For our episode on music criticism, we spoke to Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop about the purpose of music criticism in today's digital world. We also broke down how to get a 10/10 from The Needle Drop by breaking down 7 qualities he gives praise to in each of his 10/10 reviews. Lastly, LA, Nahre, and Fantano flip the script and create their own song for you to review in the comments.

I'm gonna call it a light to decent 7. The track itself embodies pretty much all of the qualities set out in the video, but something about the mixing made the keys go from crisp to painful at times. That said, the actual tone of the notes was fantastic. I would've loved to hear Anthony's bass get a bit more boost in the mix as well.

TBH, nothing novel or innovative, but rather bland and derivative. It was a song without qualities, that sounded like it could have been composed by a computer. No emotion, nothing meaningful conveyed--just a soulless combination of sounds that was equal or less than the sum of its parts. It was worse than being merely bland--it was mildly agitating, directionless, and even though it was short I couldn't wait for it to end. And the keys were too loud. P.S., Not my intention to sound overly harsh, just an honest assessment--good people sometimes make substandard art.

@@SoundFieldPBS I would say anything 8 and above is considered a 'Great album' and I think earning the accolade of greatness is enough to deserve a meticulous listen. I think the new Hobo Johnson album is a good example of this. Anthony gave it an 8 and while it is in no means one of best albums this year it shows an artist presenting himself from a challenging standpoint and it feels quite fresh musically.

The Needledrop channel is great, not only for introducing a new perspective on the music you enjoy, but also for introducing you to new music. Fantano doesn't stick to a couple of genres, or only reviews what's popular, he reviews a wide range of music from artists around the world with various styles of music. My favourite new find this year was SUPER CHAMPON by Otoboke Beaver, a punk band from Kyoto, Japan. I loved it and I have fantano's review to thank for introducing me to the band, I'd never thought I could enjoy punk music, let alone punk music in a different language.

What I love about this video is that it kind of lays bare Fantano’s music-virtuoso persona, and gives the viewer the space to make up their own mind about this method of music criticism. One takeaway question I had was how would a person close to the music they are reviewing see it? So often we privilege this mythical objectivity in our discussions to the point where we almost expect and demand mean or hypercritical analysis. Maybe there should be more room for compassion and understanding in music review. Maybe the artists who are close to the art have valuable insights an “objective” reviewer just can’t have.

While I don’t think musicians should be aiming to get 10/10 or any sort of approval from melonhead. I do like that this video provides a basic template for upcoming musicians on how to make quality music. I think if anything as an artist you should be striving for excellence none the less, loved this video PBS :)

epic-ness: 2/10 - preposterously short, small buildup to single bit of generic jam dynamics: 2/10 - flatness... where's the loud OR the soft? precision: 4/10 - basically a sloppy jam progress: 7/10 - Fantano now trying to put out a legit piece of music cohesive: 8/10 - stuck to groove troubled: 0/10 - bland, mellow, largely lacking discordance/no lyrical content attention demanding: 2/10 - nondescript bluesy jam (was indeed background music) genuineness: 2/10 - the groove had nothing to do with the styles of the 3 performers I'm giving this one a light 3 :(

I love me some of that Fantano! But i always look at the reviews he’s doing as emotionally connected to who he is and what he cares about, packaged with a way above average music knowledge and communication skills. It’s easy to get either convinced he’s right, or the entire opposite. I usually learn more about the albums when just paying attention to his detailed descriptions here and there, than his scores. But they are very entertaining!

@FriedIcecreamIsAReality- like the Headhunters, but terrible instead of fantastic. I actually am starting to kind of love the way these guys analyse music to death and then produce something soulless and dreadful at the end. I don't want to be mean, I probably shouldn't say anything, but I think I'm gonna have to put on the actual Headhunters now to take the taste away.
