Thank you. I followed your instructions and used a good new Ryobi battery as my power source. Once l had power in the batteries it didn’t charge on the charger at first and the red light kept blinking. The battery felt hot so I put it in the freezer for a minute. Back on the charger now and charging fine! I am so glad I didn’t throw it out. Thank you so much for several fabulous videos.

Okay,, that is cool,, powering a empty ryobi battery from a full one,, is a bit a kick in the @$$ for the battery.. and charging it up a bit slower,, is to be preferred,, the two 9V batteries does it slower,, and in this case that is better. But also happy you safed your battery.

I jam a flat head in and break the pin on the safety screw allowing a normal t10. Pencil lead on contacts will get some batteries accepting juice. Plugging and unplugging from charger ever 3 seconds about 10 times gets some to start. Cell phone charger will charge individual cells. I do a die down on toped up cells. If the bms is bad, keep the battery pack add it in series to another good pack.

@ My PlayHouse I just discovered that I made the same exercis with an RB18L20 battery as you do in your video. But I accidentally discovered a way to revive it without taking it apart. At first you connect a DC source to plus and minus on the battery. A rubber band can be used for this. As shown i the video, using wires with crocodile clips the Ryobi power supply can be used for this. What I discovered was that when I wet my thumb and index finger and held them against the plus and the terminal between plus and minus the charging started. I also tried to replace my fingers with a 150 kOhm resistor and that worked too. I have not figured out if it is safe to replace the resistor with a short. When I found this out the charging was well on its way, but I think it would be sufficient with just a few minutes to reach a sufficient battery voltage to proceed with the Ryobi charger. It seems to me that these Ryobi batteries should shut down with more juice left in them. By the way, many car battery chargers behave in the same way, they refuse to charge a dead battery.

You should have checked each cell voltage, because they will most probably be out of balance. That happen to my ryobi batteries. They were not that low in total voltage, and could be charged with Ryobi charger, but when charged fully they held little charge. This was because couple of cells were lower voltage than others. E.g. some cells would be 4.15V and some 3.4V. So charger would stop when some cell reaches full voltage, and BMS would stop battery usage when one of the cell would reach low voltage. So I used simple USB Li Ion magnetic charger and put it on each low voltage cell and charged them to the same voltage as rest of the cells. Google for "Olight UC" charger to get an idea which charger I am talking about. This makes it easy because it is simple to put charger on the single cell with magnets, without disassembling cells. And this works for any batteries. This way I also fixed Parkside X-Team 20V batteries.

Aldo, the combined voltage were less than 2V. Not saying your point isn't valid in maybe most cases, but here I think the BMS and the cells themselves just discharged the battery slowly during many months of non use.

@@dennisolsson3119 yeah probably you are correct in this case. But after you fully charge them, if total voltage is less than 20.5V you will probably need to balance them. Mine were 18V fully charged, and almost 21V after manual balancing.

I have the exact same 2Amp battery as shown in the video and tried the charging as you showed but the battery pack got real hot after a brief charging time, only got it up to 11 volts. seems like one of the two 3-cell series packs has a bad battery? Charger started blinking green then after a few seconds stopped blinking green. guess I need to disassemble the three in series packs and test each one individually. Do you know how the charger works? There is the plus + and minus - terminals and a 'T' terminal plus two smaller 'T' terminals but only one has power. Does the 'T' stand for Trigger? I also noticed that the voltages are reversed on my fluke meter when I check the voltage from the Intelli-charger on the plus & minus contacts down inside the tunnel of the charger, but it is only around 3.8 volts and not 20 volts, and the 'T' terminals, the center one in the tunnel and one of the two smaller tabs are the same voltage, 3.8volts. So what "wakes" up the charger to output 20 volts and why are the polarities reversed?
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse Жыл бұрын
You probably have to check every cell,, with a volt meter,, and charge them one by one,, or discharge,, if they are to high.

Hi Morten, very nice experimentation with direct linking battery sources... I now have a small question that perhaps you are able to provide some input, suppose in a battery pack, only one of the tacked batteries is found to have low voltage whereas the others are still within decent voltage levels, do I simply just balance them all manually like your experiments in this video, or do I directly link the specific battery thats weak with a fully working single battery... and for safety purposes would I need to desolder/seperate the battery to do so or could I just target the single battery without having to disassemble it off the other connected batteries?
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse 2 жыл бұрын
I would directly charge up the one cell, and put the battery back on the Ryobi charger to let the BMS pcb sort it out.

i think the charger had current limiter. If cell voltage is 1.9v and you try to charge it at 12V i=(12-1.9)/charger resistor. i think you can solve this problem if you chrage it first in half voltage. Let say the bat ratted at 12V, the charger voltage upto 19V. If you use for 6V BAT , you will not need all this bulshit. After first vharge to 6V , use the 12v charger

@@MyPlayHouse you dont test it. bms limit the max current charge. one way to lower the chrage current , is use lower 6V vs 18V. in ryobi had 2 type's of chager 18V / 40V the BMS is in the battery(only on lit-on) , can charge aldo ni_cad bat. i said,without open the BAT case. connect 12V or 6V power supply, after one hour the voltage in cell will be up. how the chrager now it had problem? 1) max current from charger 2) error signal from bat.

