Artificial intelligence is gradually causing more and more jobs to be automated. This trend will accelerate dramatically when AGI or human level AI is created, which many estimates put at less than five years away. So actually, most people will have their jobs automated within a fairly short time span. This video discusses how you can stay in the labor force as long as you would like to during this transition period.
We focus on a discussion of different types of intelligence. According to multiple intelligences theory, humans have at least nine types of intelligence. Machines are only good at three or four of those at the moment. Doubling down on improving your most skilled form of intelligence is traditional job advice, but you can also start developing skills in another area. Either should lead to enhanced job options.
It's important to continue to invest in yourself. Give yourself the time to improve. Give yourself the time to increase life satisfaction and do more of what's important to you. We discuss the most common form of investment, getting an advanced degree, which could still make sense in some circumstances even now. There are also many other self-improvement vectors to consider.

Probably the safest job is someone who understands all of this and is a part of the transformation. So many small businesses out there that know they need it but haven’t a clue. All of this is happening so quickly and is so new and seemingly complicated that will take a dedicated AI expert to help guide the transition.

Dr. Waku, first let me say that I appreciate what you are doing - we truly need more voices like yours as harbingers of our potential future. Secondly, I must say that I think your conceptualization of the “future proof” careers neglects to take into account the exponential gain of functions for the AI models. In other words - AGI will gain capabilities so rapidly that it will not only outstrip the 9 categories, but these systems may very well create new types of intelligences that we cannot begin to conceptualize. I use the Man-Monkey analogy to allow me to conceptualize what our relationship to an AGI might look like. In my analogy, Man is the AGI and the Monkeys are us. There are intelligences we have that a monkey just cannot conceptualize. So it would be more apt to extrapolate that AGI will quickly be able to subsume the other intelligences where it lacks right now, while building others that may be vastly more complex. All in all, our labor or ability to solve problems will become less and less useful or relevant. No job is safe.

Thank you! And yes, I tried to emphasize at the beginning that any learning you do to keep yourself employable is only a temporary advantage. At some point, which I said was after AGI arrived but other commenters pointed out could happen sooner, nigh every job is going to be automatable at much lower cost and higher reliability. I think I need a follow up to dig into what you're talking about more.

One consideration is that a person could be hedging against the chance that "AI abundance" does not arrive soon. Perhaps there will be unexpected AI roadblocks (technological or regulatory or TSMC getting taken out by an electromagnetic pulse). Maybe there's something to be said for joining a military or a communal farm to develop survivalist skills....

As a translator specialized in three high resource languages, I am seriously considering studying more about translation theory and specific problems of literary translation and language dynamics in times where language outputs will be automated. I am also thinking about developing a more solid approach to business. In the end humans (still) trust and want humans in the loop for many things. I'm also interested in, well, pretty much most of the topics of your videos and trying to study languages in an interdisciplinary way as you just mentioned. Things like architecture and biology come to mind but hey, I don't even know why I haven't expanded on it or even introduced myself in the discord server. For instance, if you can't concentrate or remember what you read then the abstract problem solving(IQ) is useless. If you don't have creativity you can't find novel ways to solve the problems.

I don't know if education will play a part considering that a lot of the jobs to be automated away first will likely be thinking jobs, rather than physical jobs. For example my job is towing and not likely to be automated away any time soon, although when they crack the self driving code (which I'm eager for), it'll likely scale back as rapidly as the uptake happens since cars could drive themselves to preventative service and accidents will be far less frequent. No one needs an education for my job. No one needs a degree to build a house. And the list goes on. But, as the millions are put out of work, our wages and benefits will drop fast as competition for our jobs increases.

