Proud daily user of i7 2600k here You should also keep in mind that games usually dont use a lot of cores, and cpu usage % is only showing you the average usage per all cores If you try playing half life 2, for example, youre most likely will be bottlenecked by your cpu while its showing very low load (its using 2-3 cores), the more cores idling -- the less load percentage You can set up rivatuner to show the load of each core (its still much harder than that to check how is your cpu keeping up with your gpu, but it still gives you more information about your performance)

But I cranked up all my graphic setting from low to high/ultra and it’s running completely normal now. Before I couldn’t play the game without constant stuttering and the game freezing every 10 seconds. My cpu was bottlenecking at %99 before and now it’s running great

Pairing a strong cpu with a weak gpu makes sense for competitive gaming and other creator tasks that relies way more on the cpu than the gpu but except for those scenarios it's true that it doesnt make much sense

While what you said can limit stutter, it is not ideal because it tanks your fps AND you would still get dips in the frametime graph especially with older graphics cards with low vram. The easiest and most straightforward solution is to monitor the fps you get using your usual low settings and write down the minimum fps value, then cap the framerate to that minimum fps. Capping fps will get you the most stable framtime without losing much fps compared to just cranking up resolution.

One thing to note about your guide. Seems there is a WMI bug in nVidia Container that calls wmi host and basically cpu spikes, causing the bottleneck So check events viewer to make sure this ain't the issue. If it is try removing nvidia experience, sometimes it fixes the issue. Good guide

thanks to your explaination, i can FINALLY play The last of us part 1 remake at almost 60 FPS all the time, when theres no enemys, the game goes at 75 fps, but then drops to like 45-60, wich is WAAAY better than the 25-30 i got most of the time, and that is cause you made me look for the option for the resolution scaling for AMD cards, wich is making a huge difference! I do this method up to this day. I even have a 720p monitor with a Xeon e3 1231 v3 and an RX 580 and would often play at a higher graphics giving more consistent frame times, less stutter and more enjoyable gameplay.

You have a good ear (and good headphones) 😁. I know of the sound issues and I've been working towards improving things for a while now. It's a bit ironic that I often talk about sound while some of my videos suffer quite a bit from sound issues, right? 😂 It has gotten better but I obviously still have things I need to solve. The reasons for the high noise floor/clicks/pops/occasional clipping are a bit more complicated than I initially thought (it's not simply because of a shitty 5$ mic, while I'm not using a Neumann - I do use decent budget gear - any gear would likely suffer from similar problems in my case), and my overall recording setup adds another layer of complexity to the troubleshooting process. Of course it would be easy to just slap an aggressive spectral denoiser in post production and call it a day (I do already denoise certain bits that really jump out, but I'm trying to be conservative about it). But ideally, I'd like to solve it at the source (garbage in/garbage out), and why not, eventually make a guide documenting my troubleshooting process for everyone else to see, as it might help others as well. I'm slowly working my way towards a good overall solution that still works with my setup, so hopefully things will get better soon. Appreciate the kind words and the feedback!

Hello, nice video and interesting topic. I see it in the same way, and this solution is a really good aproach in order to make fps "predictible". Intel present mon is an interesting tool tant give a more "technical" metrics around frame time, 2.0 version introduced the concept of gpu busy vs gpu wait ( cpu bottleneck ) and the approach of decreasing gpu wait is exactly what you explained, increasing graphics, but whit this tool is really straightfoward, looking it in a graph method.

I think depending on the system, and the budget, that sometimes going with a slightly worse GPU for the sake of a better CPU is actually the correct way to go. 1080 and i5 6600k would be worse than a 1070 a 6700k. A 3080 and 5600X would be worse than a 3070 and 5800X3D. Currently I think anybody can just throw in a 7800X3D or 12th gen i7 or newer and any GPU will run fine on it, however my 7800X3D still can't push a 4090 a lot of the time, so I'll be upgrading that before I upgrade my 4090 most likely.

Your tiger eyes are sharp :D And you are technically right, I should have shown the value for graphically intensive tasks, however I think this doesn't impact the contents of the video. The purpose of that beginning shot was to illustrate that the CPU bottleneck is real and likely a cause of the stuttering. While you are right that there are three types of tasks you can pick in this specific calculator, the one I picked showed the median value (in my case, the values were ~22%/~38%/~50%) - and that's why I stuck with it. The median value felt right to illustrate the severity of the bottleneck. But since the video then focuses on the gaming problems that arise from it, I do see why we could say I "used" the calculator wrong. I'll keep this in mind for future videos. Thanks!

