I'M SO GLAD I WATCHED THIS VIDEO!!! You helped me understand why all my orchids were rotting and not doing well, it's because the people you buy the orchids from pack that stuff in there like it's going out of style and it turns in to a soppy gross mess and my orchids are all rotting. I had even switched to bark because I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. Now I have a clear and complete vision as to how to care for my plants that I've spent tons of money on and how to stop having them die on me thank you so much I can't thank you enough you are a complete and total GEM to the orchid world. If you wouldn't mind, can you please do more videos on Oncidium care, Dendrobium care, and Epidendrum care, I don't do well with those. My Phal game is on point all thanks to YOU!

Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful comment. I'm really glad that my videos are helpful. I try to help and share what I've learned along the way and will continue to try to make more informative videos on different orchids. I don't have any epidendrums but can make more on Dendrobiums and Oncidiums for sure, and have a couple I made last year as well ❤️

I’m an American living in Thailand and have been growing orchids for the past 16 years. I have had to stop buying anymore because I will be moving out of Bangkok and heading North to a very small village and building a house. I will probably live there until I die. I did subscribe to your channel in hopes of learning some tips on moving to a little cooler area. It’s in the Northeast part of the upper part of Thailand so it will get colder then here in Bangkok in the winter months so I will have to give them a little protection at night I would imagine. Looking forward to seeing what your channel offers in how to take care of orchids properly.

Just found your video and WOW Nicole, that's a very impressive Orchid root system, and your explanation was clear and understood!! I have three Phal Orchids that haven't done well at all in bark even though, I've had them in my indoor greenhouse under grow lights!! I've even tried water culture and they were doing fine but somehow, they've either stunted or their roots dry up faster somehow!! I'm SO praying having them in sphagnum moss will help them thrive, thank you so much for sharing!! Fingers crossed!!❤️🥰🤞🤞🤞

This is why I hate the repotme slot pots. I wish they had normal holes, those are much easier to get roots freed. In particular I haaaate the bottom of their pots. I gave up finding a pot I like and just make my own with a soldering iron now. It's a lot cheaper too. I feel like orchid pots get insane markup. Using clean take out containers has also worked well.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna Жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100% they are so difficult!! I have quite a few left and I dread using them! The very high price is another thing I agree with you on, a small plastic pot shouldn't be $5... It's a deli container with holes basically, as you said!

This is one of the best orchid afters I've ever seen and it's funny because just today that i ran across this video, I was considering if phals would do nicely in just sphagnum moss if it's arranged very fluffy! Have you tried this with more phals and have the same success? Thanks for this very informative video!
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes I grow all my phals like this, with that said, I use other materials in the pot if it's a pot larger than 5 inches because then it gets heavy, so I'll mix in bark or husk like I did with the repot into the 7" pot. Happy growing and thanks for stopping by ❤️

Man, this was helpful! I repotted a phal using 90% bark and 10% sphagnum. But living just outside Death Valley in NV, where it's super dry, I'm finding the bark dries out every other day. I was worried too much moss would rot the roots, but I realize from your video that doing a 50:50 mix is the way to go. As it is now, it's grown lots of air roots and has flowered, but its leaves and interior roots are showing clear signs of dehydration. I'm going to try your method today. Thanks so much for posting this helpful video! 🩷 🌸 PS: would more sphagnum than bark be better? I'd love to get your rights on this if you have time. Thanks! 😊

I'm so glad this was helpful to you! I actually pot some of my phals in smaller pots (5 inches or less) in very fluffy spagnum moss and it works really well for me, the key is to keep it really fluffy. This was in 100% moss before repotting. A 4" pot can be watered about 2x per week for me in moss, maybe 3x when it's really really hot. Check out my most recent repot video to see. I only just got my second orchid. I'm wondering why orchid pots are clear? Is it just for aesthetics so you can see the roots? I put my first one in a terracotta and it seems to be doing OK so far but I'd be open to changing to a clear pot of there is a reason other than aesthetics. Thanks for your video.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna Жыл бұрын
Welcome to the hobby! Orchid pots are clear to monitor the roots and see if the pot moisture in it or not (condensation). I personally feel like they aren't necessary, but they can be helpful for beginners. Terra cotta is great for beginners, because most beginners overwater their orchids at first, and tera cotta promotes quicker drying. With that said it's a fine line - because terra cotta will need to be watered more frequently. Stick with the terra cotta if it works for you, and happy growing. It's a lovely hobby

I've seen some videos where clay balls-pebbles are used. Any idea what the downside of using clay balls instead of Spagnum or bark is?
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 6 ай бұрын
Leca - the clay balls tend to be cooling so for a warm or hot grower, if the temps are cooler at night, the root ball will be a few degrees cooler. If you're using semi hydro the downside is that these orchids can never grow out, if you're giving wet dry cycles, it works ok, but it tends to dry out fast. I hope this helps!

Sphagnum will always pack itself down over time, due to the weight of water that goes into the pot and just simple gravity. The idea that it gives "plenty of air" isn't true in a solid pot either. It may take a year or two but those roots are going to rot. Sorry, but I'm speaking from decades of experience. Orchids are slow to respond but once they're on a downhill trajectory it's very hard to stop it.
@NicoleDeanna

I repot Orchids with sphagnum moss every 1-2 years so it's not a problem. Also the larger the pot, the more heavier it gets, yes I agree, that's why I add other materials like bark to keep it airy, especially once the pots are 6" and larger. Thank you!
