Well, retail-grade lights....very much so. Commercial-grade lights will last at least a decade which is longer than most relationships. So, they've got that going for them. Which is nice.

Hello YaYa. Two suggestions. One, I realize this is an incandescent example but it may prove useful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYXJin9mg6aBhpY Two, I would recommend giving Ulta a call so they walk you through it. Their number is 888-858-2548. In the meantime, I'll see if I happen to have a set of non-functioning LED net lights on hand that will allow me to film a "How To" video. If I do, I'll film it and release it for you the first part of next week.

Well, I fixed mine, I had to add one of those green little plastic box things and cut the wires to put in it. Everything worked after that and replacing a couple dead bulbs. However, after about a week or two of the lights working perfectly.... most of the lights went out again. All of them were out to the point where I had installed the little green box thing. When I pushed in the neutral wire in the box, the lights went back on again. So I noticed that metal piece inside that looks like a razor blade cut around the insulation on the neutral wire. I trimmed it back again and tried once more so that the neutral wire wasn't exposed. Lights worked once again. 10 min. later... they went back out. I don't know what to do now about that neutral wire that keeps getting cut and exposed by that metal razor piece inside the green plastic thing. That is what the problem is.

That's an interesting issue, Tacotac10. Have you tried switching out the pods? You should have received two in the package. Another option, you can always take the pod off and use a regular electric connector cap. I use those more than anything else. You can always use a heat shrink as well but the connector caps are a the quickest. Either the cap or the heat shrink will solve the problem!

I just bought this tool... very useful! The one thing I am finding challenging is... Where can I buy bulk spare LED bulbs online? Most light strings only provide 2 spare bulbs.
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Scotty. That question has come up a lot in the comments so far. The answer is two-fold. If you are using commercial-grade LEDs then you can purchase them from any online commercial-grade supplier. www.christmaslightsetc.com/ is currently having a 40% sale. Creative Displays has their 40% pre-sale in about 8 weeks. If you need retail grade lights the easiest, and by far the cheapest way, is to simply buy an additional string of matching LEDs. I always buy an extra string of 100ct lights to use as 100 spares. While you can buy replacement LED bulbs in a package they run $6 for 5 bulbs. Which is why it is easier and cheaper to buy the extra $8 box of 100 ct lights.

Hello, Philsy. Actually, that's a common sign of one particular issue. Often times one bulb will test fine BUT upon closer inspection you'll notice one of the bulb's copper prongs has worn off. It carries a low light signal but it can't deliver at full strength. I actually prefer the center section being out since I know what the problem is. On the 3 wired bulbs, make certain you test each of the three wires. Sometimes one will carry a low signal, one won't do anything, and the third is the correct wire to test. Let me know if that works!

Hey there, Matt. This is made by a Chicago company. No need for a warranty through Home Depot though, this comes with a lifetime guarantee from the company's owner. I've heard that the 2019 models had a few bad batteries out of the box but I've not heard any complaints since then. I think you'll quickly gain back the cost of this with the lights that you'll fix versus replacing.

I have strings from Walmart, they look like old c-9s, small led light in a plastic globe. I only have a complete string failure. I have never found a blown fuse. The light keeper doesn’t work because I don’t have any lights that come on. Any suggestions?
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 10 ай бұрын
Whole string outages are the worst, Randy! I am guessing these are LED stings, correct? If so, it may be your rectifier that went bad. When that goes, the string goes. The only two other options is A) you have multiple failures which are prohibiting the flow of energy to the working bulbs or B) you have corrosion in multiple sockets that it too is blocking the current. To find corrosion, utilize a flashlight and look at the interior of the sockets.

@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline Жыл бұрын
Ah, that is frustrating. No worries though as that is a common occurrence. You simply have multiple failures in the string. My personal record is 8 bad bulbs in one string of 100 ct LEDs. Step one, try a different outlet to ensure that's not the issue. Secondly, test the fuses. While it's rarely the fuses, it does happen. Thirdly, begin testing individual bulbs. Oftentimes, I'll have a chewed through string or missing bulbs that I just don't notice until I begin going socket by socket.

