EQ is THE tool to get the tone of your song right. If your mix is muddy, thin, or harsh sounding... EQ can fix it.
If you're interested in learning more about EQ, I go IN-DEPTH into using it in both of my courses:
EQ Expert: www.thebandguide.com/eqexpert
The ULTIMATE GarageBand Mixing Course: www.thebandguide.com/theultim...
This is a video in The Ultimate GarageBand Beginner's Guide series where I'm bringing you 30 bite sized videos showing you EVERYTHING you need to get started in GarageBand from the first time you open it until you are exporting out your final, mastered song.

The dry mix/ static mix is well balanced out of the gate. The kick is right where you want it in the sub 100hz region. The snare clearly has it's own oomph space around 200hz and there's clear separation between the low end thump of the kick and the thump of the snare. There's already a dip in the mud area. So basically it's very well recorded and looks like it adheres to the characteristics of a well balanced song BEFORE any actual mixing begins. Makes things easier. Many home studio recordings on the other hand are a nightmare combo of weak kick, insane mud, harsh highs etc.

The drums are a Midi track, fyi. That helps a lot since the samples GB uses are really good quality.

Fantastic series! One thing i've noticed throughout all these videos is that the lead vocal is pumping a lot. It's especially apparent on the pre-chorus, where it sounds like "blank-my worth- nice apartment-mumble mumble..." To me, the main electric guitar power chords are washing out that lead vocal a lot. I'm curious by the time i get to the end of the video if that improves!

I've just watched everything that came up from searching "eq on GarageBand". This was the best tutorial, well-paced, detailed enough to find a place to start, simple enough for me to understand and with good clear comparisons between EQ on and off - helps me know what I'm listening for. Great work. I would definitely subscribe except I already did.

Hi Colin, Great tutorial thank you for sharing! Question, after I applied E.Q, my volume is going over the peak -3 . should I adjust volume, gain or E.Q to solve this problem? best J

My primary purpose is to record instrumentals for personal use (not for sale). I will only be using GarageBand’s digital instruments through my midi keyboard. Would I still have to do a lot of EQ/ post production of my work?

how does the copyright system works? im asking about its boundaries because I made a song that is inspired by another song. i copied the structure but i didn't mean to copy the key. I have my own tone tho it sounds similar and i have composed everything aside from the structure. does this mean that i copied the song? and am i able to take credit from it as long as i say that the song was an inspiration from another song?

Colin, I have a question but first context: in this tutorial, when you spot ''a little woofiness in the kick drum', you begin your search to identify it in the upper frequencies (2-3k, pale blue circle) but then move that little circle leftwards to fine-tune in the lower frequencies. You then solve the problem IN the lower frequencies but still using the pale blue circle/shading from the upper ones. My question is: if the problem and solution are in the lower frequencies, why 'find' it using the little pale blue circle from the upper frequencies, i.e. why not find/solve the problem in the lower frequencies only?
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide Жыл бұрын
That’s a GREAT question! I was only searching in the low frequencies, but I’d already used both EQ bells from that area, so I had to pull the point from the upper frequencies down to that area.

@@TheBandGuide Good morning Colin. In case all the points have been used up, then to get our job done, can we add another EQ to the plugin chain and get fish points to tackle the problem?
