So what messes me up is hearing French. I'm taking courses and the exam is strictly audio based. I have a hard time with words such as "Ils ont" because you pronounce the "s" with "ont" so I hear "sont". And I get the translation wrong.

Ils sont ... also needs to be distinguished.

"Ils ont" (They have **masculine**) is pronounced "Ils z'ont" whereas "Ils sont" (They are **masculine**) is pronounced "Ils ssont"

S with à vowel pronounces as à z. So ilszont

But i made à mistake! The rule applies except for ils sont! So à distinction is clear between ils sont and ils ont! Hope i have cleared that up now!
