery expert so someone may come tell me I'm wrong but so far that is what has worked for me and what I believe DJI recommends.

I haven't heard of anyone selling those parts other than private sellers on ebay. You MIGHT be able to call up a repair shop and see if they will sell you the parts you need but I don't think anyone really keeps parts on inventory that don't have an actual SKU from DJI.

I noticed there is a single screw hole through the gimbal mounting plate and into the body. Is there supposed to be a screw there? It's right directly behind where the camera mounts onto the plate. If so, what size is that screw? I had a crash too and I noticed this when repairing. Thanks!
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 9 жыл бұрын
Duane Broussard Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I don't believe there is supposed to be a screw in there as that would make the mounting plate fixed and the shock absorbers wouldn't be able to do their job. Mine didn't originally come with a screw in there and a screw to put in there didn't come with my repair parts so I'm guessing it is for something else. Maybe there are instances where the plate needs to be hard fixed to the body of the Inspire 1 but nothing that I know of. Thanks for watching and commenting and again sorry for the late response!

Ugh. That's no good. You might check the pins on the connectors to see if any of them are bent or out of place. I'm also assuming you got one of the white X3 cameras and not the black ones that were for the DJI OSMO. The black OSMO cameras do not work with the Inspire 1, but the white Inspire 1 camera DOES work on both the Inspire 1 and the OSMO handle. Not sure why they decided to do it that way but they did. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching and commenting.

+johncy kleno Yeah no problem. It may take me a little bit to get around to shooting it with all the client work we have going on right now, but I'd be happy to show you the insides of the x3 gimbal/camera. Like I've replied to a few other comments on here, there is really not a whole lot you can "repair" on the x3 gimbal. It's a part that when it breaks it's time to buy a new one. Small ribbon cables usually get cut as well as other damage. So even if you were able to get the individual parts that are in the x3, it's such a precision part that you would be replacing pretty much EVERY part and might as well buy a new one.

@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 9 жыл бұрын
Hugh Wong I would imagine the motors get warm but I've never actually touched them right after a flight so I don't know for sure. I don't think there would be a difference between the first time ever flying versus any other flight, but maybe someone else that sees your comment here can give you a better answer. I would say if they are super hot after a flight there may be something strange going on but since they do spin super fast some heating up would be logical to me.

+Neville Bramley The camera is just in a box in pieces like you see in the video. From what I've researched there are likely a handful of components inside the "white egg" that are still okay, but since so much of the gimbal/white egg case are broken it's better to just buy a new one.

Hey my friend I was experiencing a problem with my Recording formats I did land on the camera in the grass one time and raise it up immediately don't know if this caused a problem but I noticed that one of the contacts in the connector on the drone seems to be a little bent on the ends and my camera only lets me record in 4K moods. if I try 1080 or 720The app freezes and cannot take anymore video until I restart the inspire so I ordered the kit from B&H today was wondering your thoughts on that. When I called DJi today they asked me to take the camera off and put it back on that's when I realize that might be the problem. Any thoughts?? anyone.

Hi there. Any way of fixing the gimbal itself or is it just as good to buy a new one. Anyone who has sent it for repair with DJI?
@AGBountiful
@AGBountiful 9 жыл бұрын
+Magnus M I think it really depends on how broken the gimbal is. 99% of the time I would say it's time to just buy a new gimbal. I don't think they really sell the individual parts for the gimbal itself so you would have to find another broken gimbal that happened to have the parts you needed... and even then you may not actually be able to fix it back to functioning correctly. In my experience when the gimbal breaks, it breaks for good. Also with the new OSMO camera out at a lower price point and all the other new camera options for the inspire, they may drop the price on the X3 cameras which would be pretty great. As far as repairs from DJI... I think that with the amount of drones they have sold their customer support gets pretty overwhelmed and I've heard it takes a while to send in and get it back. If you CAN fix it yourself I would opt for that instead.

Ec130Rhine Hey thanks for watching and commenting! I'm glad you liked it. Part 40 (camera and gimbal) was $550, Part 41 (mounting plate) $80 and Part 17 (cables) $4. And then it was free shipping so a total of $634. Not super cheap but since I use it for paying gigs I have to have it flying to make money. As far as spare parts that are good to have... I probably wouldn't go out and buy any parts just to have them other than maybe props, but when something breaks and you have to repair it go ahead and keep the broken parts around. For example I now have an extra gimbal mount because it was only the gimbal mounting plate that got damaged. I also have an extra gimbal case, ND filter, rubber dampeners, etc.

Hey great video with awesome tips! I bumped my camera on the grass, nothing too bad at all, but it was enough for one corner of the mounting plate to pop out from the rubber shock absorber. Now the camera has developed a shake - it's a little left-to-right vibration and the horizon is about 1-2 degrees off from level. As far as i can tell, nothing is broken. Have you had any experience with this? Thanks

+Ja Co Thanks for watching and commenting. I've found the Inspire 1 is a bit more fragile that people expect it to be (especially if they have come from flying a phantom) I've never experienced the issue you're having but the first thing I would check would be the actual camera/gimbal. Take it off and check to see if all the motors are still lining up and that they rotate smoothly. If something got bent in one of those pivot points it could mess things up. This stuff is pretty precision so the little bumps can really throw things off. Hope that helps and that you get your inspire 1 up and running 100% again.