using your old GPU for 60FPS or more gaming and upgrading it to a higher tier GPU just to game at lower FPS of 60FPS all the time.. Don't forget the advantage of 144 FPS over 60FPS which is really noticeable specially in FPS gaming that slight advantage to hit your target before your enemy saw you specially in walls or anything blocking the field of view i.e (hiding in a box then going out to take a shot higher FPS will have more advantage. The best option if you are CPU bound is going to 1440p and maxing out every GPU bound setting in the game, if CPU is unlock Overclock it/optimize it or OC your RAM, update your BIOS (free performance i.e. in ryzen 1000-5000 Agesa 1.2.0.7 to 1.2.0.8 = no performance improvement but going to 1.2.0.B will gain 3-5% boost and going to 1.2.0.cc (beta) another 3-5% gain. Updating Windows i.e. win11 21H2 to 22H2 = 3-5% gain then 22H2 to 23H2 3-5% gain and 23h2 to 24H2 (beta) almost no difference, tweaking some windows setting or registry can also increase FPS.. for example in ryzen just by disabling HPET = huge performance inc, disabling MPO fixes stuttering issue (BIOS update also fix this), HDCP disable = reduce latency, inc. 1% lows & fix reduce stuttering, core parking disable = reduce latency & reduce stuttering etc. etc. etc.

WATCH THIS VIDEO! - but in short - Upgrade your CPU - most people are overpaying for GPU while CPU takes the back seat - everything goes through the CPU, your CPU uses RAM mostly - so having Ram speed matching up with CPU speed is IDEAL. CPU is always the FINAL bottleneck doesn't matter if you have 7800x3D - so a complete no CPU bottleneck is when you upgrade CPU with no change in FPS. I have seen atrocity like r5 3600 with 4090 - that thing is good for mid 20xx TOP - I know bc I ran it with 3060 and had to upgrade to r5 5600(budget)

Long story short, adjust graphics to a level, where the gpu is fully loaded. Still stutters? Cap fps lower and lower until stutters go away. When u reach that point the cpu is capable of fully functioning fluid for that game

Hey man! Thank you for watching! Unfortunately I don't own the Quest 2 or any flight sim - so please take this with a grain of salt - but in my limited experience using VR headsets, a high and stable framerate is a must to avoid nausea/headaches. If on a monitor you can easily play a game at a "console" framerate of 30 fps, once you put a VR headset on, you need at least 75 fps, ideally a lot more. This means that the requirements for the hardware driving the headset are pretty high, and if it isn't up to the task, most of the tricks I show in this video won't really help, as they tend to bring the framerate down in favor of a more stable frame time and higher visual quality. But maybe someone with more experience when it comes with the Quest 2/MSFS/DCS can chime in with more details. Hope this helps!

@@dFZGhost Personally I've got a Xeon E3-1230 v5 and a 6650xt as well, same skylake architecture, similar cpu performance, but the GPU is far too strong for the CPU in anything more CPU-Intensive, even on 1440p. If possible do the extra bit and upgrade the mobo and cpu to a newer architecture because unless you're playing 4K or super GPU intensive 1440p Skylake or anything LGA1151 for that matter just won't rlly cut it.

You can build one for less than$200 U.S. Those CPU's would run laps around the weak 6th gen i5, we're talking insanely higher performance for a few more bucks than a 6th gen i5 system would cost. Besides, 6th gen isn't officially supported for windows 11 so in 2025, your system will stop receiving security updates from Microsoft making it vulnerable to cyber attacks.

@@timarc9895 Yeah I seen the i3 12th gen for 74 pounds on Amazon, I was told the i3 12th gen is a pretty good CPU for what it is, Pretty effective for a low end CPU, I used to use an i7 6700k, My first PC, After a Cooler leaked on my motherboard, I had to get an i5 12600k, And being able to pay over 5 payments on Amazon, Have helped me get a PC I can call half decent, Now I got an MSI Z690 Unify motherboard, With a 12gb 3060, 32gb of DDR5 5200MHz ram, And damn sim racing is far better than when I was using the i7 6700k and the 1660 super, And i have also learned over time how to put a PC together, Wit the help of a friend, I am now confident enough to do any upgrades myself, Like the videos people are doing now the PS5 Pro is coming out, People building PC's for the same price as the PS5 pro, Even the used section on Amazon can get you a decent PC for a decent price, I was told the used section on Amazon is pretty darn good too, But yeah even then Amazon got loads of PC offers, I only paid 160 pound for the MSI Z690, In a sale 30% off on Amazon, There is loads of MSI motherboards on sale on Amazon at the moment, But yeah I was told the i3 12th gen is a top low budget CPU, That will give you top gameplay for what it is, And for 74 pounds for an i3 12th gen CPU, If I was doing a PC with the intention of spending as less as possible, Then I would get the i3 12th gen myself, I read it is only 5% difference to an i5 lol, I don't think that is exactly true, lol, Plus do the i3 12th gen use DDR5 ram as well, Coz if it do then yeah the i3 12th gen for 74 pounds is a flipping bargain, lol....

