This video came at just the right time, I've just been referred to WCS for getting a chair to allow me to do things w my chronic illness and I know i'll face barriers as my condition is not seen as 'that bad' and i use it for fatigue and pain reasons mainly, but if i manage to get through that this has given me a lot of information, thank you!

Perfect timing, I’m waiting on my wheelchair assessment right now (my neuro rehab doctor and disability physio working together). I currently have an NHS chair but it is your bog standard basic couple of hundred quid chair, soooo heavy, so big and so basic it didn’t need an assessment by anyone other than my physio and measurements were simply for width and footrest height. I’m an ambulatory (barely) user only just shifting over to majority wheelchair this past year. I feel so much more informed going into the assessment thanks to all the info you have shared in this and other videos, thank you!

Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard thanks! The one that hit home to me about the mistakes video was the don’t buy just for now, buy for five years down the line. My condition is progressive, everything we do is to slow down progression there is no turning back the clock so I have to be realistic. I’m still a bit stuck on wanting a light self propelled chair but my physio has been slipping the idea of powered chairs in the mix. Your video really made me stop and think. Life and chronic conditions don’t bend to what we want to be able to do, drive and independence are good but if you don’t slow the train and be realistic, how ever difficult that can be, you are only storing up for more pain and costly errors later.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear this, I don't have the same condition as yourself, I have severe M.E. Because I was unable to self propel a manual wheelchair, the NHS gave me a power chair. Could you use a power chair? Mind you the reason I am watching this video is because I am struggling with the chair they have given me, though I have been very grateful. My needs have changed. I am needing a more advanced chair.

I gave up asking for help, and paid for my chair myself. I didn't get the perfect one for me because i couldn't afford it. I got a cheaper one that will do. When you have less visible illnesses you seem to get a lot less help, or the process is more complicated.

Insurance companies in the U.S. can be just as annoying as the NHS - sometimes they will happily cover everything you need, and sometimes they will fight tooth and nail and put their foot down. I have my very first seating evaluation on Friday, and I'm hoping my insurance will cover the things I need, particularly the SmartDrive.

Shannon B I’m in the States and there’s a rule where if I can walk for a few minutes I have to pay for the wheelchair myself. I don’t have trouble walking, but standing static or walking for more than a few minutes causes searing pain. Insurance companies don’t care so I have to save 5,000 US dollars for a new chair every five years or so. This along with my 4,000 dollar dentures and my contacts. I only get 12,000 disability dollars a year and even that the Congress is trying to defund for millions of disabled people

Quickie make some of the lightest chairs on the market - certainly lighter than an NHS standard wheelchair. I would rather go the, NHS or voucher route, as I hate having to go cap in hand to a charity. And crowdfunding means you have to play the Sympathy Card - and what is the person helping to fund you getting in return? These are MY personal feelings, based on experiences I have had. It would help if more Wheelchair Services had actual wheelchair users employed to assist. A non-disabled person might have the product knowledge, but a wheelchair user has PRACTICAL knowledge of what it is like to use a wheelchair on a daily basis.

I have a Quickie, and I love it! In fact, that’s the brand that I’ve had for my last 3 or 4 chairs. I don’t have an extremely lightweight wheelchair, but then again I don’t need one. But I understand that someone who transfers to a car would need one. But Quickie does make lighter ones. And it depends on what add-ons you get.

The NHS ones are super strict with modifying and additions to the chair. I got one through them as it’s my first proper one and I don’t have a long list of things I know I need, they were great at adding some costly things on because I needed them though. In a few years when I’m up for a different one I will probably have a super long list and take the voucher!

Thank you for an informative introduction to sourcing wheel chairs I have a basic NHS wheel chair which I hardly use these days. Self propelling cause huge spinal pain and my shoulders are in danger of booking on strike. I self funded my power chair 12 years ago and it was second hand then. I'm fortunate in that I'm very practical and can do maintenance and repairs myself. Which is really lucky I damage the cable from the controller to the motors and was quoted £150 plus fitting. It cost me 50p in parts and a few hours of head scratching to get it working again. Not elegant but it works. I would dearly love a new chair but at £10k plus there's no chance. I'm a big bloke 6'5" and 23 stones. So I keep doing the lottery in the forlorn hope......... I can across your channel whilst browsing and you have given me a real boost. COVID has played merry hell with the NHS. I was due to have a denervation but switched pathways to a trust that offers spinal cord stimulation and while things are starting up again it will be March 21 before I get a trial and if that's successful upto another 2 years before the full version is implanted. All the while no denervation as it interfere with the trial and then still no denervation as I could be offered a cancellation. I'm fortunate in that opiates work for me though my dosage is creeping up and up and no doubt I'll be told "sorry no more" but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Sorry for rumbling on but I don't often put things into words. Off to watch some more of you story

