How to fix water coming up through your sink from the washing/laundry machine/dishwasher.

Thank you for that. It's interesting, though my pipe that goes away is abive the shelf? About 3 inches from the bottom of the sink?? Horizontal out to the front wall. No a good down flow at all. We do have trouble with blockages well I thought. Just bought some more unblocker! No I see why.. I'll have a look, if not I will phone my housing association 👍

Mine was coming up my sink with washing machine and dishwasher! I found the blockage and cleared it! Was disgusting but I did it and was very pleased with myself! The nightmare came when putting it all back together! I thought I'd taken note but not well enough 😬

great video. Im in a first floor flat with a small kitchen and a tiny bathroom with separate toilet room. The kitchen you can just about swing a cat, but the toilet and bathroom are kind of walk-in-reverse-out size.. As you can imagine, pipe fittings are very tight. Cupboard space has always been minimal, but then the council came in wanting to move my gas meter from the big cupboard near the front door into the kitchen under the sink... This made things even worse and I refused to allow it. Instead I made them put the gas meter in the dead space between the unit and the washing machine ;) Anyways, I also have the issue that the bath takes about an hour to drain fully, and we think this is due to the fact the pipes are not on any realistic downward gradient . TBH its a council flat, so Im guessing the plumbing was done on a generic budget back in the 50s when they were built :(

I live on a 1st floor flat and was having slow draining water and it eventually got worse that it began going into the washing machine. Landlord came- checked the ubend which was clear and then starting prodding towards the wall. It didn't make much of a difference and it was still happening after he had finished. I was so stressed out I call the plumbers. They found the blockage was in a 4mm pipe which apparently goes up hill (bad plumbing)- plumber was fuming lol. Wrote a report and told me to hand it to the landlord. It was worth the cost just to hear the vortex of the water draining! It was a beautiful moment lol.

Yes that can happen but I do not like to leave an open end for the washing machine pipe to sit in as I would then have to trap the pipe , plus if you get a block it would come up the open pipe and flood. I do not find it sucks the trap empty on the sink but if it does start to do that I will replace the sink trap with a symphonic one. Regards al.

The sink waste is blocking after a couple of years use. A pressure gun will clear it. Check out my video on pressure guns. There cheap and reliable.

Ok thanks for that. I tried a plunger this morning. Then that didn't work so I tried bleach. I did another load in the washing machine, the sink filled up, a load of debris came into the sink and the water went away. Think it's cleared the blockage :)

Did you figure out what was causing your draining issue? After 20 yrs of living in the same house, our washing machine started backing up into the bathroom sink. We've had rotorooter out about 4 times and my husband has snaked it twice. It works for a LITTLE while then starts backing up again. I could have a busted pipe under our slab but don't have the typical symptoms (no noises, no floor issues but do get flying ants twice per year that come up through the sink).

Old building, 1950. The apartment unit is on the ground floor basement. Across the hallway is the tenant's Coin-Laundry machines room. For years, the suds/detergents and sometimes soapy water from the tenant's (Coin Laundry Washers room) overflows in my kitchen sink. I don't have a washing machine in my apartment, it's not allowed. They've done a small plumbing fix to it 10 years ago, but it still happens sometimes. How much money are they trying to save for the 100% solution repair? $1000 - $3000? I don't know. Canada

Stick a cheap non return valve it will stop it for good.

Shouldn't you be putting some sort of anti sypon valve on there? - thats what the sink serves as also... I did have this problem, and solved it by making the down pipe lower than the washer inlet... - was far less faff than all this, and there was no worry about the syphon effect draining the ubend... you can get extendable sink ubends which also make it far easier (cut the pipe about three to five inches (the one that goes into the stack, then add an extension tube onto the sink...

Hi there. Just a question, don't you run the risk of the washing machine water when it's on spin and hence coming out fast siphoning the trap water out from your sink trap? That's normally why a direct connection is the sink side of the trap?

Sewage will smell through the washing machine when it’s not in use if you run a separate waste for the washing machine it should have its own trap 👍

I had this problem. I think it was caused by me flushing coffee dregs from my espresso machine down the sink. They must have built up down there, and must have clogged the waste tube... I assumed coffee dregs were easily wasted away through the sink hole, but looks like I was wrong

My neighbors wash dish machine pours all the washing in my sink. One neighbor is upstairs on the side behind my sinks, and the another neighbor dowstairs on the side behind my sinks. I live downstairs. I had many overflowing their dirty in my sink, on the floor, what really bothers me is the smell of the soap of their machine that stays in my sink for several days. I spoke to the bldg staff, they come here, and problems repeats. I can the smell travels to my bedroom door. Today I informed again the staff and this time I asked them "can you halt the machines until the pipes are fixed?". I am so tired of wasting my water to clean their mass, my floor is cracked due to the flood, it's the 4th time I had flood in my sink. Lost rugs, I had to clean and remove the water from the floor and the sinks. I decided to user stopper to cover the hole of the sinks when I am not using to prevent their sudden water coming to my sink, but it does not work. The high volume and speed of the water from their machine push the lid up and the water invades my sink again. I even poured strong liquid coffee to try to remove the smell. It contaminates everything the smell. It nauseates me. It's waste smell, it's chemical smell from the soap they use in the machine. One of the flood I had in my kitchen the smell was unique, very nausating, I could not describe, I never smelled this smell, I can't describe. Maybe it's the mixture of the soap smell with the grease coming from neighbors machine and their sinks. You could feel the grease on kitchen floor, just one smear, and the smell lings. Why on earth, a bldg shares same pipe between neighbors.

Can I ask I've had a new kitchen new appliances so new pipes and connection. The kitchen fitter connected the washing machine. My last one an old one had 2 pipes hot and cold the new one only has one NOT that I understand any of this however, my washing machine keeps filling up I've noticed this happens when we do a lot of dishes in the sink it will later fill up. I thought the machine was faulty was upset as I'd bought for the 1st time a beko. Called them out they said they think plumbing fault. The kitchen guys says it's fine. You're waste pipe is running directly down, what about if the waste pipe is running horizontal and only goes down once its through the wall?

The waste is blocked between your washing machine waste and the bath trap pipe. Forcing water into the bath. More than likely a tee piece is blocked.

The trap is about stopping the gasses (hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides). You really don't want those gasses seeping through your washing machine and into your house...

John Kirk although it's advisable to install a trap on a washing machine waste outlet, it's not always necessary to have one. Most if not all modern machines have a rubber formed trap at the lowest point. This is shaped like a box with two pipes moulded to it.
