I've been doing the index finger trick for the last year since I came back, but I never realized the effect it had on firming my wrist. I started doing it for two reasons: it helps me not squeeze on the release (because I'm focusing on keeping the finger under the ball) and it helps me keep my fingers on the inside half of the ball during the delivery just before the release. With that being said, it doesn't work as well when I'm wearing my wrist support. I've been using a Pro Release on and off for the last 20 years or so. Time to finally retire it, I guess. I learn something new almost every time with you, Art...thanks!

*UPDATE (February 2022):* I retired the Pro-Release about two months after this video. Three months later...lockdown. 18 months later...back at bowling. I brought the Pro-Release out of retirement for about six weeks until I got my wrist strength back. I purchased a wrist strengther from Sportneer via Amazon...best $15 I could spend. Still pressing with the index finger and the scores are coming back to pre-pandemic levels.

I used one when I jumped from 13 to 15lbs, but I realized that, like you said, it makes it impossible to unload your wrist, making you prone to coming around the ball more and having higher tilt. What I wound up doing, while building the wrist/forearm strength to handle 15, was using the brace in a different way. It's a robbies revs 2. I removed the palm strap (it just unvelcros). Using only the wrist strap, I set the brace in the lowest or 2nd to lowest position (uncupped). This allowed me to cup and unload my wrist, but the brace was there to bounce my hand off of so that my wrist didn't fully break. Kind of a fail safe, but it still allowed me to build strength, as I was doing the work myself. It worked really well, and it only took a couple of months max for me to be able to handle 15lbs without it. The index finger thing definitely works. Great advice!

@@ronniedickerson2224 Luis Napoles use a wrist support that was just a band that put a little compression around your wrist and has a wider stiff flat spot on top your wrist. It does not interfere but if you go to flex your wrist and bend it backwards you can feel that flat piece on the back of your wrist and it reminds you not to keep it locked. I am going to try one. Just the compression around the wrist will help keep the tendons tight and give some non restrictive support. But that was a very well explained Idea.

Great video. Speaking of keeping pressure on your index finger I recently ordered a Turbo Rev device that makes me think of my index finger prior to getting up on the lanes. I spread my finger a bit away from the middle finger and immediately put pressure on the index one. Not only has my rev rate gone up a bit, but my hand is more quiet on the backswing and my accuracy has increased a fair amount. All leading to much better scores more strikes and more spare conversions... :)
@cooleyscoral34564 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion on the wrist support but the comment of top bowlers not using them is pretty misleading. The greatest male bowler of all time Earl Anthony and arguably the greatest female bowler of all time Liz Johnson both use wrist braces. I currently use a wrist brace because I have carpal tunnel but I will give the index finger tip a try and see if it will help keep me from putting to much pressure on my wrist.
@TheDornado2 жыл бұрын
I use one in warmups sometimes when I feel like my wrist is not staying in a strong/cupped position during back-swing. It helps me get the feel of keeping my wrist loaded through the swing before release. Once I have that feeling, I take it off and concentrate on letting my wrist release at the bottom of the swing. So I use it as a "feel" tool, not for support and always take it off once I am warmed up and feeling good.
@kapitan64 жыл бұрын
I've worn wrist supports on and off and the one thing I've noticed is that it helps stabilize my release (consistency). There's already a lot that could go wrong in our delivery (the steps we take during the approach, the swing, the grip on the ball, cupping and unloading), and I figured having a stable wrist (using a wrist support) helps minimize what could go wrong. I also realized that long term use of these supports actually weakens your wrist. It's like a pain medication - it helps you in the beginning but over time you become dependent on it.
@jvmiller19952 жыл бұрын
I think they can be a great thing to practice with some to help get in a habit of keeping a locked wrist during delivery of your release. That said I would not use one on my normal game. Because if you use it all the time you will become dependent on them. I think the wrist positioner kind that you can change the cupping on would be better than a fixed one so you can use it in different positions for strike or spare if you want it more flat for a 10 pin or something. I have not ever used one like that and thinking about one just for training but I would never make it a permanent part of my game myself.