So what did you end up doing with the old camera? I need the shell of the old camera. If you're interested in selling please let me know.

Michael Hey Michael I got your call sorry for not responding sooner! I've kept all the broken parts JUST in case I end up needing any part of them in the future. There is some damage to the white shell, a crack on the front near the lens and on the back by the USB port. So I'm not sure if it would work for you or not. If you're still interested you can call back and we might be able to work something out.

AlphaGraphics Bountiful I just need the plastic plating on the back of the fan, and the plastic covers around the gimbal next to the camera. The white housing isn't a big deal but since my is scratched up but not cracked. it can be repainted. Let me know if you're ok parting it out. Give me a call.

Thanks for sharing, it was a good video, hopefully I don't have to do this, now I know how. Have come really close to hitting a tree head on several times and have reversed very hard and gone up to avoid.

snathla Haha I really hope you don't ever have to do it either! But luckily most repairs are pretty simple on the inspire 1. The bad ones are when you break any of the carbon fibre rods since they have all the wires running through them. Glad you liked it and thanks for watching/commenting!

+Marc S Glad you liked it! We should have another one posted soon... which unfortunately means we had another crash... not cool. Quick release prop came right off in the middle of a flight and the inspire 1 fell like a rock. Caused a bit of damage but fortunately it was over a parking lot so it was only damage to the inspire 1.

Thanks, very helpful. I had a similar incident but it appears the camera/gimbal took most of the impact. There is one spot in the middle of the mounting plate with a hole and there is then a receiving screw hole below on the main body, do you know what this is for? I have a little damage around the inside of this whole, it likely got jammed into the screw mount on impact but didn't know if it has any function or if it has to do with manufacturing or something else. www.dropbox.com/s/lmvtutvbr876601/Screenshot%202015-08-04%2012.54.39.png?dl=0

Jake Fields Someone else had that exact same question! I actually didn't even notice it until they brought it up. As far as I can tell it doesn't have any function and none of my replacements parts came with anything to put in there. It would seem like putting anything there to attach the plate to the quad would keep the rubber dampeners from working. It very well could be used as part of the manufacturing process. If I find out otherwise I'll let you know, but as for now it looks like it isn't anything to worry about.

There really isn't a way of repairing that part once it's broken since it's a precision part that they don't even sell separately. One of the big downsides to the Inspire 1 is that when the camera gets messed up 99% of the time you have to scrap it and buy a new camera. We just used the common search term "fix" since most people won't be searching for replacing parts and this is the way to solve the problem of a broken gimbal and other common parts broken along with it. Probably not the answer you're looking for as a new camera isn't cheap and it would be nice to swap out a broken part, but unfortunately it's extremely rare that you can salvage the X3 camera after it's been broken. You'd end up having to buy a new camera and then swapping the parts over to the broken one... which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do.

Oh cool! I haven't found ANYWHERE to buy the individual parts. You'll have to let me know where you guys have found them. I've only ever seen the full gimbal/camera being sold. The closest thing I have found for a disassembly video of the x3 is by the KZbinr addiengr1 it should be a related video on this one, but I don't think it goes into the details you are looking for. If you figure it out though you should post a video! I'd love to see it.

indeed the x5r is attractive but only if they sell.parts to repair it if it takes a little fall. If they have the same oh well you broke the arm, buue another one attitude I may altogether sell this Inspire 1. way too risky, imagine taking a small hit with the x5r and you break the arm, which is real easy and they go oh well no support sorry! My advice is wait to see if they will give a full support before touching those poppies to fly around in the sky.

+Guy Letourneau Yeah... we just had another crash while on a shoot in California. A quick release prop popped off and the inspire 1 fell like a rock onto pavement. Not pretty. Surprisingly the gimbal got banged up and makes a little bit of a funny noise but still seems to function fine. I'm going to try and take the good parts from the really smashed one in this video and replace the banged up parts on the newly broken one. I did do some searching about repairs and pricing and while I don't think you can buy the gimbal arms yourself if you send it in to DJI (and possibly other certified repair places) they can fix the gimbal arms and whatnot for much less than the cost of buying a new one. In the case in this video is seemed like a lost cause just because it blew up into a LOT of pieces. I'll probably try and send everything in for repairs and see how much it would cost to repair everything. The hope is less than $500 which is what I kind of gathered from what other people have said it has cost them for similar crashes to the one I just had. Broke the carbon fibre arm and a few other odds and ends.

I did the actual repair, it can be done but its not straight forward at all. Requires each motor magnet to be re-calibrated. Generally they go out sync when a crash occurs, and when the arms are taken apart.

+Dantay Westwood (Westwood Films) Yeah I see your point, definitely not meant to be misleading. I didn't actually fix the mounting plate either. It's one of those things where I debated on saying fix, repair, replace, install, etc. Really I replaced/installed the parts but in the end it seemed like most people needing this information wouldn't be searching using the word replace or install, but I made sure to put those words in the tags just in case.