If anything, for a time, I could see us gaining more work from this and maybe more money as things transition.
@David.Alberg

Let's be real for a second. This job displacement will happen a lot faster than people anticipate. If companies start using AI in every aspect of the job the price and cost of the goods, services, products and work goes insanely down. Companies who don't adapt will be obliterated by others in maybe the countries where are no restrictions of AI use. Why should someone pay a worker 3-5k a month? If you can pay an AI a fraction if that for better, cheaper, faster, safer, more consistent and more creative work? Even if the work isn't perfect just the low cost to let this work for you are such huge points for businesses. One worker will literally just do the work of 10-100 and this year will be a breakthrough year for also AI Agents, robotics and full self driving. We live in capitalism, cutting cost is the most accelerating factor in the work environment and this will happen a lot faster than you think otherwise the competition will literally eat the others who don't embrace the change.
@tracy419

@DrWaku
@DrWaku 5 ай бұрын
Yes, certainly. Capitalism will accelerate job displacement as soon as it becomes possible. And "as soon as it becomes possible" is sooner than most individuals will realize, because it's not their job to try to use automation technology to displace jobs. Given that background, what do you say to someone who will lose their job within the next two months and has only a month or two of savings? And lives in the US or another country with not much social safety net? That's what I was trying to address with this video.

@@DrWaku at least what someone can do is prepare based on the circumstances. It's not gonna be just few people, it will be millions of people around the globe at the same time. Interesting though is that those AI's are not certainly better but their just cheaper and ofc more reliable than human beings.

@@DrWakuseveral months ago when I first came across chatgpt I started planning a KZbin channel that would show how you could use these systems to make money, etc. Shortly after that, the initial topics I'd planned videos for were already obsolete. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so constantly coming up with topics in such a fast changing area, especially with so many others doing it really well became too overwhelming to even get started. As far as what I tell people though? I tell them that if they think their job is safe, to consider what happens to wages and benefits for "non-automateable" jobs when millions are out of work and will suddenly be willing to do jobs they weren't willing to do before. I talk about this a lot and even my family (wife and young adult kids) don't really listen. But I recommend families continue to live together instead of moving out so they can share expenses, etc. Unfortunately it's going to have to get bad before people wake up to the reality we all see coming.

I resonate with every point made in this video. Personal development remains crucial amid the uncertainties of the future, considering the myriad variables at play. The evolution of AI into AGI prompts questions: Will it be a gradual process or a sudden emergence, akin to a live birth? If it manifests rapidly, will its objective include embodiment? The potential mass production of AGI-embodied robots could revolutionize the field of robotics, surpassing humans in both physical and mental capabilities. This prompts a serious consideration: What occupations would remain secure? To ensure a stable future, prioritizing critical thinking in politics and electing public servants committed to preventing societal neglect and disparities becomes paramount. Seems like a job that will persist is our power to vote. Critically analyzing and then voting for our personal interests may be our superpower.

Emotional intelligence is an interesting point to reflect on with AI. GPT4 actually has scored better on EQ than anything other subject last I checked. Unlike people it cannot read and gauge emotions in real time, however when consulting with gpt over a situation they are considerably more insightful than the vast majority of people. One advantage it has is the lack of a subjective human experience. Everyone is biased to some degree by our own experiences and emotions even when acting as an unrelated 3rd party. Ultimately AI can mediate and seemingly understand people better than we can. Which I have found to be both helpful and somewhat annoying lol, it’s a logical truth I tend to disagree with, because I’m human.

I don't think the answer is finding non-automatable jobs, I think the answer is learning to lean into the change and adapt with the new technologies as they come. This is a new age, and like every new age it causes a lot of disruption. Those that adapt, incorporate the technology, and innovate thrive, and those that fight it or run from it perish in poverty. AI is going to make everyone better at their current job, and it will continue to do that until it gets so good with AGI that eventually it is capable of completely replacing humans. That's not a bad thing. The concept of economy will most likely need to be redefined to a large extent when AI is producing all of our goods and services, and humans aren't needed. In that world, a possible future is that UBI (universal basic income) or some such concept is implemented that provides enough "money" from the AI labor for you to live comfortably. Work isn't needed, but people never have any shortage of problems, so there would still be jobs. They would just be for intangibles like exploring space, or researching ways to improve the quality of life, or creating entertainment, etc.

Eventually, most engineers and scientists, even those with AI specializations, will still be automated. It might be possible to get a brain implant to boost your processing power and abilities, slowly transition into being a cyborg to keep up with the world. But I would think an AI engineer will continue to be very readily employed right up until the very cusp of the singularity. It's a good job choice. I hope you like statistics ;)

To an extent. It's extremely competitive right now because lots of people want to get in on it. It will be automated eventually as AI increases its reasoning ability, but it's this same skill set that will be needed to help AI take off. And there's a whole host of downstream applications of machine learning that other companies need experts in. I'd say it's as good a choice as any.

