I answer the question of how do you get a fennec fox for a pet.
Also some Ikigai footage.
And sorry for the hair on the mic I'll try the fuzzy wind thing next time.

I appreciate these kinds of videos because "cute" videos of exotics encourages people to run out & get them on impulse - sometimes via black market & that leads to disaster. I wish explanations like this should be required as it would save the animals so much trauma & abandonment.
@meganlangreck2488
@meganlangreck2488 4 жыл бұрын
Those kinds of impulsive people do not need much encouragement. They also don't think ahead to how much harm they can cause if they get what they think they want.
@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 4 жыл бұрын
On the plus side fennecs are still pretty hard to get so you don't see as much of that as you do with more common exotics. But yes sometimes even when you tell people the down sides people don't listen and think theirs will somehow be a special one and not have the common bad traits.

They are great pets for an owner who can accept them for who they are and work around that. It's people who want them to be perfectly potty trained or train them into being just like a little dog that get disappointed with them once they get them and they grow up.

From what I've read, it's rare for a Fennec to eat her offspring in the wild. Does that happen more in captivity because they are stressed? That seems to be part of the problem. If that's happening, they shouldn't be bred unless they are in zoological programs.
@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 6 жыл бұрын
Fennecs are prey animals so will eat their young if they feel threatened to take back the resources they put into raising them instead of letting a predator have them. Fennecs are easily stressed by sounds so the parents need a nice quiet place and several den boxes so they can move them if they feel threatened. They also seem less likely to eat their young if they are NOT bottle fed though make better pets if they are so people should not try to breed their pets and breeders could help reduce problems by having parents who were not bottle fed. Most zoos are quiet noisy so I doubt their odds would be any better.

I was at a mansion in New York state at a party.They have fennec foxes.Yet their enclosure is custom made zoo enclosure.That looks like they are in the Sahara desert.It looks like you are looking at a zoo exhibit and the animals seem content.They are friendly and I petted them .Yet do live like pets.BE HONEST.THIS IS A BETTER LIFE FOR THEM.I. knOW NOT EVERYONE IS A MULTI MILLIONARE and can recreate a breathtaking enclosure for them .Like at a five star zoo.YET STILL........You know IAM RIGHT.

Better is very subjective here. Just because one animal is happy in a situation does not mean others will suffer if not kept in the same situation. Many fennecs will become more standoffish when kept like that because less time is spent with them and they are very sensitive animals. Ikigai has the whole shared room to play in if he wants, which is a large converted garage so like 25'x15' but he doesn't. Fennec's are little and so are prey animals in the wild. He is scared of going into those open spaces so sticks to his corner of the room. So would it be better to toss him into a big naturalistic room where he will be scared all the time due to all the open space and being alone? Only if you think natural is better at all costs. Being scared all the time is certainly natural as they would spend their life terrified of predators getting them in the wild. Animals do not think in abstract concepts like people do. He does not miss the wild, that neither he nor his recent ancestors ever knew. He does not need a desert like room with rocks and plants. He needs places to dig and hide. He doesn't need live prey. He needs to chase and use his natural instincts. He gets all of that. He has a sand box to dig in, though will dig at his rugs and my pillows too. He can hide in his sandbox, under the bed, or on his window shelf behind the curtain. Right now he's resting on the pillows behind me. He gets to chase and attack the cat teaser every night when we play and dig for worms in his sand box or paw them out of a pet puzzle for stimulation. And he gets his social interaction from me and the dog(in reality most fennecs don't care for other fennec company that much but they love dogs and people when raised with them). He is very happy and if he were suddenly put in nature or a natural environment he would be very unhappy. But if natural is more important than happiness, then sure it would be better, but to me it's not and if you could ask him he would agree.

It's generally if they get stressed. Scary sounds are the most likely trigger. They will eat their young in the wild too if they think a predator might get them.

I can’t find out if you can own one in NC. Some places say no, some says you need a permit, and some say native foxes are illegal, so Fennec fox is ok..
@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Laws are a bit murky but one clear one is that import needs a permit and I heard they only give those for USDA. That would means even if fennecs are legal to posses you would need to find one in state but there are none to my knowledge which means you can't get one legally since import is illegal.

