All of these rules are meant to be broken. Joker traditionally does not have "compelling motivations" and that's his real draw. He's absolutely nuts or at least his "motivations" are a mystery and should never be what you think they are. When he is at his best, he's a weather system with no more motivations than a storm or deadly virus. Villains can be actually villains of their own stories. They can absolutely despise themselves.

Which iconic Joker stories would you say portray him with no motivations?

@@sinistar99 That doesn't mean that he has NO "compelling motivatations"... that just means that he has given several, and is asking the audience to make up their own mind as to which is the real one.

I think he's telling the audience there is no "there" there. It's like pinning down a quantum superposition. Giving him pinned down motivations is like giving Cthulhu a "health bar." It just doesn't work for me.

Thank you!!! KZbin can be weird with my videos haha. The engagement seems to be good on them so it just depends if the algorithm wants to be nice or not. So glad you liked it!

I don't know where you have been the last 25 years, but that is a very common trope of villains now, to come off as good...with some tragic backstory...a blame on society...and become a villain. I could name more mcu/DC villains that have copy and pasted thus dynamic versus a straight villain. My favorite comic book inspired villain is Jack Nicholson joker. He was bad before his acid bath, and he was bad after. The depth is that he always had a black hole of a heart that no amount of destruction could fill it. Speaking of that johnny Ringo from tombstone is awesome. And similari jimmy Burke in goodfellas also feats the gluttonous need for more not matter what cost. These guys were all villains before and after their "tragic" backstories. Infact they didn't have tragic backstories, they were rotten apples to begin with. I think using 3 comic book villains who all have the same recipie as persuasive argument to convince Hollywood to take notice is too small of a sample. And I think using the "I was once, good but now I am bad because sad reasons" is overdone, especially in the nerd realm of comics and sci-fi. However I like the joker vs batman dynamic and wholeheartedly agree that the villain should have a reflection of the hero in the opposite way. High box office performance is also not an indicator for favored movies. Non of these 3 movies are in the top ten of most bought physical copies, or most streamed online. Endgame is 2nd highest grossing, but that only counts for box office. More people own godfather over this, scene t2 over this, and more copies of frozen or lion king beat these out. Maybe the comic book universe is the only realm you are familiar with and that's why you made this video. If that's the case expand your horizons because tombstone, goodfellas, the godfather, t2, lion king and frozen are all better movies with more compelling villains....however I would choose your movies over some but that's because they are "popcorn movies"....and masterpieces in their own realm, but not in the big scheme of Hollywood.

One of my favourite examples in the "nerd" sphere is Dr Who villain Davros. In Series 9 of the main show they tried this portrayal of young Davros as some innocent child who something must have happened later to make him bad and it just didn't work for me. A number of years before that, though, a separate audio play miniseries was done that also played with the young Davros and his journey as to who he'd become and that worked a lot better because he was never a good person. He was a child with a penchant for cruelty and curiosity towards harming creatures (and then people), then abused positions of power wherever he got them as he became a regarded scientist long before he had the tragedy that left him as we see him in Genesis of the Daleks. What I found fascinating was that they they took literal Space Hitler, and made him a compelling protagonist without ever actually portraying him as sympathetic.

For me a friend ruined marvel by pointing out that they ruin interesting characters by having a interesting idea but cranking it to 11 and making them over step so the heros have a reason to fight them.

These methods are often used to push far right extremist propaganda where the villain is always the one who fights against the status quo and heroes are always ones who maintain it and protect the system, even if said system is inherently corrupt.
