Fantastic - so helpful. I love to see good riders showing when things are not going quite perfectly and how they work through them gently in a relaxed way without overstressing the horse. Nicely done!

I really like your riding style. It’s also so refreshing to see an expert rider such as yourself riding with the correct stirrup length, unlike so many others who ride with way too long stirrups and their feet are reaching for the stirrups. Your legs are naturally dropped with your heels down naturally with the correct stirrup length. Your riding style is reminiscent of the great Old Riding Masters of the 19th Century. These giants are not easy to ride, especially as green horses in training, but you handled it very nicely.

Thanks very very much this was so helpful, I think it is really despondent when you are struggling with these probs it’s nice to see everyone has these niggles when teaching a horse a change , also some super ideas as always on how to overcome these problems , I think your big point here is to have control over the canter and it must be active which you could clearly see the difference . Your videos are literally brilliant I cannot express how helpful they are , once again thank you for taking the time to do these 👍

Thank you! Perfect tip! I have PRE who moves a bit different than warmbloods so when I teach him a flying change he tries to escape with twisting his body or make a minisinglechange. I did a counter canter moved his haunches in as you recommended and bingo! he did it👌

I appreciated you rolling back your instruction on how to start the changes with a young horse. Haunches-in at Counter-canter was a real help, as well as, activating the canter prior to asking for it. I noticed your aid for CC, right rein, using your inside leg behind the girth. In your previous video, you talked about Tempi right rein, right leg aid...left rein, left leg aid?? That confuses me. So, with advanced horses...we are introducing new aids for canter for the more advanced Changes? For younger less educated horses, we use the diagonal aids [right leg, left rein] If this is correct, when do we introduce it the more advance tempi aid?

Thank you for this. I'm currently struggling with my mare - who does know how to do changes! But she has decided that left-right change won't be happening. I think I will try this counter-canter exercise with her and see if it helps. I have a dodgy right hip so maybe that isn't helping. Lovely horse, lovely riding btw.

Hello Rob! Would it be helpful to introduce the first few changes on a corner of the school out of counter canter and then, once he has the idea as to what you are asking him for, move to the long side of the school? What do you think?
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Louis well we actually have a rule to not do it in the corner🤪 Because most of the time the horses already turn their shoulders first because of the corner. So the balance wil be more on the inside shoulder what makes it more difficult to change in one time. But for instance when you have a horse who is late in the front it might be useful to do it like that! So yea with every horse it’s a little different! 😎

I wanted to ask the same question!:) I showed a 14.2hh Arabian gelding at 3rd level and my hope is to get him ready for 4th/PSG. He tends to rush after the f-c or he can be late behind sometimes so I tried doing them in the corner from the counter-canter a few times and it seemed to help but I think I may try this exercise (I guess this could cause further issues down the road with straightness with the tempis?). Thanks

Thank you for you great videos. Could you talk a little bit about your seat bones and how you sit in regards to riding the inside or outside seat bone. Do you ride the inside or outside outside hind leg in true canter or do you ride them equal in the middle? Thank you in advance for your reply. I am looking forward to it. I have a very sensitive PRE that reacts to the smales changes in his and my lateral balance.

@@Begijnhoeve_official That's what I have discovered as well. I was curious what you do. By keeping the balance even over both seat bones, the horse can more easily find and maintain his own balance. Thank you so much for your reply.

Great to see this video. I have a young horse turning five. He is huge nearly 18hh and big boned and I am 125 lbs and 5’5”. I bought him at 11 months and never knew he would grow so big. He looks and acts very much like Kane. What I wonder is what age did you put Kane in a double bridle and why? Is he already what we would call third level here on the USA? I have put one of my other horses in a double at five cos he just went better in it. It is a bit different riding a very big horse although he is light to ride and pleasant by nature. Would love to see more of training the younger horse seen as I have two.

Really good video.. in terms of a horse being stiffer on one side, would an outside flexion help with the hind leg change, rather than flexing to match the inside fore..ie does an inside flexion for the change interfer with his balance,,, once he is more supple in balance and understands what’s being asked he will find it easy.. I see him in a field cantering free, when he makes a right turn, he naturally throws his head to the left for balance , whereas as when he canters left, he bends his head left.. naturally, he would do a right flying change with his head to the outside..just a thought
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we many times keep the head a bit to the outside, especially when the horse is late behind! If that goes ok, try to make the horse more and more straight

Thank you so much for sharing this moments with us!😌 This is really helpful. But have you ever had problems with horses above 180? It's just that their tendons suffer more from weight. Have you encountered this? Also, do you guys shoe your horses? Thanking you in anticipation! Have a nice week!

I have an X buggy horse who was told not to canter. He canters now and now is adjustable He used to trot out of canter if I blinked thinking he wasn’t allowed. My problem is getting flying change. He changes by using the tip of his front hoof to change leads. It’s so fast if you blink you miss it. But it’s not correct and of course can’t think about tempis till it’s correct. I’ve never had such a reaction. He’s come along way in his canter work. Half pass schooling pirouettes ect and does all the GP in trot. I’ve fixed others horses in changes up to the ones. I really think it’s a mental challenge for this guy. He’s really trying to work with me but his default is to trot out of canter when he feels he’s wrong From his past being punished for cantering at all as a baby. Any tips ??

@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 3 жыл бұрын
