very accurate, succinct description of the music publishing industry in Nashville - surprised this doesn't have more views! this is the real deal

Thank you Rick. This is a very informative video. I feel like Rip Van Winkle. I was on a Nashville Indie label in the nineties as a writer and artist and had a number of songs published. I had to make a choice and chose to finish a 31 year Prison career. Since retiring, I'm finishing old songs and writing new ones. I've had some offers, but don't have a clue these days. I've subscribed and will try to catch up with this century. Thanks again.

Play Loud Before you even consider trying to get a publishing deal you need to learn absolutely everything about publishing first, if you're going to go into a publishers office it's best to know at least as much as they do

You either blow up and they'll find you or you get a someone to represent you like a music solictor/manager with contacts to sell your works to a publishing label...thats what I heard...I'm going with the former.

@ronniebishop24966 жыл бұрын
The most important ingredient in the music industry is the song, the next and some people think the most important is getting it cut or recorded. The song plugger or song writer manager. I've managed some of the best including Don Goodman and Becky Hobbs. But I didn't realize how much I loved it . I'm going to start plugging songs full time again. The best way for me is straight to the artist or producer.? Big Producers are better because they produce more than one artist. You can get a pitch sheet and start there but most people have never gotten a cut from one.

Clicked on the link for music industry blueprint annd got a server error problem. I know how frustrating this can be from my experience of web management. In fact I went through it this year with site migration from one host to another. My aim is to get in depth knowledge on how to get a publishing deal from a large archive of music projects I've worked on for 10 years, none of which are out there in the public domain yet! Or a record deal would be great, but I know how hard it is to get one. I wouldnt know where to start, which is why I've found a good resource here to learn what to do!

Signing into a Publishing deal is basically signing deep in to the rape esp with a Major Publisher. It's in your best interest to retain your copyrights and stay independent. Admin deals are taking over the industry while Songwriters flock from thier Co-Publishing deals to Admin deals such as Kobalt.

Wow. great vid and I'm sure there is SO much more to learn. I just have one question. Is this process the same for a music producer/composer? I am not a songwriter by any means, but I do make music and compose songs. Do I go about the same process to get placements for my music in TV, movies or with artists?

You are a Songwriter if write and compose music. Beat Makers are technically Songwriters. The definition of a Songwriter is a Composer that writes Music or Lyrics.

I got a stupid question. If i'm a songwriter/producer.. and I get a publishing deal so they can help me pitch songs to artists etc,. is it usual to get paid in advance once you get signed? and what do you mean by "pay back" if they don't make money on the songs you made? is that how it works.. :S So basically they loan you money until the songs has made equal amount of money back?

What is the best way for a lyrics only writer to get a song to a specific artist to compose the music and record it? The genre in my case is reggae. My ideal artist is Damian Marley. The lyrics are timely, relevant, original with social impact.

Well you can easily avoid all the sets of cons by not taking an advance, which I assume is what he's referring to? I can happily work my rubbish job until the royalties come in, no matter how long a song takes to get picked up by a producer/artist And if I've got an initial batch of 20 songs ready to go I don't require any full time to focus on writing, that way nobody owes anybody

so what do people like me do?. The songs are copyrighted & the demos are done, most folks like my stuff, but being 80 ain't a fuzzy warm feeling, while standing in line, in Nashville. All I hear on the radio, is garbage & most of it will never be heard, two more times & will never be a hit song. Country RAP is Country CRAP. There are two kinda songs, a dance song & a concert song, The idiot that plays his concert songs, at a dance, doesn't get a return visit & vice versa. I'm a Steel Player, but am through with that. My guitar & amp weighs too much, for an old man to drag around.