Hitting 99% of GPU load increases input lag, there was some measurements you should have some headroom for GPU too nvidia reflex also acts as a frame limiter in VRR scenario, cutting some frames below max refresh rate to avoid full GPU usage nvidia LLM is useful when your GPU is 100% busy, it doesnt make sense when you are not GPU bottlenecked, its all about render queue depth (that option was initially called "Maximum pre-rendered frames" long time ago, that makes more sense than marketing "low latency mode"). headroom calculation for your frame limiter and refresh rate (e.g. 120hz): 1000ms / 120 hz = 8.333 ms +0.3 ms = 8.63ms 1000ms / 8.63ms = 115.87 fps rounding = 115 set that in RTSS as limit same way 144hz - 138 fps, 165hz - 157 fps etc for AMD cards you should add 1.3 ms instead of 0.3 ms the idea is to avoid preparing and rendering "unnesessary" frames that your system cant handle and draw, reducing overall system load and maintaining smooth frame pacing ingame limiters can be better than external via RTSS or driver smooth gameplay on PC is challenging in some way, depending on your hardware, but not impossible - just needs some time for fine tuning

radeon chill can be a life saver for really bad bottle necking if u have nothing else (undervolting can also probably help a bit but chill is easier and limits fps. also u can select whichever games that u experience tearing in and limit the fps for those specific games)

Seems like adjusting the GPU setting to cap the FPS at something like 60-FPS would work also for pairing it better with an older/slower CPU. Also, keep the monitor at 60Hz in that case. I personally cap my RX 7800 XT GPU FPS in settings to match my FreeSync monitor Hz setting (120/144) so it doesn't run harder or hotter unnecessarily. It's paired with the Ryzen 9 7900 12C/24T CPU, which is basically an ideal match for the RX 7800 XT in terms of neither bottle-necking the other at my preferred resolution of 1440p.

Some games like valheim have glitches (in a snowstorm) that will increase the gpu temps to outrageous levels if you have no fps cap or vsync enabled. I am talking like 20C higher temps

Actually the only ingame settings that really matter are for cpu usage and monitor your minimum fps. Set an fps limiter to the min. And enable vsync (optional). And youre good. If using a high refresh panel just remember if the min fps limiter is below half the refresh rate it will not look good. So tweak the settings u need to atleast reach half the refresh rate. If your min fps is higher than your displays refresh rate just use vsync

Good video, very informative. I have an interesting issue. I have a Ryzen 7 7700x | RTX 4070 12GB | 32GB DDR5 and this is a decent combo on high or ultra settings in most games and I'm usually GPU bound at 99% in Black Ops 6 for example, yet no stutters at 120 fps cap. Then on the other hand I try to play Rust and my gpu will be at like 50 - 60% and CPU will be at 20 - 30% and I'm stuttering constantly dropping down to 70 - 80 fps at times. So idk if this is an AMD problem, but i run 4K resolution on a 1080p 165hz refresh display. And when the resolution above native neither windows nor the gpu control panel allows me to set a custom refreah rate, it remains locked to 165hz. And i would rather have it set to 120hz cause my cpu is a bottleneck in singleplayer games and in some instance it cannot deliver 85fps. When these instances happen and my fps dips below half the refresh rate the game feels laggy even with vsync enabled. Meanwhile on my old gtx 970 card i dont remember being locked out of lower refresh rates while running 4K on the same monitor.

Laptops have one more serious bottleneck - thermals. So getting a good cooling pad may be a nice idea.

Any idea why I cannot alter core voltage, core clock or parameters affecting the fan (power limit and temp limit), nor can I see the Curve Editor in my Dell laptop G5 SE (AMD 4800H, dGPU 5600M). They are greyed out or missing. However, the parameters of the iGPU of the 4800H can be changed. Thanks.

Hi! I have an issue with my Amd 7700x + RTX 4060ti. When I start a game, the GPU start working well with +90% usage, but after 5 minutes, the GPU usage goes down to 20% and the CPU goes to +90% and the FPS go down from 100+ to 15 or lower. How I can fix this and why is happening?? any advice?

Check if gpu overheating temps, and fan profile.

The solution of tweaking settings seems to mitigate the problem, but how can I remove this all together? I have a i7 13700k and a 4090 and I have bad frame spikes in most games. Should I upgrade the cpu? My i7 13700k is already underperforming to begin with so it’s even more of a bottleneck. I really just want a smooth frame time graph. Most people do play in 4k with a 4090, my monitor is 1440p that’s all I currently have

You shouldn’t have any frame spikes with that set up. You’re sure it’s not a network packet loss issue?

@@Chillwaving the problem was motherboard manufacturers ignored intel recommended voltage settings for 13/14th gen CPUs and they actually perform drastically different when you put intel baseline PL1,PL2, and current limits.

@@bes90 mine is just that it reaches 90 to 98 percent usage, and goes from 4.1 ghz to 1.5 ghz making the fps drop at every area :( i dunno how to fix it , otherwise I would get a stable 60-80 fps.

Vsync or setting a fps cap can also fix cpu stutter.

fortnite still stutters even at 60fps cap with performance mode. I'm using an i7 7700k with a 1060 6gb and 16gb of ram. i just don't understand... i get cpu spikes on fortnite even with high performance power plan on a desktop

It's a fortnite problem. Epic's current focus is showcasing the capabilies of the unreal engine using fortnite rather than to optimize it for a wider range of systems, which was what their previous focus was and what got them their huge playerbase.
