For more information on this process, the SSAAWA website has some fantastic resources available here at www.ssaawa.org.au/faq/how-do-i-apply-for-a-firearms-licence To join the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, in Western Australia, their website can be found here. Membership is highly recommended for everyone with an interest in shooting in WA. www.ssaawa.org.au/ I would also highly recommend looking at and potentially joining the Shooters, Fishers, and Farmers Party of WA. They have recently reformed and membership costs less than a steak dinner. I just got mine a few weeks ago. I was blessed that i had no issues and only had to wait about 2 months. It's the daunting task of the paper work that trips people up i reckon, they give up before they even begin

It's designed to really put people off - it did for me for years when I was working at the dealer. I doubt that it is going to get any simpler with the new changes our current government want to introduce, but one can hope that their successors will listen to reason following the next election

Wow I didn’t realise how different it was in WA to get a firearms license I only waited 28 days for my car A,B license in nsw and had it 4 days after that in the mail! it was also the same thing with my pistol license which was fantastic so I never complained and now that our PTA are online my lastest 308 PTA was approved in 4 hours!

Ooh, don't you worry - one of the proposals made to the Firearms Act Reform last month was that we be subject to a 42 day cooling off period instead of 28 days. Yeah, WA is a great place to get a firearms license.

I fell into the trap of the no PTA when i moved back from QLD -.- had to buy a new gun to get my original guns fml

You guys are having a fair battle over in WA - It works the opposite here in Victoria where you can not buy a gun or apply for a permit to aquire without a license. The process here makes more sense than your model over there but the paperwork and wait times are similar. I have a mate who started the process back in June and still has not yet been issued with his permit to aquire. Thanks for the info

I'm not sure if you've heard about the new legislation our state parliament is currently trying to get passed, but there's nothing really fair about the battle we've got on our hands at the moment. I'm trying to do a video on that, and how we all need to respond to it, but it's hard to know exactly where to start. I hope your mate's permit comes through soon, but it sounds like he should probably be following up with licensing over there. Waiting for anything like that is really tough. Thanks for the comment!

I found it too easy to get my licence. It was harder to get a real property letter though! I was genuinely shocked that getting a firearm here does not involve a conversation with local police. I think the local police should meet all applicants. All the stupid law changes are hardly needed if they involved local police more often. Shortest application has been 28 day cooling off + 2 weeks and longest application has been 3 months +.

Building actual genuine relationships with the police is something I brought up with my local MP earlier this year, as the whole process as it currently is really puts us against each other rather than working together. To do that, there needs to be police who actually shoot recreationally and understand what it is we do and why we do it, and I don't think there are too many of those left in WA - experienced officers are leaving in droves because of how terribly they are being treated by our current leaders. Simply talking to "an officer" probably wouldn't do much, because the majority would be working from a script and be completely unprepared for a genuine conversation, much like almost every MP in our state, but if there were officers who were actively involved in and invested into the community progress could be actually made on this front. I wouldn't say that the current process is "too easy", but it is definitely much more straight forward than we are conditioned to believe it is. I think that most of it is quite logical, really, but the arbitrary property sizes are completely inappropriate for their defined purposes.

@@blackstumpballistics5361 You hit the nail on the head there with your reply. I have access to a small property and the owner is cool with me bringing friends who have their own licensed firearms. I only have to send a message or make a call before going. I believe that this will be something that the government is going to ban - which will mean that I will more likely be at the farm all by myself. Which is an obvious safety concern. With the talking to a local cop bit, it would be more about a cop going to each applicants house and having a look at the proposed storage location.

Thanks mate :) This is more for anyone else who might read this comment as we discussed this in private over on Facebook, but the short answer is that I don't really know, but will likely be looking into this myself in the new year. My "slightly longer" answer is that I think (but don't know much for certain) that there are several you may need, and I think most require various TAFE/tertiary education qualifications. Some information regarding this can be found on the DBCA website at www.dbca.wa.gov.au/licences-and-permits/fauna , but this page is a complete mess and puts things like kangaroo harvesting amongst other issues like pet keeping and wildlife rehab. The reasons this page is so hard to navigate are probably political, but I'll spare you my cynicism on that matter for now. For now though, if anyone has more insight on this particular matter, I'd love to hear about your experiences!