Arthur, thank you so much for the video. I just recently became a USBC coach as well. And currently bowl in four leagues a week.I’ve been struggling with wrist pain and the finger pressure was the trick to fix my wrist pain. I’ve never wore a wrist brace. BTW!!!

I sprained my wrist bowling 20 years ago and it's never been the same. Even after not bowling for years, I'd come back and try bowling without it and my wrist would hurt again. The tendons going up my forearms get sore too. But now I realize that I've been muscling the ball and am working on a higher backswing to generate ball speed that i could never attain by muscling it, which has the added bonus of reducing the strain on my wrist. I bowled 6 games recently without my wrist brace, using a cranker style release and swinging with my hand open at the top like Amleto Monacelli, and my wrist still got pretty sore, but it's getting better very quickly. This leads me to believe I probably just need to strengthen my wrist, so I've gotten a 15 lb dumbbell to work out my wrist with. I know my brace hampers my release so I definitely wanna get rid of it. And I'm definitely gonna try using the index finger, which I've noticed pretty much every pro has in that same position shown in this video.

I just started using the Storm C4 Curve. It helped me identify what I was doing wrong. Then it helped me become far more consistent release and higher rev rates. I don't cup it much at all. So, my wife and I just started bowling about 4 months ago. We initially began using a wrist brace, which helped initially just to slightly strengthen up our stability. We only did this for about 3 or 4 week and then have since dropped the braces. You are spot on about rev rate and things. I started to train on how to do a proper release (the flicking a yo-yo type thing). It is impossible to do that properly with a wrist brace. When I first started bowling way back in the early 80's (for a short time), the release technique was a little different, more of a pull up with the fingers type of action. Now days it is a better "flick the yo-yo" type of action. It takes a little bit to retrain my brain to make the "flick the yo-yo" happen automatic, but you sure can't do it with a wrist brace. I also found that I cannot cup the ball with my palm under it the way I want to. I also found that there is a lot less stress on my wrist without the brace if I simply stay cupped under the ball through my down swing until release. And as you say Coach, let the revs begin! .. Revs come pretty easily once you begin to perfect this technique, and you don't need any sort of brace to do it. My brace sits in my closet now .. anybody want to buy a nice wrist brace?

I use a Lind's Big Gorilla glove. It's the best of its type I have found and it does help me when I'm bowling a lot, as when I practice or take my lesson. I can get through warm up and a game in league without serious problems, but after awhile the extra support helps. I didn't take up the sport until I was over sixty and I'm seventy now, so really I need all the help I can get. I've never used the big robo-bowler types though.

Totally agree with you, if you do not have a serious wrist injury, lose the wrist support. Some people don't want to put time and effort into practice, so they use a wrist support to get to a cupped position througout the entire swing, makes them believe they have a lot of rev rate. Whenever i get a student to me, i encourage them to not use a wrist support if they don't have an injury, i test that with a ball that is 4-5 pounds lighter, if they can cup that ball, all it takes is practice to learn how to cup and uncup their own ball as well. The index finger trick is a good one i can use in my lessons as well

Before I started using a Storm C4 Curve brace, I put my left foot at the center dot and eyes to the first arrow with my Physix. With the C4, I had to move all the way right and due the 3rd arrow. Now, I can only use the Physix with the angle lock flipped over. I kind up at the right with my Astro Physix. With my Fast Pitch I line up where I used to, bare wrist, with the Physix. Maybe I should try again without it. But I also have arthritis. So I may still need the brace.

I started using a Mongoose “Lifter.” It’s great for teaching how to get the right feel in the finger tips, and it does give me more hook. For a few months I wore a wrist support, to "correct" a mistake at the top of my backswing when my hand would "sag" downward. After a session with an instructor, I figured out that I was hesitating a bit at the top of the backswing, so the ball started to drop before my arm did ("bad bowler... BAD!") I could have corrected that problem by simply perfecting the pendulum swing so that my wrist remained straight of its own accord, my whole arm and the ball just obeying the laws of gravity and momentum. No more brace.