@@michaelfischer6984 i agree with you , in bms had current limiter. Then if you charge in lower voltage=lower current. after hour when the voltage get up , you can connect the charger 18V. The problem was when the cell was 1V total and you try charge in 18V. The bms stop the charging.

Hmm, sorry to say, but I think this is below your standard. In principle the same as the previous video, but now toping up with Pb battery and 9v batteries. You know that there is a reason why the battery BMS refuses to charge..... Lithium batteries should never fall below the minimum voltage, although they may take some charge they will not be very good and it is very likely you will need to recycle them soon anyway.....

I have done quite a bit of charging up and down 18650 cells,, way over 1000,, and often a battery can be at 100mV,, and it can still be charge up, and tested it will still have good capacity. bight have been a 2500mAh, and now it will be a 2200-2400mAh. Still a good battery.

@@MyPlayHouse I agree with your statement, as I have also salvaged over a thousand "low voltage" 18650 cells. The only thing that I would do differently is I would recommend that you charge the cells MUCH SLOWER. There are TP4056 modules specifically made for 18650 lithium cells. These modules are internally programmed to automatically drop the current down to 100mA until the cell voltage reaches about 2.90 Volts. At 2.90 Volts, it will drop out of "trickle charge" mode and kick up to a higher current that you can easily select via one resistor. (I use a 10k pot in series with a 1.2K resistor to allow for a wide range of 50mA to 1000mA.) The TP4056 will continue to charge from 2.90 Volts up to 4.10 Volts at the resistor-selected constant-current. (e.g. 10Kohms = 130mA, 5Kohms = 250mA, 1.66Kohms = 700mA, 1.2Kohms = 1000mA. ) From 4.10 Volts up to 4.20 Volts it switches to Constant Voltage mode and you'll see the current slowly taper off. Tip#1: Here's my point: The SLOWER you charge them, the more likely they will be "good" cells again. Tip #2: For the very first charge cycle, use the TP4056 module set at only 200mA, but don't charge all the way to 4.20 Volts! Only go up to 3.90 Volts. Then discharge the cell at a low rate (approximately 500mA) until the cell is down to 3.30 Volts.(That's basically "empty".) Now, charge it back up all the way to 4.20 Volts at 500mA rate using the TP4056 again. Now your cell should be fine. Tip #3: If you rush this process, the overall capacity suffers. (i.e. A 3000mAh cell ends up at 2200mAh instead of 2800mAh because the first charge was too fast.) Tip#4: During the charging process, periodically check the cell temperature with your fingers or the back of your hand. It's ok to be slightly warm, however, if the cell is HOT, discontinue charging and recycle the cell. The cells used in cordless tools should never get super hot at only 500mA charge or discharge rate. (They are typically high current cells, capable of discharging at a 10A to 20A rate!) If one of these cells is getting hot at 500mA charge rate, then something is chemically wrong internally and it will never be a "good" cell again. Tip #5: If you have the ability to test internal resistance, you'd likely find that the Hot cell's internal resistance is probably higher than the spec sheet shows for a new cell. Sorry, not safe to use this cell if it's getting hot. I should point out that a high internal resistance doesn't ALWAYS lead to a hot cell during charging/discharging. As long as the cell's temperature is comparable to other, known good cells... you can continue to use it in other projects that don't require high discharge rates. (Cordless tools typically need high current cells. This is known as the "C" rating.) Tip #6: Another good test is the self-discharge rate of the cell. If the cell is losing voltage just sitting on a bench, you may find that the self-discharge rate is fairly high. That's another sign that this cell has been used "hard". If you don't have the specialty equipment to measure self-discharge, you can simply charge the cell up to 4.20Volts, set it aside on your bench, then write down the voltage of that cell once a day for about 2-3 weeks. If it drops from 4.20V down to 3.85V (or lower) in 3 weeks of sitting on a bench, it's because the cell has deteriorated internally and can never be fixed. The good news is you can still use the cell in other projects that don't depend on low self-discharge. For example: a solar light that charges the 18650 up to "full" everyday wouldn't even notice if you used a high self-discharging cell. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them!!!
