@bel.cascabel4 жыл бұрын
@@856fatt Well, mine is doing a little bit better. I figured out it had a plague, I'm almost sure it's mealybugs and I tried diluted alcohol as insecticide but it was a bad idea, calathea is very sensitive so it dropped almost all leaves, it has remained with just 3 leaves for about a month. I finally put it about a meter apart from a west facing window, it gets absolutely no direct sunlight, it's getting medium indirect sunlight, and it's next to a brick wall that keeps it cool, I also started moistening the leaves with a spray once a day (at night) with rain water and kept watering it as usual (once a week with rain water because I live in a tropical country in a warm weather city). And I'm happy to tell you that yesterday I noticed a new sprout coming out of the soil and its 3 leaves have been smooth and open for about 2 weeks now. So... I guess, based on my experience, you can compare the situation you have at your place and check on your calathea situation. I really hope this was somehow helpful for you 🌱💕

Hello there! I have a Stromanthe Triostar that is in need of some TLC! It was neglected and the leaves are curled all the way up and I haven't seen any new growth in about a month. I moved to to my bright bathroom to increase the humidity, but no luck with the leaves opening up. it is in a terra-cotta pot now, I am thinking of re-potting it and giving it some plant food with a nice long soak. I recently purchased a prayer plant, and it lasted maybe 2 weeks before half of its leaves started turning yellow, brown and curling. Before a month ran out, almost all the leaves were gone and I threw it out. I watered only once a week or so, but every time I dipped a moisture meter into the soil, it showed it was moist to wet every time. So, I am not sure if it died from being over-watered or under-watered.

I have just about killed my ornata, has 2 leaves left and I even bought the big Levoit humidifier this winter! The Zebrinas are hands down my favorite aside from the Setosas so I may end it all if I kill them, may tell God I'm taking my ball and going home, lol.

How often should you be completely saturating the soil if it needs to be evenly moist? Great video. Thank you!
@HousePlantJournal5 жыл бұрын
"Keep evenly moist" means that you should be checking the soil every 2-3 days and, once you detect the weight of the pot is slightly lighter than fully saturated (say 75% from full saturation), then I pour in some water until it drains out the drainage holes. In this video, the weight of the pot was significantly lighter than fully saturated - I would estimate around 30% from full saturation. Soaking it in the sink allows for a more thorough soaking. The point is this: there are several methods of watering a plant - each method has its uses. There's not one proper method to water :)

Watering is secondary to light. If the plant was not placed where it would have the widest possible view of the sky, then watering does nothing. Your plant was starving.

When you take a cutting, you are severing that plant's ability to take up water so you should expect some curling. When the roots start growing, the leaves should be a bit less curled. Also, this is the reason why when you take a cutting, it shouldn't have too many leaves.

Would you PLEASE clarify the myth or truth regarding Calatheas being ultra sensitive to tap water? I hear it so much! “Make sure you either use rain water or distilled water when watering Calatheas or their leaf tips will turn brown and crispy.” In this video you used tap water. In your videos and in your book you never make mention of the no tap water “rule” for certain plants like Calatheas, Spider Plants, and Dracaenas.
@HousePlantJournal4 жыл бұрын
I've come to realize two things: tap water from different cities is highly varied. Toronto's tap water is clean enough to drink so most of my plants are fine. The second thing, which is completely an opinion, is that I'm not caught up on leaf perfection. I accept that leaves will not stay perfect forever so when they eventually get a few browned tips, I see it as the marks of having worked hard for the plant (transpiration). So long as I can see that the overall plant is growing, I'm fine with older leaves getting a few browned tips - my peace lily has been growing extremely well over the last 6 years: all of its older leave have a few browned tips but all of its newest leaves are perfect. It's highly possible that different places around the world have very different tap water quality, in which case you would need to evaluate the feasibility of maintaining certain plants.