You nailed it, Ken. I tell folks that all the time. Unfortunately, you can't depend on stores carrying matching lights for you to go back to when you need to replaced strings and color match to your existing strings. The ONLY work around is to go ahead and buy several back up lights during your initial purchase for future problems or to fix your existing strings. This tool is a life-saver! Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty!

Hello again, Leer. I still have my grandfather's lights from the 50s, and they are still going strong! You can buy replacements from many stores, but you're right, the correct bulb size and socket are key to getting your broken strings functional again! Sometimes the bulb they're selling isn't the right one for you. In this case, repurposing the bulbs from one string to save 10 other strings is the best way to go. Happy holidays!

Charlie, the tool pierces the wire when you pull the trigger. But I never saw you seal any of these holes. Doesn't that create an entry point for water intrusion, corrosion, failure point in the future?
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 9 ай бұрын
That's a great question, Sal. Christmas light wire is actual self healing. Although the LED Keeper uses insulation piercing technology in order to tap into the LED light set and illuminate functional sections, the material used to manufacture the insulation has the tendency to “heal” itself. The miniature puncture left behind might not even be visible since it is so tiny.

That's gotta be classic short copper situation, Gustavo. If they are all illuminated with the Kepper but not when they are plugged into an outlet, most of the time that is due to a bulb or multiple bulbs having short or missing prongs. As the bulbs sit in the socket, their prongs will wear down and loose the ability to have a proper connection. Every once in awhile it will be due to a corroded socket.

Hey there, Gerald. It can be frustrating to fix lights when they are already installed. I have this vidoe about just that situation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn3Uk3hor9F-fqcsi=mpxoddGTn-uC6Txp For your specific problem it is likely one of two issues. What I hear you are saying is that you are testing the lights with the LED Keeper and when you test them, the light bulb you are testing still attached to the string will illuminate but the light on either side of a single bulb will be dark. This normally occurs when you have either multiple bad bulbs or when the bulb's copper prongs are missing or not fully making contact inside of the socket. Let me know if that isn't what you are describing.

What would cause all lights to flicker once then off complete? They never come back on. Wiggling the wire does nothing. Unplugging and manipulating the plug causes the once time brief flicker
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline Жыл бұрын
You likely have one of two issues, Jet. The most likely cause is that you have a break in the copper somewhere on the string. The second possibility is that you have corrosion in one of the bulb sockets. I would recommend starting your search with a flashlight and at the male end of the string. The break is likely at or near the beginning of the string. If you have a corrosive socket, you will certainly need the flashlight to shine into the socket, once you've removed the bulb, to get conformation that there is in fact corrosion in the socket. Also, the flashlight can assist you in checking the line for micro breaks seeing if there is any exposed copper shining through the plastic coating. Please, let me know which one ends up being the culprit!

@ChristmasOnCrestline Ай бұрын
Hey there, John! That's the question, isn't it. In 2023, Walmart started the trend in selling strings with non-replaceable bulbs. Now, the only solution is the one you mentioned. You are now compelled to cut out the bad bulb and reconnect the line. Or, it compels you to go back to Walmart and buy more lights that will break on you once again. More big box stores are following suit this year. Many hobbyists are moving over to custom strings. They are super simple to make and last 5-10 years.

You should be able to test the string via the LED Keeper. You can check out this video about the 1:20 mark www.ledkeeper.com/4-minute-demonstration-videos/ You should be able to test the sting and have bulbs illuminate. But, yes, not being able to test each bulb after extracting it really lessens your chance to fix it. Just this year, Walmart has transitioned into not allowing their LEDs to be removable.

@ChristmasOnCrestline

Yes, they are indeed frustrating, Josh. The trick is to test each light on both sides of the bulb. While, takes more time to test icicles than a normal strand, I can generally fix a set of these in under 15 minutes. With a normal string, I'm done in less than 3. It's still faster and cheaper than driving to the store and getting new sets that may or may not match the light color of the others.

@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 2 жыл бұрын
That was a great idea to test the string's power, Nick. Yes, get the Led Keeper. You likely have one of two problems. You either have several bulbs out at once or you have a corroded bulb socket. The most likely answer is multiple bad bulbs. The Keeper will help you identify which bulbs are bad. When first starting out with the tool, plan on each string taking 5 - 10 mins to fix, especially with multiple failures. However, after 5 or so strings, you really get the hang of this and you'll start knocking back strings in 2-3 mins.

