From the chart you posted @2:03, you checked continuity in the trailer plug from the Tail/Running Lights to the Trailer Brakes. You didn't put the probe into the Ground, which would have been the slot at 5 o'clock. You did 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock, right? @3:05 Clearly you found the problem, but that exercise didn't tell you what you thought it did. I'm in the middle of trying to find my own trailer issues, so I'm following your instructions closely. Thanks for the video. When I check mine, I get continuity from the running lights to the ground AND from the running lights to the trailer brakes.
@FarmDad4 жыл бұрын
I think you are correct, it looks like I probed the wrong spot when I did it on camera. I bet I did it right though when i was testing before I started filming.
@jayjoans1864 жыл бұрын
@@FarmDad thanks, strangely there's a circuit from running lights to trailer brakes though, any idea why that is? Then when you found the bad wire and fixed it, that circuit was broken. I have the same thing you did, and I'm hoping there's a hint there for where I should be looking. The problem is in my travel trailer, so all the wires are hidden away, I can't see them like you can on your flatbed..

I have similar issues with truck fuse blowing, continuity between ground to tail light pins and trailer brake to ground pins in trailer plug. Looking for a break in the tail light wires is a bear! Here’s what’s got me scratching my head: I used some spare wires to connect tail light pin to positive battery terminal and a wire from ground pin to negative battery terminal and it all worked. So it appears trailer wiring is fine but truck is the problem? Any ideas?

@@oregonlums try the continuity test with the multimeter on the vehicle side of the plug, that will tell you if its the vehicle and not the trailer

@@FarmDad Correct me if I'm wrong, but your method for finding a short doesn't work for clearance lights? Specifically clearance lights that only have one wire going to them. This did help me to find a short on my tail lights so for that I thank you.

Awesome, this is exactly what I need. My flatbed running lights don't work when hooked up to any of my three trucks. Since it acts the same on all three trucks, I know the trailer is bad. This will help me troubleshoot the wires

I have continuity with all my pins on my trailer 7 pin connector. Does that mean I have shorts in all wires?? Also when I test for continuity with my lights off on my truck plug there is continuity does that mean I have a short on my truck side also??
@johnkessock97849 ай бұрын
that's because you could measure continuity through your bulbs. need to remove all your bulbs, for his test to work, maybe not with LED bulbs ( light emitting diode) . they will only show continuity one way.

Thank you so much buddy! This helped me fix my new Maxx-D roll off dumpster trailer. One of the side marker lights had unplugged and they had a light connector in the middle of the frame where no lights are. So it kept touching metal and shorting out I believe.

You should always read continuity across the positive side of the light circuit and the ground , If you do not you have an open circuit and the light would not work. You have to disconnect the wiring to the light or remove all the bulbs and than test the positive wire to the ground and if you have continuity you have a short in that wire.

Not sure why but you were checking tail/running lights to brake lights on the trailer continuity test and you were getting a beep, which you shouldn’t have. You must have had something more going on there.

Purchased a landscape trailer from Carson trailers and got my hitch mount and Wiring installation from uhaul . Carson Trailer keeps blaming uhaul saying its their wiring and uhaul is saying it’s the trailer. So uhaul connected two other trailers to my car and the all the lights work just fine sooo it is the trailer it I can get those idiots to realize that and the lights like the trailer and axels have warranty but they won’t help me. I will try this tomorrow morning thank you.

Many trailers have earth connections directly to the individual components in the light cluster, all coming back to the earth pin in the plug. The multimeter will supply a current through the component (brake light or whatever) back to earth. There will be a beep on all circuits under these circumstances, and the problem will not be found...
