Formatting Flash Drives or Hard Drives can be tough because its often complicated. But here’s a simple tutorial as to How to format a Flash Drive on a Mac and a small tutorial on exactly what kind of formats you should choose if you want to make your flash drive compatible with certain types of computers. For the most part, if you have multiple types of computers, you should stick with ExFat because it is compatible with most computers while the more specific ones like NTFS or Mac OS Extended can be a bad idea. However, these specific file systems are better at making sure that your data doesn’t get corrupted at the cost of compatibility.

hey cool video. was the three hours later thing a joke? Also when i format let say a Lacie or G technology SSD and do exfat, and partition it, and i drop a file onto the SSD where will it land, which partition? I use a mac only but just in case i needed the file found on a pc.

The partitions act as separate drives. Almost as if you split your device into two. So you get to chose where to put it.

What about the scheme? You didn't address that. My mac defaulted to GUID partition. Does Master Boot Record provide benefits? Help!

Great point about the partition scheme. The GUID Partition Table (GPT) is the modern standard and is required for newer systems, especially if you’re using a drive larger than 2 TB. It also allows for more partitions and is generally more robust. Master Boot Record (MBR) is older and might be needed for compatibility with some older systems or utilities. It’s limited to drives up to 2 TB and only supports up to 4 primary partitions. If you’re using your flash drive with both Mac and PC, and you don’t need it for older PCs, sticking with GUID is usually the best choice. Hope this helps