Hello, Sherih. When this happens to me, I either have a shortened or broke prong one of the bulbs. In my experience, I oftentimes get the same reaction when they are plugged in but they go out as I manipulate the cord. Another option is that one of the bulb's simply is not fully seated in its socket and just needs a little push. To find a shortened prong, you will need to check the three bulbs on either side of the issue socket.

@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline Жыл бұрын
Hey there, Almuen! You have multiple failures in your string. The best/easiest way to fix this is to concentrate on one bulb at a time. Assuming this is a standard 100 ct LED string, plug the lights in and use the place marker to mark your last working bulb immediately prior to the first bad bulb. Then mark the last "bad bulb" with the other place marker. Next, go halfway to the next working bulb. place the wire into the Keeper's hook and pull the trigger. This should illuminate one or more bulbs that were previously dark. Now, move your marker to the newest bulb you now know is functional and mark that. Continue this pattern until you find an LED bulb that will not illuminate with the Keeper when you test on either side of the bulb. Remove that bulb from the string and examine both the bulb and the socket. Odds are you will find either a short/missing wire, a corroded socket, or simply a bulb that has permanently malfunctioned. Make certain to test the bulb in the Keeper's Bulb Tester to make certain the bulb itself was indeed the problem. If all that doesn't work, call John at 888-858-2548. He'll fix you right up!

The first thing that comes to mind is you have exposed wire somewhere and the connection isn't solid. If the bulbs are built into the tree then you may have to contact the manufacturer on a fix. Another option would be If this is a removable string then you can test it as normal with the Keeper. If the string is not removable from the tree but the bulbs are, you can test each bulb with the Keeper until you find the broken bulb.

Hey there, Derrick. I think you are saying that you have a string of 100 count LED lights and half of them do not work. You are using the LED Keeper and and when you test the string, they do not light up at all. So, two quick things that may sound silly but need to be asked. 1) These are LED lights, correct? 2) You do have the LED Keeper plugged into the LED Light string, correct? If the answer is yes to both, you may have a bad rectifier on the string. I have not seen an LED string that lights up 50% of the lights when it is plugged in but doesn't illuminate at all with the Keeper. So, let's do this for you...1) Next Monday, at 2 pm (CST) I'll have the owner of the LED Keeper on my show for a live interview and I'll ask him your question and see what his solution is. If you are in a hurry, call 888-858-2548 and they should be able to trouble shoot this and get you set up!

Hello, Tom. Unfortunately, if it is in fact the relay that is bad, relays can't be fixed. However, having that many relays on a single string, it would be worth your time checking the fuses. Having fuses go bad is actually fairly rare but does happen when there are more than two relays on a string.

Hello, Carlee. You read my mind. I actually have a upcoming video addressing this topic. The trick is to plug the end of the deer's lights into an extension cord, then plug that cord into the Keeper. This produces the same effect as being directly plugged into the deer. Then you can use the Keeper to test the lights without removing the lights from the prop. The only additional hassle is that you need to use additional markers (clothes hanger pins is what I call them) to mark your line of good bulbs. I hope that helps!

Boom! Two questions. 1. I have C6’s with three strands of wire. Can you test any strand throughout the process? 2. Does the nub designed to replace the entire socket, if bad, use a small amount of electricity, or is it simply a bridge for the wires to reconnect? Thanks! Great video!
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Seah. The three wired strings are much easier to test compared to the four wire. Of the three wires, you will need to test the wire that runs from light to light. Loosen up the wires and you'll notice one wire in specific that goes into the light socket and out while the other two skip a few bulbs. This is the wire you are meant to test. You nailed it, the nub is designed to replace an entire socket should you have a socket or point that can't be replaced. For me, this is normally from surges or squirrels having a winter snack. Hope you have a great show this year!

