How to fix the "there was a problem sending the command to the program" Excel error.

THANK YOU!!! I tried every "fix" suggested by Microsoft, and none worked. I had the latest version, I did the online repair, I disabled dde in the excel options, etc. The registry key change works great. At first I did not add a space between /e and "%1", and it had some new errors (couldn't find things). Once I entered the string correctly, problem solved. You are a genius!

Sergiops - YOU'RE THE MAN!!!! After numerous attempts to fix this annoying problem, the registry fix approach did the trick! Many thanks to you (and prashanth kumar for the VERY helpful hint to remove the extraneous non default command keys.) You guys are what make the internet great. MSoft, as usual, continues to suck.

It is fixed! Thank you. One thing to add, once I restarted I still got the error. To change which program to open with, all I had to do was open properties and choose Excel from there (you may have to use browse to find it since I did). I had to do this for .xls and .xlsx separately

For macro enabled (xlsm), just find the folder and repeat the same steps from the video. It's HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.SheetMacroEnabled.12\shell\open\command

I had an additional key in .8 and .12 which i deleted. I think this may had been causing the issue. Thanks for the assistance!

Are you missing a quotes " because the original key opens with a quote like so - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE" /dde. And then you remove the last quote to add /e "%1%" like so - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE /e "%1". Which now leaves the command with a open quote do I just add this quote to the end of the command?

Alicia Vaca Cortés I'm sorry this didn't work for you. I have not experienced that problem ever gain. If I were you, I would try a system restore in Windows, to go back in time in your system when the error was not present. If this doesn't work either, un-install and re-install the application, or as a final radical solution, you could do a clean install of Windows. Good luck.

FINALLY got it. ok Tried soo many things first -What I tried and didn't work 1) Unchecking the Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) in Excel. 2) Editing the Registry didn't work for me & tried multiple online version of e"%1" trick. read it works for XP and older windows. 3) Tried enabling macros & VBA in Trust Center in Excel options. 4) ucheck "Microsoft Office Documents that are from or link to suspicious websites." in Excel privacy options. ~~~~~~What did work for me~~~~ 1) Open Excel -> File-> Options-> Addins-> Go 2) Check boxes to enable: 2.1) Analysis ToolPak 2.2) Analysis ToolPack - VBA 3) Click OK 4) Save and close Excel. It worked for me then. I work with a bunch of MACROS (VBA) so it might have been the issue. Interestingly it also fixed excel files that had no MACROS too. Don't really understand why but it worked. FYI I have Win 7 (64bit) & Office 2010 Pro

This also might help you: This was in my case: In registry there should be only the default command. Delete all other keys (command key was there in my case so i deleted it). and replace /dde with /e and %1 as shown in the video. Export(backup) any key before deleting if you are unsure of success.