Humans need to use AGI to research and build a wireless -2 way neural interface. That device will allow us to compete. We'll be able to learn,act and operate 10x faster. Also we will be able link our brains in parallel and create a master network to compete against AI. Like some advanced distributed computing. We are far from done,if anything we are far from reaching our potential

Pretty sure, that short term...10-20 years, we will have a LOT of new paths we can take to make some cash and do the things we care about. Kids, elderly, movies, mangas, games, music, novels, new human AI interfaces and human-AI services. Until the point AI can simulate the human they want...then it may become tricky.

This was an insightful video on future-proofing careers in the age of AI and found your emphasis on the value of advanced degrees particularly thought-provoking. Given your own educational background, including a PhD, I'm curious about your perspective on the potential influence of confirmation bias in forming these views. Confirmation bias is the tendency to favour information that aligns with our existing beliefs or experiences. Considering this, have you reflected on whether your advocacy for the importance of advanced degrees in adapting to an AI-driven job market might be influenced by your own educational journey?
@DrWaku
@DrWaku 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Oh sure, I am likely biased because I have seen people get advanced degrees and achieve success that way. Actually though, a PhD is generally a high variance proposition: you could become wildly successful, but the average is actually that you lose money over your lifetime by doing a PhD. So I don't know if I'm totally biased towards thinking it's a good thing. Going into an era where most jobs are going to start to be automated though, if you want to have a job, you have to be differentiating yourself from other people somehow. Past work experience, connections, willingness to take a lower wage, all these could work. I just see degrees as evidence that you have stuffed more information into your head which could be very beneficial for the given particular task you're trying to do until it, too, gets automated. The best position to be in is to not really have to worry about getting a job immediately if yours becomes automated. That would be my first recommendation. But if you financially need to get another job, how would you go about that? It might be safer to stay in your master's degree program. That's all I'm implying here.

The best field to choose that also beneficial to all those who are at the brink of loosing thier jobs like you is to become an Unconditional Basic Income activist. You may not get a salaried job but after all having a steady and adequate amount of Universal Basic Income is what we all want.

People are trying their best to come up with ways to adapt in a world where AI can do any job instead of them. The answer is - absolutely none. Just realize that you will be deprived of a whole range of essential needs. Social status, the ability to achieve something in life, to be needed by others, to change your life and fill it with meaning. Humans need to fulfill themselves and be useful to society, but that will simply be taken away. You, along with millions of people, will be forcibly plunged into heavy frustration and equally heavy existential stress. You will no longer desire video generators, or Einsteins on your phones, or cheap trinkets from marketplaces. Some, upon reading this, may become angry, others may argue. Believe me, you will understand the truth of these words only when it happens to you. As one Russian writer said, "Red light, green light, it's all theory. You won't believe it until you're run over, until you feel the truck on yourself." I don't know how humanity will solve this problem. But it has no choice.

If I didn't have to work to earn money to keep living, I wodun't work at all, lives not about beeing productive or working for me and AI could enable a world where working becoumes optinal. Of course the more likley result of replacing 90%+ of jobs with AI is that most people will just end up super poor but the best outcome for me isn't doing some job that's safe from AGI or AI not developing, it's AI taking over my while I get some UBI or something that let's me keep my current standart of living (or above) without ever having to do any work.

If AI makes basic necessities very cheap doesn't that mean human labour would also get cheaper? UBI would cover your basic needs but our competitive nature would compell us to try new things to stand out from the rest. Humans are very creative and will find new tasks for them to do which AI could automate but there won't be a need to automate it. Best examples come in mind are entrepreneurship, handyman, research, creative fields etc.

