That's all we used back in the 70's with our Johnson outboards. When you consider they were run every day including holidays ya never got more than a year or two out of them. That was when I was in the Coast Guard so a personal fishing boat is way different. Great video Eric.

Great video, by the way, and thank you! The comment to run it out of gas was intended to *add to* the helpful information in the video. After a boater flushes the motor, they're right there, running the engine, so running the engine out of fuel, is the next logical thing to do before putting the boat and motor away until next use. This clears gas out of the carb and prevents the carb (jets especially,with their small openings) from getting crudded up from gas that sits in it.

Hey thank you so much for posting the video. my mercruiser was overheating to 200 and after seeing your video, I got some simple green, put a litlle in the intake hose along with a little vinegar and salt away,and lime away. boy, it unclogged the motor to run cool, now it runs at 165-70. I know i used a little too many liquids, but the mechanic wanted $480 !!! my thermostat was new, and i had changed the impeller before,so those weren't the reason. you saved the day. thank you
@Fireship1
@Fireship1 8 жыл бұрын
When I/O's start to run hot and the thermostat and impeller have been replaced your usually looking at a new set of manifolds and risers. That is if you are raw water cooled.
@elimonjal
@elimonjal 8 жыл бұрын
yes, i have heard that. how can you tell if a manifold or riser is bad?
@Fireship1
@Fireship1 8 жыл бұрын
+elimonjal a rule of thumb is when engine is warmed up and at idle you should be able to comfortably hold your hand on the risers and manifold. If it's too hot to touch there is likely significant metal corrosion inside. That's when I Usually pull the risers and look to see how much corrosion we're dealing with. If the manifolds rot out the result is water dumping into your cylinders. This will likely cause hydro lock and could possibly ruin your engine.
@elimonjal
@elimonjal 8 жыл бұрын
that is exactly what happened to my engine, it got hydro lock. I foundo water inside engine, so i got a new engine, but not the manifolds or risers, i still don't know if they are ok. i did a acid wash and i don' know if that is sufficient.

I'm a fisherman from Hawaii and the best product to run thru your engine is " Salt Away" is dissolves the salt and it great to clean your whole boat and gear with. I do believe that running your motor in a barrel is great bc it can suck as much water it wants to, instead of those suction cup things. Coming from Hawaii we need to deal with things like even salt air that can destroy radiators on your can just parking it at the boat ramp. Salt Away is a good product that I exclusively use. The sell a a product that's like a fertilizer that connects to the end of your hose, giving it the right mixture to clean any surface affected by salt.

Been watching IV for years and this is my first comment because i agree with him 99% of the time on guns.From a guy that worked at a very big marina in Cape Cod for 30 years and owned outboards and inboards since I was 12( i'm 70) .I don't see the point of the soap of any type and would be leary of anything that wasn't tested to see what it does to rubber seals, aluminum and plastics used in our motors. I Do know the pink antifreeze used in RV water supplies will not harm anything, it includes anti corrosives and water pump lubes, and you can leave it in all winter to prevent freeze ups. Don't use the green stuff if you like yer cat !!!

Simple Green regular corrodes aluminum. There is a blue container Simple Green Extreme that is made for aircraft and won’t corrode. You’re probably diluting it enough not to be a problem but still probably worth making that change. Saw a guy do some serious damage to his aircraft with regular simple green

Salt dissolves in fresh water, so earmuffs with cycling fresh water would be a good start. Sea water is basic and salt is neutral, so using soap or ammonium (which is also basic) would not be my first choice. Adding vinegar to water in the bucket would drive the PH down and remove salt spots if they're a concern.
@AmericanConstellation
@AmericanConstellation 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Also...put some dawn soap in there too....It really cleans the motor out...Also, if you are adjusting the engine idle, you'll want to do that while the engine is in some water, under pressure.

Hey there’s a cat fish in your boat. I’ve always used a 100 gallon Rubbermaid water trough to flush, but have never put anything in the water like detergent. Probably wouldn’t hurt to add a drop of Dawn. I always run it in the trough for 15 to 20 minutes while washing the boat until the engine warms up. My mechanic told me you can’t beat this method as it gets more water this way than through the muffs. I have a new Suzuki 250 and it has a hose hook up that makes it easy, but I still always use my trough and I see no reason to change it.

On all of our previous smaller engines, we have always used a clothes detergent such as TIDE. This detergent not only cleans the water passages, removes salt and corrosion build-up, IT ALSO LUBRICATES the rubber impeller and other rubber components which Simple Green DOES NOT!!!

Some Honda’s have a below the activation plate water intake. I think this one doesn’t because water was able to stream out without the use of a bucket. If you do have the lower water intake you can put tape over it if you’re just using muffs.

I run my 50 horse Yamaha in the Indian river, which is considered salt water. About every three or four months, I fill a 100 gallon tub with water and add about 6 gallons of vinegar and several good squirt of Dawn dish detergent, cranking my motor and letting it run for about 20 minutes at 1500 RPMs. It seems to eat all deposits from the water, jacket and thermostat housing, then I empty the tub and flush with regular fresh water. What do you think about that???
@ToMaHawKfilmsPS3
@ToMaHawKfilmsPS3 10 жыл бұрын
Running it on just the muffs and a hose works fine, as long as you run it long enough for the thermostat to open and flush the whole system. The Simple Green is a good idea, But maybe a bit overkill. Doing that on your last trip before you winterize would be a great idea.
@samhaveaguess4284
@samhaveaguess4284 6 жыл бұрын
Quite a few boat mechics have all told me never run your motor to long with the muffs as your thermostat will never op properly as it requires back pressure for it to function correctly! !! I usually just give it a good long flush in the bucket with just water and the water constantly being wahsed I out as it goes (( leave the tap running))

On bigger Honda’s there is not enough water supplied through the muffs to keep the engine from overheating. The container is the only reliable method to properly flush the motor. I am speaking from experience.

when you rebuild the water pump impeller you use a touch of grease where it has a rubber to metal contact to enhance seal and help prevent instant ruin if it run without water. this greased rubber impeller is what is pushing all the water up.

10% apple cider vinegar solution is the best. Makes the salt deposits dissolve and will not hurt the metal. Can flush with clean water after if desired. On my Mercruiser I-O the impeller on the water pump is flexible rubber and flexes on every rotation due to being mounted off- center in the water pump housing. Maybe this is typical for all impellers? 10 seconds without water and it burns up. Then you have no water being pumped through your engine which leads to overheating and engine damage. Vinegar is the best corroded metal restoration next to electrolysis. Just some thoughts.