I like a wrist "positioner" I've bowled many huge games without....how ever I like it to help position my wrist's linear position at about 8 to 10 degrees placing the thumb side of the bowling hand behind and underneath the ball. Every time I wear the positioner in the non cupped almost straight line spot, and have my wrist in the same 8 degree linear spot it does improve consistency of the release for me. And we all know more consisten release is conducive to more pins ....and strikes.

I realize that this is an older video, Butt....I have an opinion. I am not a young fella at all, aged 74, I do not use a brace. I'm very lucky to be fairly strong and limber at my age. What I have witnessed with many bowlers, they have a tendency to pull the ball through the swing. While pulling the ball the wrist collapses. Also the swing itself tends to be very short, necessitating a muscled swing. Freeing up the swing helps the wrist and fingers come through at the bottom of the swing. Well Art can I work with you??????

Tom, This is Bill, a bowler of 52 years. I would suggest that Brunswick wrist support with index finger extended. I bowl right and left handed. The right handed one by Brunswick is a great addition to a bowlers bag of tricks or even to use all the time. Some days I get to lanes, the hand using a fingertip grip is noticeably weak. Without the support, a slight spike in pain occurs as I release the ball. Placing the support on, my wrist doesn't need to control the ball. The support is doing the straightness of the wrist while I can place emphasis on a relaxed swing and release. It might be also be good to buy those inner cotton liners to keep from sweating so much while wearing the wrist support. It is interesting to note that bowlers having no pain in hand or wrist are the bowlers that deflect the wrist support usage. While bowlers that bowl with the hand and wrist pain are forever touting their use. I nearly quit because of the PAIN while bowling without a wrist support. Using a support I bowl pain-free now. You would be amazed how much a a better roll is on the ball now.

I have read many of the responses on this video and many think that you need to get a stronger wrist. I recently had a lesson with a hall of fame bowler who stated that it has nothing to do with strength. Its technique. Just like if you took a big strong offensive or defensive lineman from the NFL and told him to drive a golf ball off the tee. Do you think that he could drive it further than the guy who is on the PGA tour even though he may be 10 times stronger than him?....Its about technique not strength.

Yeah, i can't agree, i use support, and i have no problem with rev rate. I consistently try without, and usually, within one swing, my game is over because the level of pain is quite intense. Besides, rev rate is not the key to bowling . that's a league players mentality. " The more it spins, the more strikes i can get." Amateur players chase the strike and flare, skilled players chase the spare and the consistency. While hooking from far left looks great and cool its not the end all to skilled play. So while the glove might stop you from an over the top rev spin, it WILL give you the maximum you should be throwing to be consistent and more predictable down the lane while offering comfort.

I don’t want to use one but the Robby rev 2 prevents my wrist from breaking so my thumb gets out of the ball quicker. I don’t plan on using it for long just to get the feel of it, but without it my wrist breaks and my fingers and thumb exit at the same time.

Also there's no mail bowlers in the top 50 that wear with sports but there's lots of great female bowlers to wear with supports

Don't ever attempt a modern release wearing a heavy-duty wrist brace or else you will put excess strain on your fingers and in turn hyper-extend your tendons causing pain. I learned the hard way.

Wrist devices serve a purpose for the bowler. They are bags of tricks just like changing to another type of ball surface. Devices are a tool to assist the bowler just like 4000 ball surface paper. Art, discouraging a bowler to use it shows your closemindedness to help a bowler. What do you say to 2 handed bowlers or bowlers using 1 hand suggesting to try 2 handed? I suggest you learn a few wrist supports meaning to use them to know them as a tool. Open up your vision please.

I used to wear one when I was younger to get used to form and know where hand placement. Once my body got used to it, I would take it off and never went back.

@@joepic85 A wrist support doesn't have anything to do with rev rate so what's your point?

@@kraftsamuel Yes, it absolutely does. Try to uncoil your wrist at the bottom with a wrist brace on

He’s actually 100% correct. After using one the past few years, I’m back to using nothing. The support did nothing but ruin my release after game 1. Also the PBA has banned them now.