And all info on the website is up to date? I have been looking for info if I can get a fennec in Arkansas but can't seem to get a straight answer.
@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. This is the section from the state code. www.arkansasdoghuntersassociation.com/uploads/2/3/0/4/23040970/agfc_code_of_regulations_2017.pdf#%5B%7B%22num%22%3A142%2C%22gen%22%3A0%7D%2C%7B%22name%22%3A%22XYZ%22%7D%2C47%2C329%2C0%5D You'll probably have to copy and paste that. You have to get an import permit though. Red and gray fox have different laws since native, that may be part of the confusion. Though to get an import permit for red fox they have to come from certain breeders in certain states. It's possible they will make importing fennec equally difficult.

@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 3 жыл бұрын
Texas is a mess. The law has been the same for decades BUT they keep changing how they choose to enforce it. The law says foxes are banned. They used to only apply this to native foxes since it's under the fur barer's law. Then they interpreted it to mean ALL foxes and they seized and killed pet fennecs and they were banned for a long time. They in recent years decided it means only native foxes again so now fennecs are being sold there again. The problem is that could all go bad again once someone new is in charge, unless the law it's self gets rewritten to be more clear.

I don't know what the laws are in Greece but probably not. They are hard to get or illegal in most places.

Short answer is no. Some Providences allow them but no one is breeding them in Canada and they can not be imported into the country.

No. Technically they have permits for them IF you have worked for 2+ years in a licensed facility and can get in depth documentation from that facility on your knowlage of their care but they really hate to give out permits even if you have all that.

It's a natural instinct in prey animals if they feel stressed. In the wild that means they take back the resources put into the babies instead of letting the predator have them.

DISAPPEARANCE OF THE FENEC BECAUSE EXOTIC ANIMALS ARE TRAFFICKED Its taming is not advised, and remains subject to a special authorization issued by the veterinary services (DDSV) of the department. However, one has the right to tame a fennec in the United States, Canada and Japan among others. Once tamed, however, this little fox will never be "domestic" as such. Even if it can be as friendly as a dog or a cat, the fennec is very active and needs to move a lot (especially at night). On the one hand it's incompatible with other pets, and on the other hand it involves a lot of outlet activities. Another difficulty his domestication can present is his instinctive behaviour: he tends to build hiding places for food or to transform furniture into burrows. In addition, it is rare to be able to take him to the litter box. And to complete the picture, it is important to ensure that it does not escape because of its speed and agility, and some veterinarians may refuse to treat it as it is considered an exotic animal.

I'm not sure why I wasn't notified of your comment. It is not legal to import wild fennecs into the USA or any country that has signed the CITES treaty. So poached from the wild fennecs are not an issue unless someone is breaking the law, not very common. If you are buying from a USDA licensed breeder that is not an issue, but avoid dealers and pet stores as you can not be sure of the source. Mine has a large enclosure but also is allowed free roam in my room since he is less trouble than most so it's fairly safe to do so. I see to his wild instincts by using a cat teaser, burying worms in his sand and hiding treats in a puzzle feeder. Definitely only advised if one can put the extra effort and time into it.

Wanna know what makes the laws even stupider? Non-native foxes are allowed, everyone from the state WRC says so, but since the law simply states "fox", the blanket term prevents owners from safely obtaining them.... All they need to do is edit the law a bit to clarify what they mean by "fox", but they're too lazy.
@TamanduaGirl
@TamanduaGirl 7 жыл бұрын
It's the same issue as TX except they are the example of why this is a problem, even though it may be tempting to get one if officials say it's okay. TX law has always said no foxes, but at first they allowed exotic foxes, then one day those in charge said since it says foxes that means all species and fennecs were confiscated, now those in charge are saying it just means native again, but the law and wording NEVER changed in all of this so when new people are in charge again fennecs could get confiscated again when they decide foxes means all foxes again. I know a different state but it clearly shows why it has to be clarified and just their saying it doesn't apply to exotics doesn't make it safe.

@@Crystal-ov8uz They typically live to be 10 to 15 years old, so buying a fennec fox is a commitment, like most pets. It is legal to own a fennec fox everywhere in the United States except Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, and Washington. I copied and pasted that so as you can see you can have a fennec fox if that's what you want just no red fox or whatever only fennec and here in Alabama there was some person breeding them but I don't think that person is doing that anymore

Yes, but each sate, county and city might have their own laws banning them, so state wise that less than half, unfortunately. They get lumped in with wolves and such often and are banned for being related to the bigger things.
