And it works well. I'd paid for expensive framing for years to avoid dust in the matts but tried this with perspex instead. It seems to hold the pastel in place better and is cheaper and lighter. No more expensive framing bills. :-)

Thank you, Guenevere! That was a wonderful video. I will take on my next framing project with a lot more confidence. I'll just pass on one idea that I saw a few days ago: It was an article about using mat boards instead of those spacers. The boards had a 45-degree bevel, and they were reversed -- so the high point touched the glass (instead of the usual orientation). The purpose was to catch falling pastel pigment at the bottom, while still hiding those particles from the viewer. In other words, the particles were behind the bevel. I thought that was clever.

I am familiar with using mat board for soccer and I prefer the Economy Spacers because it is much easier, I don't have to cut a bunch of mat, I don't have to buy a mat cutter. The plastic spacer are just simple and easy to use. I also like that they are made in Oregon so when I order them they arrive the next day!

I prefer thinner, but it really is your choice. Actually if you are using plexiglass you need a bit more space to avoid the static.

You are a great artists and have such great videos. I am trying to come up with an easy cheap way to transport and sell oil pastel paintings on paper. You have a lot of patience. I just want to paint lol. And go sell them in art fairs but without framing them even super cheap there really is no way to safely transport them without using fixative and I never like the outcome with that. If you have any ideas or advice I’d love to hear it. Thanks

I mostly paint with oil paints so those are the only ones I have tried to transport and sell. For my pastels I either keep them in flat files or get them framed pretty fast to preserve them.

I hope you don’t mind an additional tip. You might want to carefully sand the sharp edges of the glass a little before applying the adhesive strips. If you push the strips down, as demonstrated here, you might receive a nasty cut, especially from glass in inexpensive frames. Blood on a pastel is hard to remove.

Hi Guenevere Schwien! Great video, thanks. I live in Brazil and I plan to go the US and bring a bunch of art materials, and between those I plan to bring too some means of crafting some frames. My question is about those EconoSpace, Art and Glass Separator. Are there any substitutes for those, or any DIY safe way to separate the glass from the picture? Those Econospace separators are expensive and long to fit in a luggage. Thanks for sharing!

I am not aware of a substitute you can buy, but perhaps you can use foam board and cut it down into thin strips.

Hi, I mostly use colored pencils but, use very moderate amount of pastels. My ? Is do I, need to go the extra mile as you do? With the, econo spacers, tape Ect with out shooting myself in the foot later? Also have you ever started with paper from a pad instead of sheets?

+John Slepecki jr That is a great question. I would say that if you are using small amounts of pastel that is very tiny and on Non-textured paper you are fine to skip the spacers but I would suggest always doing the tape part for any paper media because that will protect it. If you don't care about the longevity of your work you don't need the tape. You would probably want to have a mat to keep the work from touching the glass so the process would be quite similar with the mat in place of the Spacers. Hope that helps.

Pastels are a fragile medium you must have them under glass or they will get damaged by a breeze, movement, a sneeze, and dust will dull the color very quickly. Anything that touches the surface will wipe off the pigment. If you don't want to use glass I would suggest learning to use oil or acrylics. Pastels are inherently delicate, and require protection.

Here is a problem that I had. when I bought a premade frame with glass from Jerry's Artarama, the piece of glass was a good 1/4" smaller than the inside of the frame, so that the spacers showed from the front.

The glass she used is probably Artglas. Artglas has a 70%+ UV filter and a very low reflection. (It's also used in museums and you can order it online)

The whole reason for using a wire to hang art is that the screws don't have to be perfect because the wire averages it out, the wire is what allows the painting to hang straight. If you were hanging the painting with one horizontal lines then you would need to measure the heck out if it for the painting to be level. On a wire you can make adjustments while it is hanging, so as long at the screws are in a similar, but not exact location on either side the painting can be hung straight because you adjust it once it is hanging.

I don’t think I would feel comfortable trying this even after watching the video. What kind of foam board? Thickness? What brand tape? Where do you find that paper? What about museum glass? Where do you find the frame? I have several pieces I would like to have framed. I don’t have that point gun either.

This is a professional process and does require some investment in supplies and tools. I would suggest going to an art store that does framing and look at the supplies in person. Brand doesn't matter.

I have used a boxed frame for pastels where the glass sits away from the art work adding a mount around the art work inbetween the actual art work and mount I put a thin piece of mat board along the width at the bottom edge 😊😊 so if any pastel falls you won’t see it . Just an idea . 😊

That is a personal preference. I personally think they look old and take up space. I prefer a more modern look with just the frame.