Great video at a great time!! I thought I'd share a bit about my NHS WCS experience so far: I had an assessment with a rehab assistant last week which lasted about 5 minutes and i got offered the standard 16+kg chair, which isn't suitable for me at all. I had to ask about the voucher scheme (now called personal wheelchair budget) and not being knowledgeable on the system, she had to speak to her manager. Eventually we figured out that I could have a £175 voucher (not much, i know) which I could spend outside the NHS Finally, she rang back and said I can use the voucher WITHIN the NHS, so I still get an NHS chair but pay the difference for a higher spec one. I think I'm going to end up with a Quickie Argon (the one Gem thinks is bulky and heavy oops), which is much cheaper from the NHS than third-party. I really wish I had a proper assessment of my needs though, because my mobility and seating needs havent actually been looked at unfortunately. But I don't know what to do about that
@ecologist_to_be
@ecologist_to_be 4 жыл бұрын
I'd request a new assessment. They should be measuring you for starters. A good assessment should take at least an hour if not longer! Sometimes you do have to prove you cannot use a heavier wheelchair which is a faff as no one who uses wheelchair independently should have to use the off the shelf chairs in my opinion. They're terrible for your shoulders.

The next one was light and compact but I was having problems with it so worte out a nice letter, they called me in and I ended up with a Quickie Life-R ok not super duper ultra light but I like it for now. Did all my research and I didn't qualify for the level of chair that I really need so ended up with a chair though the ADP (Ontario - adaptive device program) even the OT that I was assigned the second time wasn't helpful (the first one I fired as he was not talking to me but to my husband - and that just ticked me off and he dropped off a hospital clunker that not even my husband could move around in). the chair that they settled on that I was eligible for costing them almost 3k (approx 1768.54 pounds) and it is a basic stock foldable Helio A chair, that I can't even get into our vehicle so i'm virutally stuck at home in it because I can't get it into our vehicle (it won't fit) which is a decent size SUV. I'm still trying to fight to get a chair that I can use, but with COVID I have no idea if anything will be done about it since they seemed eager to get me into it and haven't returned any calls I've made in the past two months).

I am looking to get it through Mobility Hire next time so I can get a car on Motability. Custom powerchairs really expensive, mine costs £10.5k and that is the cheaper one. A powerchair on NHS you need to use chair for ALL mobility needs, if you can use manual in house you won't get one. My experience is Derby & Manchester which had identical criteria.

I am facing the same issue. Initially things were fine, but things have changed, and it depends on the technician doing the repair, some of them are rude, or they tell you things that are not true. I have been left bed ridden because front castors were away, and I cannot use an ordinary wheelchair. They show no compassion whatsoever. They don't try and help, they leave you stranded! Some are really nice, but lately its been terrible. I am in constant fear of something breaking. I live alone and have no family support, or carers. I am very independent. I cannot walk at all. I have limited ability to use my arms. I have a repair booked for tomorrow, and I am dreading it. The castors are clicking and crunching making that dreaded sound. The last time they tried to tell me there was nothing wrong that power chairs always click. But you get to know your own chair. It becomes a part of you. So this video is amazing and very real and honest. You should have automatically been given a power chair, if you are struggling this way. I am looking into Motability. I am just worried about the cost. But then at least they are reliable from what I have heard. I was fortunate I had an excellent OT at the time. In fact it was her idea to push for a power chair. She could see I wasn't able to get around my house at all. I was trying to pull and use my feet and legs to haul myself along. I could do say the equivalent of two steps of and able bodied person before having to stop in agony and I would get rapidly weaker and weaker till I couldn't move an inch! I have severe M.E. so the exertion of a short trip to the toilet, left me unable to get out of bed for several hours. I dreaded having to move, because the pain was sheer torment. The power chair allowed me to rest those muscles, which I couldn't use anyway, and after lots of bed rest and carefully returning to activity, I was able to regain most of my independence, and even better I could have my first taste of the outdoors, there's nothing worse than being trapped inside. I need the powerchair for everything. I hope you managed to sort out something. I am so tired of the NHS messing with me. It's been really upsetting.

