Hey! I rescued a dead B350 board that I got for about $20 USD with a CH341A programmer, a level converter (3.3 V to 1.8V), and a SOIC clip. Sometimes you have to plug the PSU to the board to flash it properly - the standby power of the PSU is enough to power some subsystems of the board to ensure that the programmer isn't powering them (and lowering it's voltage). That may be causing your finicky connection issues.

Those Gigabyte boards are really easy to get working after a bad flash. You just need to short the pins on the second bios chip and it writes that bios to the original. Think it's pin 1 and pin 6.
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
The cheapness of the clamp is not an issue, it could be 100 times more expensive and it wouldn't work any better, it's trying to solve an impossible problem. Attaching them to the chip is certainly a skill in itself, it needs a good bit of practice. Most repair shops actually avoid using any friction clamping on SOIC chips, they solder the chip to the adapter board to program it, desolder it from that and solder onto the mainboard, and they don't generally reuse chips that came on the board, because that's enough thermal stress for one chip. The one you're about to order is for DIP chips, not SOIC, you can't use it for your purpose.
@amshermansen6 жыл бұрын
Yet he did. Feel free to offer better alternatives.
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
@@amshermansen just in case you misunderstood me: unfortunately the original $2 clamp he used in this video is the best noninvasive attachment device, you can't pay your way out of the issue that a reliable way to attach to an SOIC from the top hasn't been invented. If you're concerned about manufacturing quality, you can buy Pomona, but after 2-3 attachment attempts by a hamfisted bloke they become pretty equivalent in quality :D The white clamp that he now ordered hoping that it's better can't be used, it's for DIP with 2.54mm pin spacing, but the chips you find on the boards have 1.27mm pin spacing. As for programmer, the $40 one that he used and the $2 CH341 are equivalent enough for serial chips, but the more expensive one will also do parallel ROM chips that have pretty much died out.
@andljoy6 жыл бұрын
I agree , just de-solder it , its honestly not that hard
@MetalMasterdom6 жыл бұрын
@@amshermansen Get on ebay and search for SOIC8 SOP8 Spring Loaded Pogo Pin Adapter. The cheap ones are very good quality. But appear to be spaced for the "non-wide" 150mil chips. It's almost impossible to get the pins to connect properly on a 209mil chip. But, if you're crafty, you can modify it so it'll work just fine on the wider chips.
@MetalMasterdom6 жыл бұрын
There's no need to solder the chip to the adapter board. You can clamp it to the board(I've used a rubber band successfully). Or you can buy a cheap SOIC8 SOP8 to DIP8 adapter socket that plugs into the programmer. It's got a spring loaded mechanism that clamps down on the legs of the chip for programming. It's the best method for offboard programming by far(except DIP chips, which don't require anything but the programmer). And you can get them for any size/type of chip. And...BTW...you're right...the clips are garbage. All of them.

@MFG90006 жыл бұрын
Bryan, GIGABYTE motherboards with Dual BIOS often runs into this issue where the primary BIOS is corrupted and you need to kick start the BIOS recovery process. You'll know this is the case when you'll see your system boot looping infinitely, and at times there is a POST but it soon restarts thereafter. To kick start the BIOS recovery on GIGABYTE motherboards with Dual BIOS, hold down the Power and reset button at the same time, and flip the PSU switch on. You'll see that your system will receive power, and the fans will spin up, then shut down as it would while in a boot loop. Without letting to of the power and reset button, turn the PSU switch off, and wait for 10~12 seconds. Turn the PSU on again to power up the system. Don't let go of the Power and reset button yet. Let the system turn on, and go off by itself. Turn the PSU switch off. Wait for 10~12 seconds. Now turn the PSU switch on again. Let the fans spin up, and then shut down. Now turn the PSU switch off, and finally, let go of the power and reset button. Now turn the system on as you'd normally, and wait a couple of boot loops. You'll eventually be greeted by a POST window saying that the Primary BIOS has become corrupted and is being flashed by the recovery BIOS. I hope this will help some unfortunate GIGABYTE motherboard owner out in the future who doesn't have access to an EEPROM flasher.

You can also just switch to the backup-BIOS, go into Q-Flash, set the switch to main-BIOS and flash it. Board should be in single-BIOS mode for this so it doesnt try to flash itself while you are flashing, which bircks the board completely. In the case both main and backup BIOS are corrupted only an EEPROM-flasher may help.

With the CH341A you need to be careful, there are a few versions including one that is built wrong and shoves 5V instead of 3.3V which is potentially chip killing, IIRC the green pcb version. The one I've got (black PCB) works fine but others who flash custom laptop BIOSes have had issues with it and swear by others such as the skypro with pomona clip. That clip looks just like mine and yes sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good connection. I originally used these to save a $500 laptop motherboard and have used it 1000x since to flash custom laptop GPU vBIOS (because nvflash won't work with unsigned vbios with pascal), increasing power limit from 115W to 200W on MSI MXM 1070s and putting them in a Clevo 2012 Ivy Bridge laptop, Clevo 1080s from 190W to 275W, etc.

A fiberglass scratch brush pen may help provide better contact, as the bios legs are more likely to have corrosion/debris rather than the gold plated jaw pins, unless the plastic housings of the jaws themselves are interfering.
@ChesterKN6 жыл бұрын
Problems with programming may not come from the clip itself (if it's resonable quality ofc) but from programming in circuit. Programming or even reading in circuit often doesn't work. A few days ago a client brought me car radio for decoding. Car radios can usually be read using a clip just like the one in this video, but not this time. I tried reading it a few times and then I just desoldered it and it worked like a charm on the first try. If you have at least a few motherboards that require a bios flash, you may want to buy a soldering station. Simple 2in1 station is more than enough for this kind of job. Soldering EEPROMs may look difficult but I assure you it's really easy. I myself have learned soldering SMDs from youtube videos. I'm sure you have some hardware that you can practise on.
@ashleylycan93356 жыл бұрын
I have a CH341A black version, and I've never had a problem with it, it flashed bioses for some LGA 775 boards i had lying around without any issues, the software for it is a bit more difficult to find, the newer version that is, but you can find it in about 10 mins of searching. Its only downsides are the lack of the "claw" for SMD bios chips(or at least the model i got) , tho it does include a little pcb for those, but u need to desolder it from the motherboard, requiring soldering skills, and the fact that it can only flash DIP 8 packaged bios chips and EEPROMs without soldering stuff. But appart from that, its a really handy any easy to use device...

Regarding the finnicky clips/jaws, I've had 2 sets of the 341A programmer and the first one came with clips that worked flawlessly on the half dozen BIOS chips I've tried. The 2nd set programmer came with the most finnicky clips ever, although the clips looked visually identical to the first set, it was literally a nightmare to get them pretty much on any BIOS chip. Never the less, on any BIOS that I've managed to get good contact, flashing on it was a breeze. As a side note: do be careful with the 341A programmer, they can stop functioning if they get a high surge. In my excitement, I turned on the a PC that I flashed on to, while the jaws were still connected to the BIOS chip, not only did that instantly kill the 341A Bios programmer, but somehow it also killed the onboard audio on the motherboard that the CH341A was connected to!

Bought the same type of kit the clip that went on to the bios chip was absolutely useless. Ened up buying a new motherboard save me time and money. Don't bother with the soldering iron and taking the chip out the heat from the iron will break the chip.
