You can also easily remove the valves from the tappits by banging them (valve to bottom) on a block of wood. They'll come right out And you want to use some brake clean, free up those little check balls. 90% of time the failure is caused by grit preventing ball from seating.

Has the ticking come back? Or is it still silent?
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 9 жыл бұрын
So the ticking only comes back after I run the car hard and shut it off back in grid. It ticks for a few seconds on restart. I am using Rotella T5 and I think I'll try T6 synthetic the next few oil changes and see what happens. Still much better then the 10mins of ticking the car would normally do.

You have to buy a new cam also. Because the old lifters and old camshaft are worn in together. If you throw in new lifters with the old camshaft, you end up flattening out the cam lobes and develop a grove in the lifters.

Ive managed to clean 2 sets of these now, the first time i didnt dismantle that other bit which you mentioned, with the check ball in it. I installed them and the ticking was still there, i think 1 or 2 lifters must of had a bit of crap in that bit. Second set i done i stripped right down, took that cap off which revels the check ball and a tiny spring, be careful not to lose them. Ive installed that set in my car and they sound sweet as, engine has never sounded so smooth. Cheers for this vid anyway, i wouldnt of known where to start without it.

Year later, still tick free, never known the engine to be so quiet. Before i would shut the engine off when warm like to run into a shop quick and start it up a few mins later and the ticking would be quiet bad for a while, i dont get any of that either. All fine and dandy.

Don't know how it sounded before, but that's silent! Would you say it's worth the time rather than buying a new lifter set?
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 7 жыл бұрын
It sort of depends. This car is something I get to play around with on the weekends. If I depended on it for a daily I would probably just buy a set and go. I often find that I have more time than money, so I often just jump into stuff like this. I think it gives a better understanding of how/why things are designed and how they work within the system. If that type of thing doesn't appeal to you, then purchase a set.

Well, I am in the middle of an engine rebuild. I hate buying new parts if I can fix them myself, and my ticking isn't very bad. I love taking things apart to see how they work. It makes it easier to understand what went wrong when it does. Is your engine ticking again?

Great video. I would have bought new lifters though. That is way too much work to reinstall the little trouble makers. Sometimes after market part makers will solve these issues before making their replacement parts. Never buy the factory parts, some people say they started ticking before 50k miles, but Mazda would not cover them just because of noise.
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 7 жыл бұрын
John S thanks for liking the video. The older I get the more I notice there are people with money and people with time. I agree that one would be better off buying new but, if you are one of the more fortunate to have more time than money, this is a worthwhile endeavor. You can find replacement Kia lifters on rockauto for about $120, which is about the cheapest I have found.

Hey, does it still tick after coming off the track? my e36 m52b28 ticks like mad after coming of the track, 10mins on the freeway and the tick goes away.
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 8 жыл бұрын
It does tick every now and then. I was running some Redline 10w30 and it would tick pretty bad after hard use. I went to 5w40 Rotella T6 and it's drastically reduced the ticking. Cleaning cleared up the tick I had almost all the time but going to the T6 really helped under hard use.

After separating the inside on a cub lifter , put them sigle vise in diesel oil in a ultra sonic bath. important is that you watch it. because you should not use combustible liquids with a ultra sonic cleaner, because it warmsup I did, but i watsched it . and once it is getting to hot i stopped and waited. They must be either single vise cleaned or in a plastic cage so they cannot touch each other. because they will destroy it it selfe while touching in a ultra sonic bath

I think its a dead lifter or a few of them. I might try to do the ATF engine flush and see if that works, if not then I guess I need to but some new lifters or sell my car :/
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 8 жыл бұрын
+RideWithTy you should try the ATF flush and see if it works. You should be able to take the valve cover off the car and see the dead lifter(s). Take off the valve cover, rotate the engine with by hand and look for the lifter that doesn't move along the cam lobe.

Is it not the other way round pal to take of cam shaft off you work from inside out and to take it of it's from the outside in I'm sure that's right !!;;

You said take it "of" in both of your suggestions so I have no idea what you are actually trying to say. Either way you should always refer to the original manual as I'm sure it's not a one size fits all for every overhead cam motor. This is a general guide from a dude on KZbin.

@CodyYankey

Did you let it run for ~10mins before you turned it off? They were all collapsed after you cleaned them, that is the design of a hydraulic lifter. They use engine oil as the hydraulic fluid so they need to "refill" themselves. Glad new lifters worked out for you.
@axenz1
@axenz1 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I did. its become intermittent sound ticking. I've warming up until the fan on and drive a week. lastly I replace with new one and all ok, When I measure the length old one with the new one , old one missing 1 mm

@CodyYankey

Remove all the cam caps under the valve cover and it will come off. There is a torque order to it though. I go over it a bit in the video, just be sure you have the manual with you so you know the torque order.

@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how you would be able to clean them without taking them apart. There is a ball on a check valve that won't let you get fluid past without very high pressure. I think you should let it run, make sure you have oil in the car. Mine was very noisy for the first 10mins or so.

Apart from the minor hiccups, it was an easy to understand tutorial. Question, what viscosity grade oil did you use to soak the lifters in? Keep up the good work.
@CodyYankey
@CodyYankey 9 жыл бұрын
Damnesia Thanks for the kind words, still a learning curve on the camera usage and proper use of terms but I get better with every video. So I soaked them in the same oil that I run in the car, 10w30 Rotella T5. T6 is better, but it's also expensive. It is a really durable oil and handles the high RPM and heat, when I race the car, well. I also use this oil in my Subaru and it really cleans up the lifter tick and piston slap on cold starts.
