The short field landing is executed differently in two aways, and sometimes three. Let’s talk about the two ways it is different.
First, we approach at a slightly slower airspeed. Usually we’d fly at 1.3 Vso on the approach, but here we’ll fly at 1.2 Vso. That means 3-5 knots slower, typically, for smaller aircraft. This matters because we have less energy going into the landing, meaning a faster transition to touchdown, and less speed to dissipate with braking.
Second, touchdown and braking. For the ACS (airmen certification standards) you have 0 + 200 feet to hit your landing mark. That means right on the line and forward 200 feet. No less, no more.
The white touchdown stripes on larger runways are 150 feet long. Imagine another third of that, and you’ve got your target. Putting it in the white guarantees you made it. Any more than that, and you’re right on the edge.
While it’s possible to touch down softly here, that’s not the main goal. While we won’t break the airplane, we’re going to allow it to come down firmly if needed so we can get to braking. Don’t slam it on, but don’t try and hold it off forever and eat up too much distance. Besides, you’ll be approaching at a slower speed and this thing isn’t going to want to float much. Distance matters a LOT in this case. Duh, it’s a short field!
Now we do max braking. In the case of flight training, we do ‘simulated’ max braking. That means we don’t do the kind of braking as if it were all on the line. Why? To save the school from buying new brakes and tires every few flights.
Aerodynamic braking is perhaps the best method to brake. It means as soon as you’ve touched down, and you have brake pressure, apply back pressure on the yoke so the elevator is deflected upward. This causes a lot of extra drag. Time it correctly with brake application as to not lift off the runway. You should be slow enough already where that won’t be much of an issue.
Third, which we didn’t mention before, was the potential need to land OVER a 50 foot obstacle. That means you can either slip into the runway, or plan a steeper approach.
If you land on your target, and stop well, then you’ve accomplished a solid short field landing!

Excellent, thank you. The landing vids will be great in 360 as the viewer can look out the side to get the 'picture' of what the runway will look like when you turn Base etc. Very well done. I am getting back into flying after a 20 year break so appreciate everything that you post.

Hey Chris, awesome vid as usual. Only thing I think could be expanded upon is max braking technique - avoid lock up at all costs as this can lead to loss of directional control especially on a wet runway.

And creating flat spots on the tires. One time I put too much heat on the tires, and ended up blowing a tire two takeoffs later.

I was taught to raise flaps as soon after touchdown as possible to have as much pressure on the gear as possible during braking. Is there a reason you don’t use this technique?

I guess you could. But I feel like you're talking bush-pilot-short. Aerodynamic and use of brakes seems to do pretty awesome.

Got it. I definitely wasn’t sharp shooting your video. As with many others we appreciate you making them. And after getting my PPL in Anchorage, I love getting to see Alaska again. Homer was our favorite camping location. WLBS

I was taught the same thing in a C182, Always dump flaps at touchdown while pulling full back on the yoke. break as necessary.

Question: Flaps up immediately on landing before aerodynamic braking? The POH on a 172 says to do that, but it sounds like that may be no longer recommended?

of you pull the power 'to slow down' wouldnt the power drop cause the nose to pitch down and you wind up fast again? would you best trim up a little to slow down?

Very interesting and informative. Thank you!! Question,,hope not a repeat, . In my piper,,over the numbers speed ,long runway is 65 kts.. How much do u reduce approach speed in ur short field ops?

Ok... so what are you using as your “aiming point”.... the captains bars? This is what confuses me... some say “aim” before at the top of the second centerline in between the touchdown point markers.... then you will land on the captains bars... but then the captains bars ARE the aiming point.
@angleofattack

I don't think any of that is wrong, but yes, you will float beyond.

I’m not sure I understand. When I did short field landing practice at my local field (YPOD) flying an rv8a it had no displaced threshold. My objective was to land before the 1000 foot marker and turn into the adjacent taxi way. So is landing ON the 1000 ft markers short field? Just wanting to clear up my confusion

On a long runway, it’s just a way to have a target. The ACS calls for 200 foot tolerance after the touchdown point. The thousand footers are 150 feet long.

Chris at what point are you cutting power? right over your intended touch down point or before that? i sometimes land short and wonder if i'm cutting power too soon. My speed is stable around 62 coming in.
@angleofattack

Depends on the airplane. Mine is draggy. I don’t cut it until right before round out

@@angleofattack thanks i'll try that. i'm training in a 172 as well, check ride in a month or so. i'm likely cutting it earlier and treating it like a normal landing.

Curious, why are you flying from the right , all your instruments are left ?

Instructor flies from the right seat so the student can be in the left. This is my way of clearing the view of the instruments for you, the viewer, and also helping you imagine yourself in that seat.

Angle of Attack O 👍 . We have a pilot on our field that started as a crop duster and finished with the CIA . He would take new pilots to KHRJ and bet the he could land on the numbers flying a 172 . He would touch and stop in 25 feet on runway 5 . ( he took my $20 )