I had a 50ft fall 8 months ago and I broke a lot of bones etc ie, hip, pelvis, feet, a bit of spine etc but recently I had a nerve conduction test and iv got a dead / paralysed inferior glutinous or bialactiral superior glutinous nerve now I think it’s going to be permanent, I can use crutches now and then when it’s not too painful etc so Il never walk right again (I don’t know fully just yet) having more surgery. Will I be eligible for a self propelled wheelchair 🦽 I have one from the British Red Cross I paid a fee off £20 it’s been good for the time being but it’s very heavy and hard to push etc and it would be super hard getting it in and out the car. Thanks 🙏

Bit late to the game, sure, but I've been reading on the Cambridge and Peterborough Wheelchair Service (site) that the Personal Wheelchair Budget scheme has now replaced the Voucher one - don't know if this has been nationally rolled out or not? Hmmm... Edit: www.england.nhs.uk/personal-health-budgets/personal-wheelchair-budgets/

I bought a second hand power chair which is quite large and weighs 78kg and I can’t get it in the car myself and obviously it wasn’t fitted. My local wheelchair services wouldn’t even assess me as I can walk more then three steps inside, despite the GP referring me. So I had no help at all not even a voucher. I have EDS and osteo arthritis, my hands are painful arthritic and dislocate and my shoulders are starting to deteriorate, so self propelling isn’t an option. I’m medically retired now so access to work isn’t an option. I really desperately want to be able to go over rough ground uphill and into the local country park as it is right on my doorstep. Would a manual add on enable me to do this if I could fund a manual chair of course!?. At the moment I only get to go out when someone is with me and pushes me in an uncomfortable transit chair I borrow sometimes, or if I have someone strong enough to lift the powerchair in and out of the car. Or I can go a very short distance in my power chair locally, which is absolutely amazingly lovely as I was housebound for three years in a four storey house I rarely managed to leave, but I managed to sell it eventually and buy one. I had a DFG grant and a stairlift and ramp fitted. They won’t let me have a ramp to my back door though, so I can only get in the garden on crutches. Being able to get around the local reservoir alone would be incredible! Any advice would be fab! Ideally I’d like an nhs chair as I don’t have a huge amount of money and I am a single mum of an increasingly expensive teenager! Also is funding available for the add on as they seemed incredibly expensive when I looked into it? I’ve just discovered your channel and think I’ll be binge watching now! Thanks! 😀

Have you considered a hoist for your electric wheelchair to get it in the car? It may be a cheaper option than funding a whole new manual chair suitable for off road. The electric add ons for manual wheelchairs can cost more than a hoist. I have a hoist being fitted 17th for 78kg chair at a total of £1395. If you're entitled to Motabilty when you get a car you can request a hoist.

It's disgusting the prices charged for wheelchairs and particularly power attachments! Most people who need the damn things can't work and it puts them out of reach. Relying on the NHS for a chair is OK but not great. My chair is about 12-13kg which is not really heavy but there are lighter available. However I have a closed frame chair because my chairs take a real beating every day. I walk my dogs in the woods, play in the garden with my kids and even forge metal. Light my be good but for me it's not the only consideration. I have actually bent a chair in the past.

I had an NHS Wheelchair. It was stolen when I left it by my front door. Birmingham Wheelchair Services refuse to replace the stolen one. It was used and needed. OK, I mostly gad about on crutches. Birmingham Wheelchair Services make up their own policies on how they run their services. It's the Patients Charter they should abide by.

Disgusting!! They should have provided insurance with the chair but I know my chair insurance if left outside under supervised it classed as my fault. 🙄

Did you not have to give the wheelchair back which was partially funded by Access to Work?

If you will be using it in a new job you shouldn't have to give chair back but if you get it via Access to Work and then leave work you will likely have to give Access to Work the money back. The rules are very complex.

Access to work only allow you to use wheelchairs they fully find, at work. You aren’t supposed to use it at home unless you contribute or I guess in this case the nhs partly funded it. So I suspect that would also mean it would not have to be returned to access to work.