My prelit LED tree has an unlit section and the entire tree is on one semi-continuous strand (i.e. there are strand sections screwed together with circular type connectors. Plus each light has 4 skinny wires going into each socket. I plugged the LED keeper into the beginning of the tree but can't possibly hook the Keeper onto any of those skinny 4 wires. Should I just cut all the wires off and buy new ones? I'm baffled that the LED keeper isn't applicable. Another question is how in this world is it possible to even find replacement led bulbs with shanks that fit these sockets?
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline Жыл бұрын
Great question, Anita. The trick here is that pre-lit trees are designed to not be fixable. I have heard that the Twinkly brand is working on coming up with a fixable pre-lit tree but I've not been able to confirm that. I have yet to hear from anyone that has successfully repaired a pre-lit. The problem is that they all have a control box that makes the lights specific to that box. Oftentimes cutting them out and replacing them can cause the whole tree to fail. What brand to you have? I can reach out to the manufacture if you'd like and see what specific advice they give.
@anitamiller7724
@anitamiller7724 Жыл бұрын
@Christmas on Crestline I was actually able to fix the 20 foot unlit section by removing each unlit bulb one at a time and test them. And luckily for me, the 3rd bulb, as I removed it, all the lights came on. Go figure! That bulb was indeed dead but not having any replacements, I strung that section back onto the tree without the bulb. I'll get through this year but next year, the lights are coming off and I'll string lights each year. Lesson learned: "never buy a prelit tree." It was a Costco tree and I suppose it could be returned because that's their policy. "Anything is returnable if unsatisfactory." Thanks for the offer but I'll take care of it. Love your videos. I've learned a lot. This tree is baffling.

@@ChristmasOnCrestline And, you're not damaging wire insulation in the process. I don't normally have this problem. Most of my miniature LED Christmas lights are wired in parallel or very good quality commercial grade sets. Or they're the C series (C6 or maybe perhaps C4 smaller than C7, or I am using C7, or C9). And, I don't normally have problems with LED lights burning out. I did in the beginning but not now. Want my advice? Stay away from strands that have non-replacable bulbs. They are notorious for going bad, you can't repair them, and you can't change the colors around should you ever need to. Here's another advice. For incandescent and LED strands. Use a 12 volt DC power supply, like in your RV and alligator clips and wire. Stick the wire ends into the sockets. Stick the wire ends into socket 1 and 10 from the plug. Then, socket 11 20, and so on. Do this for every 10 bulbs. If that 10 bulbs light, move on. Keep doing that until you get to the 10 bulbs that don't light. Then drop down to every 5 bulbs until you get to the 5 bulbs that don't light. You do that, you only have to troubleshoot 5 bulbs instead of 50! Although, I don't really have a proper 12 volt power supply, I just use some power from the smoke detector power circuit of my fire alarm system but it gets the job done. Be careful though. I only said that to prove a point that any power supply available to you will work. Be careful! There's always a ever so small chance of electrocution but better safe than sorry. And, if you choose to use power from your alarm, you could damage something if you are not careful. However, point is, any power supply will work. Also, don't forget to mention that the problem may be with the fuse. If the replacement fuse pops immediately after replacement, you most likely have a dead short and the strand should be replaced. Also, if you have light strands not working, check other strands on the same run. If they are out too, check the circuit breaker and GFCI.

Hello, High Speed. This has saved me more money than any other item I have for my light show. Holiday time is Walmart's brand and while Walmart does sell individual replacement bulbs in 5 packs it makes zero sense to buy them. They sell there 5 pack of mini replacement bulbs for $4.46 each. That is a very silly price since you can purchase a string of 50 mini multicolor lights for $2.98. I'd recommend buying a single set of them and BOOM you have several replacement bulbs. You can also designate one string you already own as a donor string and use bulbs from that.

