You know, sometimes I think I have been fishing a long time and know how to catch fish, but every time I learn from you guys, and it shows that I know very little in reality! Probably a case of too many old traditional fly-fishing books from the UK thereafter following the older methods which did work with the higher numbers of fish around in those days, but these days it takes a little more of a tactical approach to catch something decent. I do not know if you are aware of a late angler called Hugh Falkus, but he brought a technical approach that broadened many anglers experiences and catch rate to match, thanks to you both.

Hey John. That's quite a complement. haha We often feel like we don't know what we are doing ourselves. Glad you enjoyed the chat and found it valuable. Have heard of Hugh, but never read any of his stuff. Might have to check it out. Appreciate you being part of the community. Tight lines and good luck out there on the water. 😎👍🏽

I have been flyfishing for a many years, both here in New Zealand and the Western states of the US and Europe and I find U guys so refreshing in your approach to all things flyfishing, trout rodeo expression is commonly used here in New Zealand, the" big ones" 4kg+ you constantly have to wrangle them out of the fast moving water as soon as possible unless otherwise you'll have a break off, very frustrating but all part of the challenge, carry on the wonderful work and I'll keep watching and enjoying

My dad had once told me that fly fishing was boring because you can only fish dry flies. I live within minutes of lower Sac and nymph is mostly used. There are a couple pools you check for evening hatches. Now that fall has finally arrived in Shasta county the water is cooling off and fish are starting to move back up . However with the slower and lower water levels . It's going to be toss up. Snow has not arrived on Shasta. Hopefully soon. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for a good podcast. Another way to attach the split shot on a bounce rig is to attach it at the bottom, below the anchor fly. If you get hooked in the bottom you lose split shot not a fly.

I agree with the survey getting the correct depth and presentation is most difficult for me and I have been fly fishing for the past 5 years.

Or you could use a tight line dropshot rig where all you would lose if you snag up is your split shot. This is my favorite nymph rig to use. Can also use a bobber on it but most folks tight line with it.

Great podcast guys. The drop shot rig or bottom bouncing rig is the best rig for nymphing in most situations. One thing you forgot to add to your fly formula, is size, shape, color, and ………behavior. How your fly behaves in the water column is very important so you need to add that to your formula.

Thank you for all the great information...Going to bring a 3rd or 4th rod....or 5th with me and set it up for bounce rig. I have a streamer rod (9ft7wt) a dry fly rod (9ft4wt) a "general purpost rod" set up for indicator nymphing, (9ft5wt) and a euro specific rod (10.5ft3wt) Yup I bring them all with me when i go fishing....Love to swap and switch, and try new things....Yes I have ADHD why do you ask? I do not bounce rig, because I do not know when to set the hook since the stupid indicator (bobber) is just bounding away....It looks like there is ALWAYS a fish on it...

I'm definitely one of those weirdos who ties my dropper off of the eye of the first fly. However, it's with an inline loop knot, so technically, the first fly is tied off of a dropper loop, and the second fly is tied directly to the tippet. I do agree though that if you use a clinch to clinch off of the first fly then it gets a little weird. The only time I'll do that is with a large wire worm or something that is designed to wiggle and move a bunch. I generally just do the inline loop though.

Informative and interesting show. Nice job, guys. Regarding the survey about what people struggle with the most, I think people voted for getting flies to the right depth because that option is the one you can't visualize or see what's happening. Not sure I would deduce that people are confident in picking the right nymph and tying a good rig. Once we learned enough to be comfortable with hitting the right depth, we will be standing in the river wondering why fish weren't jumping our nymph two at a time. Then, we would be saying, "Maybe I'm not picking the right nymphs" or "Maybe my nymphing setup isn't all that".

I’m trying to understand how you’re explaining the tuck cast. If I stop the rod higher while coming forward to force the nymph to land first, isn’t that stopping my cast short which causes my line to bunch up instead of unfurling the line completely?
@venturesflyco
@venturesflyco 2 ай бұрын
The key is having nymphs/flies that are heavy enough to turn over the entire line. I would go tie on a single size 12 nymph with a tungsten bead and go give it a try. Its pretty neat!

I noticed my catch rate increase when I started dropping my bottom fly off of the eyelet. BUT! It depends on the fly. Larger flies I connect to the bend but tiny midges I tie off of the eyelet.

I use dry dropper rigs mostly as of late, but what I do appreciate about a standard rig is I can easily slide the bobber to change the depth. I am really thinking about getting a dedicated euro nymph rod. I see so many people saying their catch rate goes up when euro nymphing. My concern is the water I am fishing is knee deep(slower water) or ankle deep (faster water)… will I snag the bottom too easily with this method? In the faster water where nymphing makes more since, should I use a non bead head or glass bead head nymph like a zebra midge #18 or #20 to avoid snagging?
@venturesflyco
@venturesflyco 7 ай бұрын
One of our team members is going through that right now as well. Euro is super effective. The principles remain the same. Just got to get it into the strike zone. Getting the correct weighted nymphs is the key to both normal and euro nymphing. So yes, smaller lighter nymphs will be a great tool to have out there.
