Excellent video fellow Western Canadian! I’m chatting with some lawyers in Bulgaria right now and they said I need to have owned an LLC for 2 years. Unfortunately we’ve been nomadic and our business isn’t registered. It’s more of a freelance situation. You mentioned a way to get around the LLC situation. What is that? Is it buying an older LLC? That’s what the lawyer recommended to me. I’m a bit stuck again!

This video is super helpful. One other question I have is how you got your police background check done for this application without going back to Canada? I know this document has to be apostilled, but we don't have apostille in Canada. Did you get the background check done through a 3rd party and if so, how did you get it legalized without going back to Canada? Also, according to Bulgaria's website, you need to give up your Canadian citizenship in order to get Bulgarian citizenship. Do you know if there's a way around this?

Thanks - I'm a little confused about the timeline... to apply for a D Visa, in my own country, I need to already have a 12-month accommodation lease, then extend that lease when applying for the residency permit within Bulgaria? So, I'm really tied in for 14 or 15 months on the lease depending upon Bulgarian bureaucracy?
@OffshoreCitizen3 жыл бұрын
Yes, correct. It's annoying, but you need to have the lease when applying for visa, and then when you apply for the residency permit in the country. Also, every time you renew your residency permit (once a year).
@AllenMacCannell2 жыл бұрын
@@OffshoreCitizen You've just described an unacceptable bureaucratic nightmare! I'm no longer interested in residency. Freelancers can divide their time more easily between countries. So is it possible to live in Schengen Greece three months and then Bulgaria three months and back again? It would fulfill the Schengen rule of only 90 days per 180. But does that fit Bulgaria's similar rule? Your discussion added even more nightmare rules than other video makers. This idea of a year long lease to get a freelance visa? And to rent the place while not being able to live in it? Few people have that kind of money and time to burn. If not Greece/Bulgaria switching every three months, what about Bulgaria/Romania switching?

Just hearing about it made me give up LOL. That's why I love Georgia so much! Here's the process: arrive. Done! 1 year (for like 90 countries) residency. You can study, work, buy property (except agricultural). Armenia is the same thing, but 6 months instead of one year. Albania is also one year if you have an American passport.

Applied in Hungary, not in Romania. At the time I was spending all of my time in that part of the world, and I explained that. It was way more convenient for me to apply in Budapest, than to fly all the way back to Canada and apply from there. They understood my reasoning. It's best if you can apply from your home country, or at least the country where you have residence, but there are always exceptions to this rule.

Well of course Malta is the best citizenship available. I think if you can get it Hungary is the best option but not so accessible. There's an interesting option using Latvia but requires some doing. I think Turkey is super appealing just as an option because it is so easy even though the passport isn't very good. Depends though: - do you have family? - what countries are you trying to access? - what's your current citizenship? - how urgent is it? Right now there are some deals on some of the programs in the Caribbean right now on particular for families.

Some of your critique of the process you had to take sounds a bit...complainy on your part. Of COURSE you have to apply at your home. You're a FOREIGNER. It makes ZERO sense that you think you'd be able to apply at a Bulgarian Embassy INSIDE Bulgaria. That makes absolutely no sense at all. You're not Bulgarian. Why do you think you'd apply in Bulgaria at a Bulgarian Embassy? That's complete absurdism. Logic dictates that you, a CANADIAN, would of course be applying at a CANADIAN located BULGARIAN embassy. Literal logic. What you want is to defy logic, and as a Canadian to be able to walk into an Embassy of Bulgaria...in Bulgaria (that's your first mistake since there are none in Bulgaria. Embassies are located OUTSIDE of the home nation). Next you think that because you're in Bulgaria, you'd have any right to apply to anything while there, AS. A. FOREIGNER. Again---why? Because you don't want to fly home. Ok, but really why? Because of your convenience. No real reason.
@OffshoreCitizen3 жыл бұрын
You apply at a Bulgarian embassy outside of Bulgaria... Who then send the documents to the immigration office on Sofia. So why not just allow people to go straight to the office in Sofia? Makes no sense. It would actually be more efficient for both Bulgaria and the person applying for residency. This way you need to send the documents from the foreign embassy to Sofia then Sofia back to the foreign embassy it's pure waste, makes zero sense.
@tw94193 жыл бұрын
I applied for multiple residencies from inside the country. Didn’t have a need for embassies abroad. It’s so much easier and more convenient, no need to go back and forth. Mostly done online. That’s how things SHOULD be done in 21st century, not going back and fourth. But Bulgarian bureaucracy is still stuck in the communist era, so they don’t have any concepts of convenience and use of technology.