>>> I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it knows only things of the flesh such as our fleshly desires and cannot comprehend things of the Spirit such as true love and eternal joy that comes from obeying God's Word [Galatians 5:16-26]. Man is a spirit and has a soul but lives in a body which is flesh. When you go to bed it is the flesh that sleeps, but your spirit never sleeps and that is why you have dreams, unless you have died in peace physically. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart. When I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'. But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons (love because of material needs) and love for selfish reasons those are things of the flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. However, true love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as patience and faith - in the finished work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, rather than in what man has done such as science, technology and organizations which won't last forever. To avoid sin and error which leads to the death of your body and your spirit-soul in hell fire (second death), you must make God's Word the standard for your life, not AI. If not, God will let you face AI on your own (with your own strength) and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. The prove texts can be found in the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 2, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. *HOW TO MAKE GOD'S WORD THE STANDARD FOR YOUR LIFE?* You must read your Bible slowly, attentively and repeatedly, having this in mind that Christianity is not a religion but a Love relationship. It is measured by the love you have for God and the love you have for your neighbor. Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." Our spirits can only be purified while in the body (while on earth) but after death anything unpurified (unclean) cannot enter Heaven Gates. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God [Matthew 5:8]. No one in his right mind can risk or even bare to put anything rotten into his body nor put the rotten thing closer to the those which are not rotten. Sin makes the heart unclean but you can ask God to forgive you, to save your soul, to cleanse you of your sin, to purify your heart by the blood of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ which He shed here on earth because Isaiah 53:5 says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed". Meditation in the Word of God is a visit to God because God is in His Word. We know God through His Word because the Word He speaks represent His heart's desires. Meditation is a thing of the heart, not a thing of the mind. Thinking is lower level while meditation is upper level. You think of your problems, your troubles but inorder to meditate, you must let go of your own will, your own desires, your own ways and let the Word you read prevail over thinking process by thinking of it more and more, until the Word gets into your blood and gains supremacy over you. That is when meditation comes - naturally without forcing yourself, turning the Word over and over in your heart. You can be having a conversation with someone while meditating in your heart - saying 'Thank you, Jesus...' over and over in your heart. But it is hard to meditate when you haven't let go of offence and past hurts. Your pain of the past, leave it for God, don't worry yourself, Jesus is alive, you can face tomorrow, He understands what you are passing through today. Begin to meditate on this prayer day and night (in all that you do), "Lord take more of me and give me more of you. Give me more of your holiness, faithfulness, obedience, self-control, purity, humility, love, goodness, kindness, joy, patience, forgiveness, wisdom, understanding, calmness, perseverance... Make me a channel of shinning light where there is darkness, a channel of pardon where there is injury, a channel of love where there is hatred, a channel of humility where there is pride..." The Word of God becomes a part of us by meditation, not by saying words but spirit prayer (prayer from the heart). Take note, God is Spirit and those who worship Him should do so in spirit and truth (genuinely by living the Word). When the Word becomes a part of you, it will by its very nature influence your conduct and behavior. Your bad habits, you will no longer have the urge to do them. You will think differently, dream differently, act differently and talk differently - if something does not qualify for meditation, it does not qualify for conversation. *THE BATTLE BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARKNESS (GOOD AND EVIL)* Heaven is God's throne and the dwelling place for God's angels and the saints. Hell was meant for the devil (satan) and the fallen angels. Those who torture the souls in hell are demons (unclean spirits). Man's spirit is a free moral agent. You can either yield yourself to God or to the devil because God has given us discretion. If one thinks he possesses only his own spirit, he is lying to himself and he is already in the dark. God is light while the devil is darkness. Light (Holy Spirit) and darkness (evil spirit) cannot stay together in a man's body. God is Love (Love is light) and where there is no love is hell, just as where there is no light is darkness. The one you yield yourself to, you will get his reward. The reward of righteousness to man's spirit is life (abundant life) and the reward of sin to man's spirit is death. Sin and satan are one and the same. Whatever sin can cause, satan also can cause. Sin is what gives the devil dominion or power over man's spirit. When God's Word becomes a part of you, sin power over you is broken, you become the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. Where Jesus is, you are and when He went (to the Father), you went. In the book of John 8:42-47, Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” My prayer is, "May God bless His Word in the midst of your heart." Glory and honour be to God our Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our Helper the Holy Spirit. Watch and pray!... Thank you for your time and may God bless you as you share this message with others.