There needs to be more discussion using structure-mounted lights, and what it means when a section is dimly lit, along with unlit sections. Our nativity set has been a real challenge. Worse was the 3D horse we have. This works but the Pro nor other people discuss dim lites, and working with a design structure is a challenge that makes simple straight strings look like a cakewalk.
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience! For the quick answer, for LEDs, you likely have a poor functioning rectifier or you have corrosion in a socket or two. I completely understand the unique challenges that come with structure-mounted lights, especially when dealing with dimly lit sections and intricate designs like nativity sets and 3D figures. Addressing dimly lit sections and unlit areas in a complex design structure can indeed be more challenging than working with simple straight strings. It requires a more detailed approach to troubleshooting. I hear you on the need for more discussion on structure-mounted lights, especially when dealing with challenges beyond the basics. It's a great suggestion, and I'll make sure to incorporate more content addressing these specific issues in future videos. Hello, C Ya. You nailed it. The tool will puncture through the plastic coating and touch the wire. This hole doesn't bother the lights one bit. In fact, the plastic will actually repair itself as it will expand and contract as the temperatures fluctuate. The LED Keeper is used when the lights are plugged into it so there is no power to them minus the battery that is in the device. I've got LED C6 lights and I've watched this video a thousand times trying to fix them. When I do the part of pinching the wire with the machine nothing lights up at all. But there is a section 40ish lights in the middle that won't come on, lights work on either side. I dont know what I'm doing wrong. Any thoughts?

Hello, Jessica. That's a common problem. 95% of the time, you have multiple bad bulbs. I set a new record this season with 12 bad bulbs on one string. 6 of the bulbs had one or both of their copper prongs missing, 2 bulbs were simply duds, the rest had rust issues on the prongs. The other 5% of the time, you have a cut wire or the string is missing a bulb(s). There is the rare exception when you have a bad pin in the Keeper. If you think this might be the case here is how you fix that issue: www.ledkeeper.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Flipping-the-Pin-LED-Keeper.pdf Let me know though if it was something else so I can mention your issue to others.

When I tried it, only a few bulbs would illuminate on the one side. I expected every light to light on that side. Same result on two separate strings. Battery seems ok. Any suggestions?

Hey there, Chris. I think what you are describing is you have three stings of lights with half out on one side. When you use the Keeper not all of the lights will illuminate on that particular side. Normally this means you have more than one bad bulb. If I misunderstood, please feel free to take a quick video of the issue and email me at ChristmasOnCrestline@gmail.com. Or you can call Ulta-Lit at 888-858-2548

I picked one up years ago and it has saved me so many strings, the first one I got at Ace hardware, and I picked another one up this year for sale after Christmas for about 6 dollars at Home Depot, I have consumer grade LED strings that are now going on over 15 years of use because I can fix the fault in the string!

just purchased on how is the best was to test icicle lights?
@ChristmasOnCrestline
@ChristmasOnCrestline Жыл бұрын
Hello, David. Icicles are tricky. A simple way is to test the middle of each icicle much like you would the middle of a standard string. That will afford you the chance to both how your string is wired and where your bad bulb(s) is/are.

Home Hardware in Canada had them but you had to get it ordered through them, they would call you when it was delivered and ready for pick-up

Wow, just bought it at Canadian Tire & it took me only 5 minutes to fix 2 strands of 38 lights. One of the strand was the wire (which I gave up troubleshooting after 2 hours). I fix one strand yesterday without the LED Keeper & it took me over an hour. ❤

I don't know what I'd do without this tool. It's saved me so many trips to the store and so much money! 1 hour of normal time is quickly transformed into 5 mins with this. It's a....Keeper!

What happens when you have a set of net lights with only half of the set working?...you test each wire with the LED Keeper and nothing lights up on the “bad side” of the Xmas lights?

Hey there, Aerica. 90% of the time, you have multiple bad bulbs. My record in one 1/2 of a string is 8 bad bulbs. 6 of the bulbs had one of their copper prongs missing and 2 bulbs were simply duds. The other 10% of the time, you have a cut wire or the string is missing a bulb(s). Let me know though if it was something else so I can mention your issue to others.

Has anyone had a problem with the pin on the LED Keeper? The reviews in my neck of the woods are all about the pins breaking and no way to get replacements.

Huh, no, I've not heard of any issues with the pin malfunctioning, Shane. After researching this a bit in the Amazon review, I noticed that the company issues free pin replacements when this occurs. Here is their contact information: Phone: 888-858-2548 inform@ultalit.com

Do the rectifiers go bad? How do you test for that?

Rectifiers going bad is a real thing. Unfortunately, there's no fixing those. In my experience, they are rarely the issue. But when they are. There is no fixing them.
